Been there, done that, I'm over it now.  Weed just turns me into a semi-comatose junk food zombie.  I'm all for legalizing it along these lines though.  It's always been interesting to me how alcohol is legal, and weed isn't.  How much do we spend on The War on Drugs every year? (Bill Hicks has a great bit about how "There's a war on drugs, that implies that there's a war, and the people on drugs are winning.)  For that matter, just open up YouTube and watch every one of Bill Hicks's bits on drugs, starting with this one.

I'll take this discussion to the extreme; what if all drugs were legalized today, how many folks are going to run right out and start using Heroin? Cocaine? Barbiturates? Special K? Speed?  Heck, the average home is full of substances that will get you buzzed just for the trouble of breathing them in an enclosed space.  I could care less what your vice is, so long as it doesn't affect your ability to function within society, and you're not out there pushing it on others.

That's genius Jeff.

Ok, I've got a few...

300 Trailer 1
Alien 3
The Adjustment Bureau, but I'm a sucker for the music.
Inception Trailer 3
Star Trek Trailer 3
Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace...you know you were excited the first time you saw it too.
The Star Wars Trilogy: Special Edition, probably the first trailer I remember being able to see on the internet.
I'll second Sucker Punch
Super 8
Terminator Salvation Trailer 3
Tron Legacy, any
Ultraviolet, I actually bought this based on the trailer.  Joke on me.
Watchmen

No one's thrown out any video game trailers yet; thankfully I've got a few of those too.

Halo 3: Believe
Halo 3 ODST: We are ODST (Welsh and Hungarian in case you were wondering.)
Star Wars The Force Unleashed 2: Teaser
Star Wars The Force Unleashed 2:Betrayal Cinematic Trailer HD
Star Wars The Old Republic: Jedi vs. Sith Cinematic Trailer HD
Star Wars The Old Republic: Hope of Alderaan Cinematic Trailer HD

Also of interest, though not strictly trailers, are the Timeline series that GameTrailers is doing for The Old Republic, narrated by Lance Henriksen.  Too bad the actual gameplay looks terrible, the trailers had me wanting to get into my first MMO.

Let's see.  These aren't strictly trailers either, but they do have that trailer feel.
Mortal Kombat: Rebirth
Halo: Landfall, directed by Neill Blomkamp
Halo 3 ODST: Desperate Measures Vidoc, staring Mal, Jayne, and Number 6.
Gran Turismo 2 intro, still the best intro of the series.

That should keep you busy for a while. wink

Pretty sure iPods let you play back certain types of audio at 1.5x, 1x, or .5x; I know my iPhone does for podcasts and audiobooks.  I've never used this function for either though.

I love audiobooks, especially since you can build them with chapters (m4b's).  They're great for anything episodic too, i.e., I took my Star Wars Radio Drama episodes, used the trick I posted earlier to cut off the intro and credits from all the middle episodes, and stitched them together to make one long program; ANH clocks in at around 4:53.  Also because it's chapterized I can jump to or skip individual episodes if I want.  Good stuff.

I've tried Audiobook Builder, and a couple others for Mac, but I still prefer a little free program for Windows called Chapter and Verse.  Audiobook Builder isn't free, and seems to want to convert to ACC even if the files are already ACC.  With C&V I can let iTunes do the conversion over-night or something, and C&V just has to splice the files together.

I'm not sure which would be more impressive, actually shooting in all those locations, or the VFX work required to make them look like they went to all those locations.

Yeah, it goes on a bit too long, and yeah, that's probably part of the gag.

I think this series suffers from the same fundamental flaw as the Alien series, in that they both follow the human story.  I shouldn't call it a flaw really, but you couldn't make Alien or Terminator from the Alien or Terminator's point of view; you need a human character to follow and relate to.  The trouble with both these franchises from a studio's point of view is, "How do we make a Terminator / Alien movie without John Connor / Ellen Ripley?"  So what you wind up with is The John Connor series or The Ellen Ripley series, which is fine, but it does limit you creatively.

Terminator also suffers from the whole time paradox problem.  McG is already talking about T5 and T6.  If we were to follow Kyle's story from the first movie, "...the war was over, we'd won..." then the last thing we should see in T6 should be Kyle getting sent back in time.  In fact the whole 5th movie should be about winning the war.  Then at the end they hear about this secret Skynet plan to build the time machine.  Then T6 is all about finding the time machine, and the question of fate.  Terminator has really always been about fate; is everything set, or is there no fate but what we make for ourselves?  Does John need to send Kyle back in time? Can he prevent it from becoming necessary?  If he does what does that mean for his existence?

There's some ripe ground for future (pardon the pun) stories in this universe; I hope they dig up a writer that can do more with it than just more "make stuff go boom" stories.

