This week: our first "Intermission"-style episode! What We Watched in 2015: Part I spends most of its time covering this year's releases, from the good (Mad Max, Inside Out, Ex Machina, Hannibal, Daredevil) to the bad (Avengers: Age of Ultron, Terminator: Genisys) to the contested (Inherent Vice). We also briefly delve into past releases that we saw for the first time this year (The Babadook, Blue Is the Warmest Colour, etc.). It's certainly the most fun we've had with an episode so far.

Next week will see the release of the second episode we recorded yesterday: the first of three planned episodes devoted to the leadup to The Force Awakens. We cover Comic-Con, speculate a bit, and in general just nerd all over the place.

I had no idea who the director was, but I just got out of the movie and it did indeed feel like a mediocre two-part episode of a television series. And such an ugly thing to look at, too.

Nicely done, man, that looks great.

I feel like I'm ten again. I haven't been excited for anything like this in *years*. For whatever reason seeing Daniels get put into the suit is what gave me the chills in this one.

I finally got to a break in Audio books to listen to your ROTS commentary. What is with your group of young republicans shouting down the slightest hint of politics?

Weirdly enough, Pigeon is actually a liberal, he just wants to avoid controversy--I explained to him after that episode that no one really cares. Jb is...interesting. We basically have him on because he's very knowledgeable about Star Wars and comics, but he's also a young earth creationist, strong conservative, etc. We don't plan on having him on for most political movies, we just had to make an exception for Star Wars.

Hey guys! We've been on a month-long hiatus due to Nate's various travels, but next Friday we're coming back with a non-commentary episode. We'll be talking about our year in film and television so far: the good, the bad and the ugly, from Hannibal to Mad Max to Blue is the Warmest Colour to Apocalypse Now.

I think this film is a true mixed bag. There's a lot that's beautifully truthful and heartfelt, but there's also a lot that's cliche and regressive too. Not the worst Pixar film, but it feels more like a distant echo of their best work than a true return to form.

And Lava is, excuse the pun, hot garbage.

I noticed your tweets on the same, I'm curious as to which aspects you single out as regressive?

The fact that Lava even needed lyrics at all was a warning sign when it started playing--correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it the first Pixar short to significantly rely on spoken words at all? All the others have needed is strength of concept and visuals.

The first thing I thought when I saw the announcement was "Shit, Doc's gonna spontaneously combust."

We need to talk about this movie. It's my new favorite Pixar film, and might even be their best.

It combines all their greatest elements. It has to be one of their best "secret life of" concepts, and is definitely the one they do the most with besides maybe Monsters, Inc. It packs all the emotional punch of Up (I teared up four times) without that movie's dubious magic-beaning. Visually it's consistently inventive, and one sequence in particular, when Joy, Sadness and Bing-Bong stumble into the land of Abstract Thought, has to be the single cleverest bit of animation I've seen in a 3D animated film. Most important, it's a return to successfully exploring genuinely affecting subject matter, and this may in fact be their most mature exploration of a theme--namely, how sadness leads to empathy, and the intermingling of emotions both positive and negative is what makes us human and what helps us to be content.

In short, loved the hell out of it and will be seeing at least once more, probably twice. If Monsters U was the cough of Pixar's engine revving again, this is a true return to form, and one that matches if not exceeds the best of their efforts. I went in hoping it wouldn't be a Brave, and those expectations were blown away.

That question was actually asked of a crew member on RotS. The response was "They're lightsabers, not mood rings."

So the Casino Royale commentary went horribly wrong, with Charles' file failing to save properly. The resulting attempt at salvaging his audio is far too hit and miss for this to serve as a proper episode, but I'll be damned if ten hours of frantic cleanup is going to waste (long story short, I had to amplify his audio bleed by like 70 decibels and then noise-remove it as best as possible). tongue Thus this week's episode, approximately 3/4 of a proper commentary, is entitled Episode 6.5: The Casino Royale Tapes.

Getting back into seriously playing piano after two years of just noodling around with pop covers. Feels bloody wonderful, although that's mingled with my embarrassment at how rusty I am.

So sorry, Pav. That's devastating.

This week's episode: Revenge of the Sith finishes the prequels not with a bang but with a NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO After the break, b-roll covers topics as diverse as audio editing, Nate's current illness, and the Star Wars Holiday Special.

Next week, atheist Graham, Christian Kyle and apatheist Nate take on God's Not Dead; in addition to just generally ragging on the film, we're hoping to dissect what could make "message" movies work and why this one doesn't. Following that, Nate steps into the host's chair for a Casino Royale love-fest.

Speaking of the different turns of phrase used in the film, I think I've fallen in love with the word "schlanger".

This week's episode: Watchmen! (The theatrical cut.) I think this is our best one so far—it was a blast to record, and we struck what I hope is the right balance between humorous tangents and genuine film critique/philosophical discussion (the latter sounds pretentious, but hey, this is the movie for it).

Next time we'll be wrapping up the prequels with Revenge of the Sith; following that, Nate will be curating Casino Royale.

Listening right now. On the bad editing of the Force speed: I didn't realize that power was even a thing until a year or so ago, it was so unclear what happened. I assumed they'd Force-leapt up a vent or something.

Belated appreciation: this album and Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly are what finally allowed me to break through a musical barrier and appreciate rap, and your review was the reason I picked up the former. Thanks so much for that!

...I really don't get superhero comics.

It seems like it must be the sort of thing where you either "learned" to enjoy the comic book format at a young age, or you didn't. Such a weird barrier to entry.

I think it may have less to do with the format and more to do with that particular genre of it. I was never a comics reader when I was a kid, but I've been able to dive into Alan Moore and Neil Gaiman's stuff just fine. The new Star Wars series too. Standard superhero comics, however, still throw me for a loop. I think it's a combination of, in a lot of cases, the overly saturated art and the gee-whiz dialogue; it's really damn hard to take them seriously when coupled together.

Gonna finally properly watch the streams tomorrow, but I may as well ask now since Teague was worried about forgetting people--Teague, did you receive my submission when I sent it in?

Also, just from skimming through said streams, holy hell we have a lot of talent in this place. big_smile It's almost as if we all do creative stuff for a living or something. wink
