Topic: Batman vs. Superman
Couldn't find a thread for this topic, and I wanted to post about it as they've just announced the casting of two new leads: Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor and Jeremy Irons as Alfred. Thoughts?

Jeremy Irons is an interesting choice, I honestly wouldn't have ever pictured him as Alfred.
That's certainly a departure from comic book Lex. Zuckerberg-y Silicon Valley type? I have no idea what they plan on doing with him but Jesse can act so... cool.
Which is more than I can say for Ben Affleck.

I SO do not get the Affleck hate.
He's not good. He's weak, even when he directs himself.

Me neither. It was only a few months beforehand that everyone was talking about his creative resurgence, and what a disappointment it was that he wasn't nominated for Best Director. Then all of a sudden he's cast in a big blockbuster and everyone hates his guts. What gives?
There is a HUGE difference between Ben the actor and Ben the director. I think he's a fantastic director.
Unlike Ledger or Nicholson, nothing in Ben's history suggests he even capable of above average acting.
You not Ben. He Ben.
I don't get the Affleck hate either. He was really good in Good Will Hunting, and his weaker moments in Dogma were less his fault and more the script's. Granted, that's only two points of data on my graph, but as Teague has said, that's still a line.
I thank the gods that we only barely had an Internet in the era when they announced Michael Keaton was going to play Batman.
I wasn't a Batman fan back then either, but even MY first thought was "MICHAEL KEATON? That's the weirdest casting choice ever." And it still is, in my opinion. Casting Affleck at least makes sense.
The modern equivalent of casting Keaton - who had been the "zany guy" in a couple of successful comedies but was nowhere near a "movie star" - would be somebody like... I dunno... Jay Baruchel or one of the guys from Big Bang Theory.
But apparently Keaton did okay. I still maintain it doesn't matter who's in the suit, as long as there aren't nipples on it.

That's true assuming Ben Affleck's role in the movie is mostly as Batman. Put on a gruff voice, have a chin, and look like a badass when you stand in the corner with your cape wrapped around your shoulders. Costuming and cinematography will do most of the heavy-lifting, and Zack Snyder has proven himself to have impeccable taste with regard to those areas.
But if they do something like Bruce Timm did with the World's Finest crossover on Superman: TAS and have a significant subplot involving Bruce Wayne and Lex Luthor... I dunno, that feels iffy to me. Nolan's films pretty well nailed the Bruce Wayne public persona, and if you slot Ben Affleck into that type of scenario I don't see it working. I'm going in optimistic on this one, and I hope I'm pleasantly surprised, but I have a very hard time envisioning Ben Affleck working in the Bruce Wayne role.
Jeremy Irons makes total sense as Alfred, and I can see Eisenberg being an interesting Luthor in any number of unexpected ways. Affleck's still the big question mark for me. Fortunately I'm suffering from serious superhero fatigue and thought Man of Steel was a pretty dull, ineffective movie, so I'm not super invested in this. But they're getting me curious with all these left-field choices.

I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror
I can totally picture Affleck as Bruce Wayne. And I think Eisenberg has a lot of potential with Lex Luthor.
I have a hard time picturing Jeremy Irons as Alfred, because when I think of him I think of hammier roles. First thing I saw him in was as the saving grace of the first Dungeons & Dragons.
Maybe I should watch Kingdom of Heaven again to remind myself he can do real roles and gravitas, too.
