Well, I say it's not Star Trek because (to me anyway) the thing that made Star Trek distinctive is that it didn't say "it's science fiction, so anything goes".   Especially for a '60's tv show, that was a pretty radical stance to take.   It set out to establish some hard-science ground rules, and even though it also made up some of its theoretical technology, it mostly kept to the rules it laid out.

And one of the earliest and non-negotiable rules was the Enterprise is not meant to function in atmosphere.    That's why it had such a bizarro shape.   That's why it had shuttlecraft that were aerodynamic.

That alone made Star Trek stand out when it first debuted - they dared to have a "spaceship" that didn't look like a Buck Rogers rocket.   Even that minimal amount of understanding of what space travel truly might be like set Star Trek apart from any tv show that came before it (and a lot of them since).

This new thingamawhizzy with the Star Trek label starts out with the Enterprise not just blithely tootling about in atmosphere, but going underwater.   This is the filmic equivalent of giving a five-year-old an Enterprise toy and him taking it into the bath with him.  Sure, it's fun but it's ridiculous.

It does answer one question I had from the first movie - if they assembled the Enterprise on Earth, how the heck did it get into space?  I thought maybe there was some clever rationalization for that, but now we know the answer - JJ and company think that's how the Enterprise works.

That's how the movie starts, by the end they're actually ignoring the rules of freakin' gravity in order to justify another kickass action sequence.

It's actually an entertaining movie in that a lot of exciting stuff happens, but it really is like a five-year-old in a bathtub full of Trek action figures without any understanding of anything, including basic physics.   I found it ultimately insulting, just as I do any movie that expects me to swallow a pound of dumb for an ounce of action.  It's just a little extra sad that this particular dumb movie has a Star Trek label on it.

So Spielberg and Lucas have figured out what some of us already knew - the film industry is "imploding".

"I think eventually the Lincolns will go away and they're going to be on television," Lucas said. "As mine almost was," Spielberg interjected. "This close -- ask HBO -- this close."

"We're talking Lincoln and Red Tails -- we barely got them into theaters. You're talking about Steven Spielberg and George Lucas can't get their movie into a theater," Lucas said.

"I got more people into Lincoln than you got into Red Tails," Spielberg joked.

Jeebus.  The whole time I was watching this I was wondering "How in the HELL did they get away with shooting all this at the Guggenheim Museum?"

So I looked it up, and the answer is even more amazing than I thought - that's not the Guggenheim, it's a studio set re-creation of the Guggenheim.     Wow.

btw, if you're not following Lena Headey on Twitter, you should.  It's possible she's insane, but she's also hilarious.

For example, tonight she posted this:

In a perfect world, Jordan Gavaris would get some nominations for playing Felix as well.  Fingers crossed.

And just a few minutes ago, lead actress Tatiana Maslany won the Critic's Choice award for best actress in a drama.   Woot!

The show's been very low on the radar so far, the season ended with miniscule ratings although it's been gaining ground since day one due to word of mouth.  And the lead actress just beat Claire Danes, Vera Farmiga,  Julianna Margulies, Elisabeth Moss and Keri Russell tonight - that should help raise the industry profile a bit.

The best news - despite the low ratings the show's already been renewed for a second season.   So get over to iTunes or Amazon this minute and get on board, so you can be all cool later and say you were always a fan.

Ramsay Snow brings the crazy even better than Joffrey.   Gotta give 'em credit for casting that role perfectly.

By the end of next season he'll likely have taken over the title of Most-Hated Character.

SPOILER Show
Of course by then Joffrey will be out of the running, but still...  wink

When you write The Game of Thrones, you finish or you die.

SPOILER Show
Yeah, I'm not talking about shockers on the scale of the RW - but there were so many things they could have teased that suggest new directions and plotlines for the show next season.

The show clearly will go in those directions - they've set up just about everything we've discussed in this thread, just didn't land any of them tonight.   That's their choice and I'm sure they agonized over every detail - but the early responses to the episode have a lot of folks saying "huh, not a lot happened this week".

Not that anything they did was bad - we know where Arya's headed next season, and they sowed the  seeds for the Lannister family troubles that are coming.  Sansa's starting to get devious, she's just not thinking big enough yet.    Thank god, they finally gave some resolution to the Theon storyline.    And we're all set for the Wildling battle at the Wall, where the Jon/Ygritte/Stannis stories will all pay off together.

