I agree entirely with writhyn. But if i can also just point out in defence of the dad: his daughter plays hockey, theyve played hockey as a family her entire life. Hockey is clearly a big part of thier lives. So yeah dad was thinking about hockey at dinner. Woopty fuckin doo.

Nice. It's definitely a very different "feeling" game, P1 is very ambient and kinda creepy, with a splash of humour. P2, has a lot more outright humour mixed in with a bit of ambient and not nearly as much creepy. But I don't think it suffers, I think trying to recreate that sort of tone in P2 wouldn't have worked, it would be like you said, just too much of the same.

I have a lot of love for both games, I'm in the middle of a revisit of Portal 1 right now, and I had honestly forgotten a lot about that game. It's really good, but I think the mystery/ambient/creepy factor of it only works because it's so short.

And yes, Wheatley is fantastic. When P2 trailers were first coming out I thought he looked like the stupidest thing on the face of the planet and would completely ruin it. But turns out he's one of my favorite parts of it all.

I've only played a bit of the co-op so I can't really comment, but there are A LOT of really awesome custom maps with full storylines out there in the Community Testing Initiative. And a new one just got released here a couple days ago called Mel, created by one of the games that runs one of the larger Portal fan film channels on youtube. I'm hopefully gonna get a chance to check it out sometime this week.

And cause why not, cause it's one of my favorite shorts Harry101uk has done...cause you know...space core:

Not really much more to be said, saw it last night and it exceeded my wildest dreams.

Which weren't high, to be honest. With Pixar's recent string, and the trailers that just REALLY weren't doing anything for me (The concept was amazing, but what the trailers were showing just weren't anything to get hyped up over) I fully expected another mediocre note in a dying song.

But wow, this movie. Like whoah dude, man, this movie. I never in my life would have thought A) Pixar would make a movie about an 11 year old girl getting depressed and running away from home, and B) That it would make me laugh out loud in a theatre more than any movie I have ever seen in a theatre in my life and then turn around and gut punch me right in the childhood. I mean...what? Why? How?? WHAA? Not cool Pixar, so not cool. I was totally not prepared for that.

So yeah, enough on that, can we talk for a second here about that short? Lava?

Was I the only one SERIOUSLY underwhelmed by it? Probably my least favorite pixar short to date, almost verging on just straight up un-enjoyable.

The song was one note and grating to have to listen to for more than 5 seconds, and the entire thing was based on a SERIOUSLY bad pun? I mean, really guys? That's what you're doing? Uuuugh, fine.

I mean it was gorgeous...ish...the design of the two volcanoes were...uh...well...good...try...uh guys. Solid attempt. *thumbs up* I was about the say that all of the animation and rendering and everything was great as well, but even then the opening couple shots flying over the volcano were gorgeous but then it just...stopped doing that. And then the rest felt really bizarrely flat and kinda half measured.

Maybe I just really wasn't in the mood for it or something, but it just really wasn't making it work for me.

I'm pretty sure it's just something we're supposed to take as read that it's someone he failed to save and it's haunted him ever since.

I assumed it was a callback to the first movies since I've never seen em, but if it's not in those then I guess it's something that happened off screen. It never bothered me.

I can dig it. So here's the plan. I'll set up a new thread for the Preferential Voting suggestions, give everyone a week to suggest, and a week to vote. Then this week just pick a new random movie to cover those two weeks?

That enough time you think?

Here's the thing. I put out daily content. I spend ~2 days a week during the day playing games, to record enough content. So any time I have that I'm not doing that, is spent doing the 15 million other projects I do on a regular basis.

The amount of time I've spent playing video games and NOT recording (Or doing prep work to record something) in the past few years could just about fill a teacup. If at some point in the future I have the additional time to play a game I'm not recording then, A, it'll be a gawddang miracle, and B, I will.

So no, these days, if I'm not recording a video game, I'm not playing it.

ugh. Dude. You have no idea.

Someone claimed MY intro, like 100% my own visuals that I made in after effects from the ground up, on like 15 videos one time. My last episode of Bioshock 2 Minerva's Den got flagged for the custom soundtrack music used in the closing montage, even though it was written FOR that game and should technically fall under their blanket release for LPer's, because it's a licsenced piece of music through another company, I get fucked for the whole video.

I could fucking rant about ContentID bullshit all day man.

Yeah, I have no idea how much of the Star Wars news in unsubstantiated and just people hearsaying. But it's a big enough concern that I'm not testing it. Plus I don't like to put anything up without some solid version of a release.

Nintendo has gotten better... sorta. They'll generally leave you alone if you're not monetizing videos (Again, some people say yes, some say no), and a while back they introduced their partner system where you could register with them and monetize their content but they'd take a cut of the earnings. Which I and a lot of other people rightly consider a giant pile of horse shit. But it's better than it was.

And yeah, I just got hit by the Valve thing, I just put up my first episode of a revisit of Portal yesterday. It got hit by some assholes claiming the Portal menu screen. Luckily I disputed it and they had the claim released in time for me to release it yesterday morning with monetization intact. But it still sucked.

Also funny you bring your whole thing up Squiggy. I'm rewatching eXistenZ literally as I'm typing this and that deals with the whole idea of a video game that replicates real life (ish) in terms of making choices and discovering where you need to be and what you need to do. Really interesting Cronenberg flick if you've never seen it. I love the hell out of it.