Oh, and the feed is now sending out the Enhanced version, just FYI.

Not sure if this is still relevant, but Dropbox is free, and allows you do host files and link to them individually.  The free account has like a 2GB limit, which isn't bad.  Not sure about PC, but on my Mac I have a Dropbox folder so I can just drag-and-drop stuff into the public folder, and there's a context menu for getting the link to it.

Brilliant.

Thanks to everyone for the feedback; I think there's quite a bit that can be done with this, so keep those ideas coming!

I'll throw out my own thanks to Teague for embracing the idea and trying his damnedest to integrate it.  I kind of just threw this one out there not knowing if it would really fly, so I'm glad to see it take off like this.

Also big thanks to Holden for all his unsung work behind the scenes; if not for him the site would not be what it is today.  Glad to see you posting here sir.

The reason nobody does that, I think, is that if you stop halfway in, listen to something else, and come back, your place is lost.

In iTunes, there's a check box in the previously mentioned Get Info menu where you can chose to have it remember your spot.

Exactly.  That one's under options, as well as another useful check box, Skip when shuffling.  You can even set in and out points for tracks with intros you regularly skip.  In fact here's another quick tip:

Got a track with say, a 30 second intro you fast forward through every time, and 5 seconds of dead air at the end.  First scrub to the point at the end where you want the track to stop, note the time. Get Info, Options, set Start time to 0:05, and Stop time to the time you noted.  You can adjust by fractions of a second if it's not quite right.  Now, go into your Preferences / Import settings.  Here you can set iTunes to convert CDs, or in our case files already in your library to ACC, AIFF, Apple Lossless, MP3, or WAV.  Select whatever you want, based on your needs.  Now go back to that file, and either go up to Advanced / Create [insert selected format here], or right click and there should be a context menu for it.  Now iTunes will create a new version of that file, using the format you selected, and it will conform to the time constraints you imposed.  I.e., in this case, the track will be 35 seconds shorter, start at 0 seconds, and end at the end of the scroll bar.

Now just either delete or uncheck the old version.  The advantage is in the fact that because you are creating a new file, if anything ever happens to your iTunes library in the future (it will), you don't have to go back and set that old file up the way you had it, you just import the new file.

Like I said, lots of good stuff under Get Info.

On an iPod sure, they do play automatically.  As for the rest of my podcasts, I only sync a couple others to my device, and then only the unheard ones.  A playlist would work, but for DIF I like to have every episode on my device, and I'm an iTunes organization fanatic (ask CloeZ about the four days I spent fixing her library); for me it just makes more sense to put them in with my music, but as we say so often, your mileage may vary.

Just had a quick look at the other podcasts I subscribe to and get via iTunes; sure enough, all of them show Podcast as their genre.  Not sure if this is something that can be altered for the RSS feed, but from here on out we can definitely make the genre of the direct download files something like Commentary.

What I personally do, and this works for any audio podcast, is save them under Music.  Remember, a podcast is really just a way of getting content from someone, you don't have to keep it organized like that if you don't want to.  Select an episode of your favorite podcast, right click and Get Info.  Now you can change the genre, but even cooler is you can go under Options and set Media Kind to Music.  Click Ok, and now that file will show up in your Music library and can be managed like any other album.

One of the things that bugs me about podcasts in iTunes is that you have to select each episode individually.  I tend to let episodes stack up and then listen to them in a marathon session, but I have to keep going in and selecting the next episode.  Moving them to Music allows iTunes to play them one after the other.

Anyway, I recommend everyone play with that Get Info context menu, there's a lot you can do in there to organize your library.

Thanks for the feedback.

I posted this in the Alien 3 show notes, but as we have a thread for this sort of thing now...

Here's the evolution of what wound up on the screen.  This is what happens when a studio wants to keep a series going, but doesn't quite know how.  Arguably the same can be said for Indy 4 and Terminator Salvation to name a couple more.

I think it is equally important to understand why the ones that didn't work failed, which is after all, one of the functions of DIF in the first place.

Yeah, I've seen other podcasts doing this too, that's why I was so keen to try it.  I've also heard that it's more work, but nothing specific as to why it's more work.  Sure I had a bit of trouble figuring out why the links didn't work at first, but I think I've got that one ironed out.  Thanks to Teague I've got a plan for handling the images now too.  Personally I prefer doing it this way than typing out links in bbcode; with Garageband it's pretty much copy paste.  So yeah, I hope they're here to stay too.

I hope everyone has had the opportunity to check out the Enhanced copy of The Empire Strikes Back.  If not, you can download it here.

The question was tabled as to whether we could go back and re-master old episodes in this fashion.  The answer is definitely yes, but I’m afraid I just can’t do it by myself.   I simply don’t have the time to take on what would be the equivalent of a full time job, but I have a suggestion.

