I remember being sad when you guys said you didn't care for the score in this one. One of my favorite Potter pieces, "Harry in Winter", is in this film's soundtrack. So gorgeous.

How this works: I start off by listing a matchup between two films; for example; Fight Club vs. The Princess Bride. The next poster chooses the winner and pits it against a new challenger. So it'll look something like this:

Darth Praxus: Fight Club vs. The Princess Bride
Boter: The Princess Bride vs. Raiders of the Lost Ark
Dorkman: Raiders of the Lost Ark vs. Now You See Me

And so forth.

So, to start it off: Fight Club vs. The Princess Bride

I haven't thought about it in depth, but I'd risk giving Her a nomination.

Or hey, how about Monsters University?

Basically anything Pixar save Cars 2 would be great, especially the Toy Story films for their merits and Brave for discussing a fix.

Dorkman wrote:

It's like FORREST GUMP, it there were no flashbacks, and he wasn't retarded but his story was.

That's a hell of an analogy. XD

I keep thinking that I should see it again, but I honestly don't know if I could handle it. Especially now that I know how it ends.

Yeah, it was rough watching it and seeing all the happy bits knowing what was coming, though at the same time that almost improved the experience in some ways, I think.

Kinda goes without saying at this point, but I can't wait for you guys to do a commentary on Her. Just got back from seeing it for the second time in as many days, and goddamn.

Your post reads like it's arguing with me, but it backs up the point I'm making, so I'm confused.

Sorry, should've been clearer; what I'm saying is that The Man from Earth is, from what I see online (never seen it), played straight. Stuff that's excusable in a satire (such as Hiro Protagonist) is not in straight fiction, which is why it's satirized to begin with.

Never heard of The Man From Earth before now, but apparently the 14,000-year-old main character is named John Oldman so I don't see a lot of potential.

The main character of one of my favorite books, Snow Crash, is named Hiro Protagonist, so I wouldn't judge it by that alone.

Except that's clearly satirical in nature—plus it's not even Hiro's actual name; he made it up because, as he tells Y.T., "It's stupid, but you'll never forget it". Snow Crash in general is a satire on cyberpunk and not meant to be taken seriously in many of its aspects.

Had this been four years ago when I was still a raving R/Hr shipper, this would have infuriated me. As is, meh. I don't think H/Hr have much in the way of chemistry in the books; the films definitely amped it up.

I don't get the Affleck hate either. He was really good in Good Will Hunting, and his weaker moments in Dogma were less his fault and more the script's. Granted, that's only two points of data on my graph, but as Teague has said, that's still a line. tongue

Couldn't find a thread for this topic, and I wanted to post about it as they've just announced the casting of two new leads: Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor and Jeremy Irons as Alfred. Thoughts?

I've only ever watched Raiders, The Princess Bride, and the Potter films along with the commentary. Most of the time I just listen to episodes while on my daily walk/late at night when I can't sleep. Or, in the case of the Malariathon, late at night and early in the morning. tongue

I really need to see that shootout between the crew, the Klingons and Khan again. In the theater I had no fucking idea who was shooting at who, who hit what, or where anyone was positioned. I don't recall the shootout aboard Nero's ship in Star Trek '09 being nearly as chaotic or logistically incomprehensible.

I really wish I knew why I can follow this film no problem and it doesn't bother me.

I don't think it is the greatest film ever but it certainly is not a bad movie, for me. I enjoy the character development and social commentary. The action stuff is hit or miss but it doesn't break the movie for me.

I'm honestly curious, what development of any kind do you see? Because as far as I could see not a thing changed in any of the characters.

Doctor Submarine wrote:

"Inconsequential" is a great way to describe the music. A lot of the songs seem to be there just because it's a Disney movie and there are supposed to be songs. The song that the trolls sing is a good example. It's also, weirdly, the last song in the film.

What's even worse about the troll song is that it destroys the pacing. Anna is DYING, and they choose to take five minutes to do a song-and-dance number about relationships.