The issue is that no one really knows who to talk to, LucasArts doesn't exist in any real fashion any more, and I'm not even sure if Disney knows they own the responsibility for this stuff. I'm gonna talk to my network about it, but there are tons of rumours and stories of people getting their stuff pulled even for having something Star Wars video game related.

It's not like Nintendo where they outright said "LOL, no, we'll claim that shit like it's gold". It's just a cluster of confusion for anyone trying to get permission legit, and there's to many stories for me to just say f- it and go for it.

DUUUUUUUDE. Portal 2 is FANTASTIC.

And if LucasArts/Disney/Whoeverdafuck owns the rights now weren't so douchey over the whole youtube thing, I would totally be playing KOTOR. But as it is, it will have to remain unplayed sad Maybe one day.

Theon's switch didnt come out of nowhere. They've been building up to it all season long.

They've been building up to it, but every single time we see him he always revert back to Reek. And in this, his switch is basically entirely off screen. It's just all off a sudden Reek throws the evil chick off the bridge and Theon's back. At least a shot of his face making a decision or something would have been nice.

And alright fair enough, crazy russians. I guess it's just getting exaggerated in my head because of how weird everything else about that scene and the episode is.

Writhyn wrote:

How about Pacific islanders? I'm currently basing a culture off an amalgam of Norse and Maori culture.

That's fair enough. I guess in that case you could throw in Atlantis (Disney) and The Road To Eldorado. Although I'm not sure how those fair on the "doesn't offend the natives" scale. And they're hardly GoT in scale or tone.

Although RE: Norse, I guess it kinda depends on how you draw your map of Europe.

Oh, okay, if that's the case I rread that wrong as well. Although I'm trying to think what there is outside European, Asian or African. That kinda encompasses the whole ancient world that thesse kind of stories build on.

Although I mean I could tell you the stories of the mighty Moose wars, and the Beaver tribes I guess.

Its not really a fantasy story in this setting. But Tad Williams' Otherland series includes a lot of concepts and imagery inspired by some South African aborigines tribes. One of the lead characters is a man from a tribe of bushmen in South Africa that wants to preserve the stories and mythology of his people using the modern VI tech the rest of the story is based around.

From what I understand a lot of what Tad came up with and uses is inspired by a lot of real aborigines stories, although none of it is "actual" mythology.

Edit: Typing on phones is hard guyz.

Yeah that was weird. Youtube does a lot of buggery with thier links if you're hotlinked from somewhere else. I had to get a completely new link by right clicking on the video on youtube, paste that into the url, and then get the new full link after that, then delete the s.

Could be, it's easy to get so conditioned by the violence and gore to expect it whenever a character is killed but I don't believe that the absence of a shot with Stannis' head rolling across the snow should be taken as a sign.

That's not even close to what I'm saying. Have Stannis head roll off completely off screen for all I care, that's all it would take to confirm it. But you're really telling me you're okay with not seeing what that does to Brienne? This man she's vowed to get vengeance on  for the past 3 seasons suddenly at the end of the sword. They have a great little interchange but then it just cuts away, and sure we can speculate and probably make a pretty accurate guess of how Brienne will react to it, but we never got to see it. And I'm not saying there needs to be some giant soliloquy on her part, one shot would do it. But as it is right now, it's robbing the audience of closure for Stannis timeline, and robbing Brienne of closure in the mind of the audience UNLESS they're pulling some bullshit, and she didn't actually kill him.

As I said toa firned last night, he felt they were going to come back after a commercial break and Brienne was going to swing into the tree instead and not kill him for some bizarre reason. Cause that's exactly how you do that if you're going to do that.

As for Jon, it's kinda the same thing. And what Faldor said, it all just feels too loose. Game of Thrones has never had an issue before saying "Nope this guys definitely dead, like all dead." whenever it happens. So to have so many kinda wishy washy "maybe they dead?" conclusions (Stannis, Jon, Theon, Sansa) it just feels strange.

Of course, his death reveals that ultimately Stannis is doomed to fail in the books as well.

"Death" might be stretching the concept of what they did a bit far. With both him and Jon they did that cheeky "not gonna show them actually dying, but you can totally trust us they're dead, cause we would never make you think something like that and then reverse it later" thing.

Stannis was particularly bad, for how much of this season has been devoted to Stannis, to have his death be dicked around with the stupid cut away thing feels...just a bit to much like they're trying to do a thing. And same with Jon, they held that shot just a bit too long and focused just a bit too much on that blood for them not to be trying to do a "thing".

Who knows I could be totally wrong and they just decided to say fuck it and kill Stannis off camera, and do some weir editing thing with Jon. But the way it was presented it just felt like they were trying just a bit too hard to do something.

Hey give me a little credit.

It was like 6 months ago. tongue

But I wasn't really talking about the "longing" aspect of it, just the game mechanics part. I was never a gamer growing up, so I don't really have anything comparable anyways.

We used to have one of these, apparently it's vanished into the ethers of forums forgot. So I'm making another one.

The trailer just dropped for the feature film I've been helping a friend of mine with. I did a fair bit of cam op and booming, done a couple vfx things and have been helping out with general post productiony type things. This entire project has been about as close to zero budget as it's possible to get without an act of several gods, and it's their first feature.

I'm not sure if or when the entire thing is going to be released, as far as I know he's primarily going to be doing the festival thing for a while. But go over and show him some love anyway big_smile

Also, I honestly can't think of a way to make that play without entering immediately into melodrama territory.

I mean...even more melodrama territory.