Ever wonder what it’s like doing my job? How would you the audience like to participate in Enhancing Down in Front?

“Great! How?”

Well, basically you would select whatever episode(s) you would want, and find the links and perhaps artwork to go along with it.  Send them to me, I’ll assemble them and output the final file.  If you have Garageband (5.1, part of iLife ‘09) you can go ahead and assemble everything yourself, but I retain editorial and encoding control.  You’d send me the Garageband file, and whatever artwork that goes with it.   I’ll check you’re work and make whatever changes I deem necessary.  Feel free to contact me with questions; my email and chat id’s are in my profile.

We can work out the details if there’s enough interest, but for now you need:
1.) The ability to research online.
2.) At a minimum, output a list of links, with time codes to a text file.
3.) If images are to be included, either links to them, or include them as part of the archive file you will send me.  Name them whatever works for you, but include that name in the text file appropriately time coded.  Feel free to resize  / crop them to 300px x 300px.  This part is optional, but it would be a big help.
4.) The ability to archive everything into neat, tidy zip file.
5.) You have one week from the time you submit your choice to deliver the episode to me.  After that it becomes available to the forum again.

So a line in the text file would read something like:

[Time code] [Description of link] [html link] [name.jpg or link to image]

I could even whip up an Excel spreadsheet if that would make it easier.  Basically I just need at what time to drop in the link, and the picture if one is to be included.

I can accept text files, MS Word files (I’m on Office ’08, so docx files are fine),  and MS Excel spreadsheets.  If you have a question just contact me.

Have a look at old show notes to get an idea for the kinds of things I link to, and again, have a look at the Empire Enhanced episode to get a feel for how it works.  Keep in mind that in order to be effective the link should be able to remain visible for several seconds, so if the topic is shifting quickly, choose your links carefully.

This should be a fun exercise, but please take it seriously.  Don’t volunteer for more than one episode at a time, and please complete them in a timely manner.  Again, I reserve editorial power, so don’t get all upset if what winds up online isn’t exactly what you submitted.  I’ll try to keep you in the loop though; the idea is to make this easier for me, not harder.

As a perk, you will have a chapter just for yourself, as thanks, so link to your site, and choose a picture (tasteful please) if you want to.   Otherwise you’ll get just a standard “This Enhancement brought to you by _______” chapter, and that’s it.

Again, anyone is eligible, but as I don’t have time for “try outs” make the most of your first choice.  If I’m not getting what I need from you I’ll have to disregard your entries, so let’s not get to that point.

Just submit the episode you want to do in this thread.  First come first serve, so if there’s one you want, grab it, but please be able to complete it within a week.  I don’t want to impose hard deadlines unless I need to, so for now, let’s say if you post your request on Monday the 6th, have it turned in by Sunday the 12th, or it will become available again the 13th. Clear?

I’ll give everyone a few days to ask questions and decide on which episode they’d like to do before I open the forum for selection.  You have until 12:00 noon, EST on Thursday August 9th to ask questions; at that time the bidding will open, bids placed before that time will not be counted.

Final archive files will be mailed to me at matt.vayda@gmail.com

So, questions?  Who’s in?

Not sure what we'd do with the cash.

You keep encouraging people to buy stuff from our Amazon link because "We get a dollar." Let's not pooh-pooh dollars.

Things we could do with the cash:

-Pay for our weekly snacks.
-Pay for the rental/purchase of the films we view.
-Pay for upgrades/repairs/replacements for the recording equipment.
-Pay for any bandwidth/website costs.
-Pay our website admin a little something for his trouble.
-Pay Vayda a little something for his trouble.
-If we wanted to do some kind of contest at some point down the road, we could buy some nice prizes.
-If we have money in the coffers and can't think of ways to spend it, the people who have to commute in some way to the Labs could get a few bucks for gas money.

I am so completely not in on this gig to make money. The way we're doing it now is fine and fun. But if we could find ways that participating in the show cost a little less money in one way or another, I don't see a downside.

But failing that, word of mouth is good too.

So glad forum members are bringing this up; thanks for the suggestion.  Dorkman makes some excellent points.  Right now the majority of the show is paid for out of one guy’s pocket, and he’s perfectly happy with that, as are the rest of us happy to keep going just as we have been.

That said, there are a few other ideas I've been trying to implement.

