The villains really mess up this film almost as much as Willis' ego does. It definitely has it's moments, especially the first act but it's a huge mess in regards to tone. It made me like David Caruso, though, so it's not all bad big_smile

The term 'fascinating failure' is a great way to describe it.

This is interesting to me. I'm hearing this a lot but nobody was raising this as an issue when Fincher was the rumored choice, and his movies look WAY more similar to each other than JJ's do.

Personally, I think SUPER 8 shows JJ is very capable of emulating an aesthetic while still making a modern film, so having him on Ep7 is one of our best shots of having a film that actually feels like the original trilogy. As long as he doesn't bring in Orci/Kurtzman/Lindelof to mess with the Arndt script I think we're in good hands.

Also, it is very important to remember that Abrams is a fan of Star Wars while he never really watched or cared about Star Trek. I think there is much more of a chance that he'll actually make a Star Wars film rather than a 'JJ Abrams' one......

They have done it a few times. Their first 'hit' borrowed heavily from Petra Haden's A cappella cover of Don't Stop Believin'. They added instruments which made it different enough to slip though. The Coulton thing is the most blatant rip-off, though. Keeping his name in their cover? Fucking morons.

EDIT: The 'Jonny C' line was omitted from the broadcast version of the show although that may have been the intention all along. The Youtube songs are usually extended versions.

Apparently, it was between Abrams and Ben Affleck, I think the latter would have been far more interesting to be honest.

Should the 911 calls have been faked? Recorded by actors? To me, that seems entirely inappropriate and disrespectful to the people who actually died on 9/11. Yes, this entire movie is actors re-creating events from recent history, but to fake the voices of innocent people who died in a national tragedy? That's crossing a line.

Is it really any different from films based on 9/11? United 93 or World Trade Centre for example are based on real events yet cast actors to recreate moments. Why is it any different here? They are all dramatisations of real events, so why not cast actors for that too?

I do see both arguments but I actually think it is a bit off using the soundbites for Zero Dark Thirty when they didn't really need to. They just do so to emotionally manipulate its viewers when they could have left them out completely and it the movie wouldn't have lost anything.  That is just my opinion of course.

However, this was at night and she took it as a pervy sexual thing and told me to fuck off and didn't speak to me for days. We made up, though, and still spoke about clothes after that, so....

That is an interesting question. If the spoiler is similar to the example you gave and

  Show
a character dies

it depends on how far they go with it. It can be annoying, sure, but nowhere near annoying as if they say

  Show
how the character dies but I'd still be expecting it.Then again, is that much different from watching an adaptation of a book where you know a character death is imminent?

My spoiler tags are of no film in particular but do relate to Allison's spoiler, so I tagged it anyway. I guess you're good if you've seen Donnie Drko big_smile

iirc wasn't there a big hoohar in the UK when the last Die Hard came out and people saw it was 15 rather than 18. The hoohar being from people thinking the rating reduction meant a lessening of the De Hard violence they craved. But rather than hurt the movie, it went on to make more than the previous ones. So going 15 (movie ratings wise) was the right way to go. Though, if it was still an R in America (I should google that) then maybe things weren't that simple.

I think the hoohar was more about the fact that Die Hard 4 was going to be PG-13 rather than R. Die Hard 3 was a 15 and the original has been re-rated to a 15 now too. Die Hard 5 has been rated R in the US and will no doubt be a 15 here uncut as the BBFC are more lenient these days than they were in, say, the 90s.

bullet3 wrote:

Die Hard 4 was not an R in America, and you could tell cause they really cut the crap out of the movie and it suffered for it and didn't feel enough like a Die Hard movie (the unrated dvd cut is better, but still weak, lots of added CGI blood, which is lame).

The PG-13 Die Hard 4 we got was the one they shot, it wasn't cut. The bad language and, as you mentioned, CG squib hits were added for the 'unrated' dvd. The majority of the swear words are actually ADR'd in and you can tell while some lines are alternatives but don't add much (the main one being the replacement to the 'I was out of bullets' line). It was done to appease the fans who moaned about the lower rating but it was always intended to be  PG-13 and was filmed as such.

johnpavlich wrote:

I argue that Die Hard 2 is a perfectly fine film and is only "bad" whenever it makes reference to itself as a sequel. .

Agree 100%. I really like Die Hard 2 but think it should lose the 'hey, we're a sequel, ok?' moments.

The thing I don't get is, if they needed it to make $50 million in the USA for them to get their sequel (which would have deatl with the corruption in the force and Dredd venturing into the Cursed Earth), and I know hindsight is 20-20, but why take a character who is pretty much unknown there and saddle the movie with the more expensive 3D ticket price and 18 certificate ? If they'd ditched the 3D and gone for a 15 (they have 15 in USA, right ?!) wouldn't that have widened their possible audience by being more enticing - no being asked to pay extra for the glasses to see something you know barely little about. Then they could have brought out an unrated version for the DVD/BlueRay market. (appeaseing all the 2000AD fans up in arms about the 15 certificate)

I get what you are saying but doesn't matter if it was a 15 or an 18, it would be rated R in the US anyway and I doubt it would be the same film if it was PG-13 (12a or sometimes 15, depends).  I agree they should have ditched the 3D or at least open it in more cinemas as a 2D film. My main problem was the fact that virtually nowhere was showing it in 2D in the UK, which hurt it a bit. This bloody nonsense that 3D makes everything better is getting old.

bullet3 wrote:

and after the PG-13 Stallone one

Nope, that was rated R too big_smile It's a misconception I have heard before, though and one I understand as there is hardly anything in it to make it an R.

Good point. I'm not sure if my sister has seen it yet, if not, I may watch it with her on dvd. She's a fan and has read the books so her reaction should be interesting. Plus, I assume scary CG baby won't be as scary on a small screen. big_smile

Yup, it was certainly released before. I remember that to be true a lot during the 90s, not really sure what it's like now. There are two tracks in Episode One's score that give it away, the one you mentioned and 'Qui-Gon's Noble End' before it.  The track for The Sixth Sense, and I'm saying this as the film is over a decade old and DIF have done a commentary on it is- Malcolm is Dead which let me guess the end as soon as the first scene ended. Huh.

Oh, yeah, titles of tracks on a movie's score can be a real bummer if the composer has named them things like "Johnny gets decapitated" or "It was just a dream after all".

Yeah, I was spoiled for The Phantom Menace the same way but not being a huge Star Wars fan, that didn't bother me as much. I would still rather not be spoiled at all, though. I try not to read track listings any more but I love soundtracks and have been known to listen to them before seeing the film.

1.A year or two. Give the film time to have been seen on dvd/blu but in forums, it is always safe to have a spoiler warning just to be safe.
1a. From what I can gather, I haven't seen This Is 40, the 'spoiler' they give is wrong anyway. *whistles*  I agree with Doc about TV spoilers, it is a lot harder to tell when it is ok to give them. I hear on other podcasts people giving spoiler warnings to, say The Wire, which has ended but not many people have seen it and  can still find it on repeats or on dvd.

Anyone else loving the fact that three of the five films in the animated category are stop-motion? I think it's awesome.

I am feeling ill today and I got City Slickers on Blu Ray in the post today so I watched that for the first time in years. I remember liking it back in the day but never had the desire to see it again but I really enjoyed it today. It was a fun film, a bit sugary towards the end, sure, but that is to be expected. I also listened to the commentary afterwards and that marked the first time I have ever listened to a Billy Crystal chat-track. Huh.