But right until the very end - especially with all the track they laid toward it - I figured Bran and Pals would emerge north of the Wall - and run smack into a Walker.  Oh crap, roll credits.   Or - give it another thirty seconds and show us that THIS Walker is... benign?  After all the buildup of Walkers as the ultimate threat, that'd be a solid WTF to go out on.

Instead, we got Dany crowdsurfing - a pretty unsatisfying way to end the season.  She essentially won the city last week, this scene felt like filler.  We've seen this before, and dragons flying overhead and shrieking doesn't have the novelty it once did.

EDIT:   Also, the rest of the world has sort of forgotten about Dany - all season she's had very little connection to the rest of the plot.   Introducing the Ser-Jorah-is-a-spy reveal might have helped remind us why we're still even following her.

No book or even specific show spoilers contained below, but just playin' it safe. smile

SPOILER Show

Over in the book-readin' thread we've been speculating on all the upcoming twists they could have gotten to in the season finale.  They went right to the brink of a half-dozen of them... and stopped there.     So they've got a lot of great stuff set up for next season... but it made for a rather flat season finale, I thought.

But what the heck - they're renewed already so they'll be back regardless of how the finale is received. smile

Well, just saw the season finale, and...

SPOILER Show
they took every plotline right to the brink of the big turning points we've talked about... and then didn't follow through with any of them.   I can understand wanting to hold back and not do ALL of them... but none?

Although there was nothing I'd call bad about the episode, as a season finale it seemed a little anticlimactic.   Hey, it's not my show, so what do I know?  smile

But at least they're all locked and loaded to have all kinds of craziness go down at the start of next season...

Yeah, it's weird the way he keeps saying that.

Anyway, hey!  Wie Geht's?

Over the course of the books so far, there've been like, fifty key characters.   Some of them have died.   From a demographc perspective it's not too surprising.

Of course, there's also been an ongoing war - so the body count for not-so-important characters has been brutal.  smile

I'm sure they've already done an enormous amount of testing and are at least somewhat confident about their methods at this point.

Oh I'm sure they have, too.   My point was just that even if you didn't have a plan at ALL, why not go ahead and get the data?   I would.  Ya never know.

However you get there, the ideal result would be a dragon that was believable as a dragon and yet somehow also had the presence of  Benedict Cumberbatch.  That could be quite something.

And Jackson and WETA do have a pretty good track record with this mocap thing already  smile

Tippett designed the Dragonheart dragon, they did a big sculpt of it - and maybe did the original CG modeling too, not sure - but the rest of the work was done at ILM.

Pretty sure it was all done keyframe animation, tho.  ILM at the time, like most places, was not big on mocap.  In them days only us crazy people were trying to use mocap for production. smile

The problem with any "talking animal" project is that most animal's mouths aren't shaped to form human speech to begin with.  Even if a dog knew how to talk, it would have a pretty bizarre speech impediment (although I'd love to hear what that actually would sound like).

Here's the Draco model Tippett did - notice he's actually got a very non-dragon-y face.  It's almost simian instead... because he was going to be talking.

So however they decide to have Smaug articulate his words, there's going to be cheating involved.  However, now that mocap is so much easier to use, there's no reason NOT to put your actor in a suit and let him have at it, even if you haven't a clue how or if you'll do anything with that data.

Also, Mr. Cumberbatch is a very talented actor, but I doubt he's going to be hanging around with the animators for months while they massage the data.  (Andy Serkis does, but he's an anomaly.)

So Bennie told a reporter about doing a mocap session because he did a mocap session.   Whether or not the animators use that data, they'll probably never tell him, and he'll never know. smile

Hey, something else about last week's episode:

Animators are still plentiful and important.  A good animator can take mocap data if asked to, and know what to use and what to enhance.   A snarky animator will call it The Devil's Rotoscope and be a sad panda, but that's their problem.

It CAN be a ridiculous idea if used incorrectly.    It can also be really useful if used properly.   Just like everything else.

Seconded.   Although I give Anna Kendrick a lot of credit for classing up the joint as much as possible.

Rebel Wilson was clearly hired to do the same schtick she did in Bridesmaids, just too much of it and not as sharply written.    And I figured there'd be at least some kickass musical numbers, but blown away I was not.

Especially Anna Kendrick's "audition".    Is tapping a plastic cup and moaning softly considered musical skill now?  I feel like there was a punchline that I missed on that one.

But, as with many movies, I am not the target audience.  I can see teenage girls digging that movie all to hell and back and good for them.  It's pretty much their Revenge of the Nerds.   Just not mine.