1.) Netfilx affiliate.  Netflix streaming is hands down just plain awesome; we highly endorse this product.  The basic package is like $9 / month, and there are tons of movies and t.v. shows you can stream instantly.  The quality is pretty good too.  The way we would implement it is with a banner or icon or link on the site.  Click the link, sign up for the free 30 day trial.  You can cancel after the 30 days, but I don't think you'll want to, especially for $9 / month.  We get a referral for every customer that signs up via our link, even if they cancel after the trial, and the kickbacks for us are pretty good, by far the most profitable.  We think it's a service that rocks, you are under no commitment to keep it (but we think you will want to), and we get paid just for getting folks to try it.  You get a great service, and help us out at the same time.  So that's pretty much win-win.

2.) iTunes affiliate.  Many of the films we cover are available to buy or rent on iTunes.  It's like Netfix in that you can click now, watch now.  I'm pretty sure when we did The Core that was an iTunes rental.  Rentals are only $3-$4, so it's a reasonable way to watch a movie you might not have seen, but don't want to buy outright.  Again, it would be an easy link somewhere; click, opens iTunes, brings up the store.  Like Amazon we get like a buck, and again, it’s a service that we use.

3.) PayPal.  Good old fashion donations.  I see this working two ways; one as a “Donate here” button, throw us what you want, when you can; and two, as a regular membership.  Maybe we could integrate some sort of sponsorship icon, a gold star or something in the forum next to the member's name depending on how much / often they donate.  A full membership would be something like $10 every 6 months which gets you a special identifier in your profile and in the forums, and maybe access to commentaries early, as we finish them.  Dunno, I'm open to suggestion as to membership extras; you tell us, what would you want if you were getting everything you get now, and throwing us $20 / year?  What sort of perks would make that worth it?

I would further implement an actual commerce page; one page that will take you to Amazon, Netfilx, iTunes, PayPal, Cafe Press, and whatever else we might incorporate in the future.

When I come across folks generating regular compelling content I enjoy that offer an easy and convenient way of thanking them financially, I know I don’t mind throwing them a few bucks to help them out.   I know if I were still just a regular listener and one day a “Donate to the DIF Pizza fund” or some such button became available, I’d throw in a couple bucks, and that’s really all we’re talking about.  The point is, if it’s not there for folks to take advantage of, they can’t.

I know that a good deal of the resistance to these ideas comes from the notion that if we start asking people for money, we’ll be seen as just that, guys out to make a buck.  You all can let us know if that’s the impression you’re getting, but I hope we’ve made it clear that’s not the case.   Amazon, Netflix and iTunes are all services we use and would recommend to anyone, regardless of what was in it for us.

The Amazon store has been up for months now, and I think we’ve been pretty good about letting folks know it’s there, without being overbearing about it.  Same goes for this stuff.  We want you to want to help us out, in your own way, to your own degree, and give you the means to do so.  That’s it.

”Like Down in Front? Want to help us out?  Check out our commerce page, there’s a lot of good stuff there.”

Discuss.

Teague: The only reason to hang on to the MP3s that I can think of would have to do with the streaming aspect of the flash player.  That's a question for our webmaster.  Other than that you should be able to link the RSS feed and Download links to an MP4 with a code tweak.  Again, possibly a question for the webmaster, but those two should be easy.

From what I understand ACC encoding is a bit more stable, compatible, and results in slightly smaller files at any given bit rate.  A quick Google search for MP3 vs. ACC should yield a few answers.

All I know is that for the Enhanced part of the file to work it has to be ACC.

Invid: If feedback for the format is positive, and we can work everything out properly, I would indeed be willing to remaster old episodes, time permitting; I've got rather a lot on my plate right now.  Perhaps a community effort could be organized.  I'd love to go back and Enhance all our episodes, but that would be a huge undertaking for me alone.  I don't want to derail this thread, so keep your eyes out for a thread along those lines.  Glad you enjoyed the episode, and I hope you like the Enhancement!

It works fine on my classic ipod and I liked it a lot. More pics please, they were a little sparse towards the end. And maybe leave them on screen a little longer. Looking forward to next week.

A friendly suggestion: Maybe you could ask for donations like Filmspotting. I get the impression they're swimming in cash. Yes i know they have more listeners.

Glad to hear they work on other equipment.  I have a 5G iPod lying around here somewhere, I keep meaning to load the thing on to it.  For the pictures I arbitrarily chose 30 seconds, unless something else came up, or the conversation stayed on that topic for a while, but I can certainly make them stay on screen longer.  As for more pictures, each one needs to be resized so that it will fit in the 300 x 300 art window.   For this episode I did them all one by one in Photoshop, but I'd like to figure out a way to automate it, or at least make it a drag and drop operation if anyone has any ideas in that area.  Right now that's the aspect that's the most laborious.

And thanks for the suggestion.  I agree with Dorkman on all points.  We have the Amazon store, but there are a few other ideas I've been trying to implement, but I'll start a new tread in Off Topic for that.

Keep the feedback coming!
