It raises the question - how many disaster movies (where the enemy is nature) have there been where there's NOT a human villain as well.

Jurassic Park had Neumann and the whole smuggling sub-plot
Titanic had Ismay (fuck the icebergs Captain, crank the turbines up to 11)
Sunshine had some sun-overdosed slasher on the other ship

I haven't seen The Core, Dante's Peak, Volcano, Perfect Storm or 2012 - did they also have human villains shoe-horned in?

In the podcast, the movie's treatment of science/scientists was discussed.

Bill Paxton still does the 'tornado whispering' thing (in other words, use your gut/feelings/intuition) and the bad guys have up-to-date hardware and data. It reminded me of 'Luke, you switched off your targeting computer'

Also, did Cary Elwes  really deserve a steel girder through his head? For being ambitious? Okay, he cut some corners and borrowed another's ideas, but is that an executable offence?

If the fan knows less than you about some franchise, then they're not really a fan, have no taste, behind the times, not cool, just a civilian, noob, ignorant, etc.
If the fan knows more than you, then that fan lives in his mother's basement, can't pull a chick, trolls forums, has no life, etc.

Dan Maas did some spectacular animations for JPL for the MER rovers back in 2003. Instead of the crane, you got the bouncing on the surface.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tijyybrm … embedded#!

So the '7 minutes of terror' is not new PR. In any case, this Mars stuff should sell itself, without PR pushing our emotional buttons. Because in reality, it's 10 years of getting your PhD, 10 years of designing/building/testing the rover, and a 10 year mission, most of which is excruciatingly slow movements on Mars. And that's just the successful exciting missions.

Or... with a reinterpretation, it could be a happy story. 90 days to retirement... 50 days... 10...9....8.. 3..and there's so much more to do and to see and to enjoy...2...1... goodbye world....this is it... the end.....?.... hello? I'm still here... Hooray. Instead of 90 days, I've been given almost 2000 days!!

Just knocked this one over. Teague's normally the one eager to wrap things up, but, goddamn, they had to practically wrestle the microphone out of his hands. I could see the cane advancing from the curtains.

Talking about more appropriate casting choices, when this movie is inevitably remade in a few years, I nominate Chloe Grace Moretz (which would enable the script to go into darker places)

So which archress(?) would you most like to go on a date with: Hanna, Pevensie, Everdeen, or Hawkeye?

Just listened to this for the first time - in preparation for the upcoming IMAX re-release next month.

Great commentary guys - lots of fun.

Not to mention that it's possible to like films for just one aspect e.g. the FX, cinematography, score, acting, script, 1st Act, etc. Some people can appreciate the technical craft which recognizing that the narrative is lame.

The attack on Zion from Matrix Revolutions is an awesome FX sequence, but the movie itself is deeply flawed.

So not only is ranking movies subjective, but so is how you weight which aspect is important.

Therefore it makes slightly more sense to have a Top #250 for a specific aspect e.g. action scenes or finales or lighting or stunts or sequels, etc as then you're forcing everyone to adopt the similar criteria. But even so, everyone's list will be different.

Bit of a snobs list - dominated by old b/w inaccessible foreign films about existential angst

Heavens forbid there's any unnecessary excitement in those high-ranking works of art

Premium content - I like that idea. I would donate $50 towards a 'marathon', (defined as at least 3 x 2 hour movies or 2 x 3 hour movies, etc). Star Trek, Potter, Bond, Pirates, etc.

Also, there are still a few gaps in the big tentpole genre series to fill in (e.g. Transformers 3). And coming up in 2012 are some big ones to knock over: Prometheus, Avengers, TDKR, etc.

Or old genre classics (e.g. Total Recall 1990 - perhaps doubled with the 2012 version).  Or overlooked left-field movies e.g. Mr Nobody. Or TV episodes. Or shit movies for fun sneering e.g. AvP. Personally I'd like some historical epics be given the DiF treatment.

So there should be lots of Venn Diagram overlaps between DiF and  the forum, so that no one feels pressured commentating on or paying for stuff they're not interested in.

Just to put my cards on the table and some figures...

For individual movies, I would say $10 is a reasonable price. I'd pay $10 towards commentaries for King Kong 2005, Benjamin Button, Troy (Extended), Kingdom of Heaven (Extended), Gladiator, Alexander.

I'd pay $50 towards a 3 x King Kong treatment, Millennium Trilogy (extended), Pirates 2,3,4 and maybe even the Underworld series. There's probably many more options - I'd have to think about it if some business model became more concrete.

Does anyone else like the concept of original & remake as a double-feature?

Another idea... DiF could threaten to have an Adam Sandler marathon and forum members could pay NOT to have it.

I contributed to the LOTR marathon - I'd do the same for a Pirates of the Caribbean marathon or Potter marathon or Bond marathon. Or historical epics like Gladiator/Troy/Alexander/Kingdom of Heaven.
Or a marathon could be thematic e.g. all three King Kongs for a great compare & contrast.

Or alternatively, DiF could nominate what they'd do for $x. Crowdsourcing. Transformers 3 or Underworld movies might attract a higher price because they're more painful than something fun like Avengers or a Nolan film.  And it's up to us forum members to meet that target.

So there are two alternatives: push or pull. We the forum member push certain movies and DiF choose or DiF nominate and forum members choose.

Another idea...
What about auctioning off movies to commentate on? Forum members pledge $X for the movies they'd want to hear commentated and DiF choose which one they'll do and get the proceeds. Like a 'Telethon'.
How much would forum members be willing to cough up to hear Harry Potter or James Bond or the movies of Kubrick/Fincher/Ridley Scott be given the LOTR treatment?

All-time favourite TV series!
This will be interesting. Guerilla terrorists that go around blowing up government installations. I didn't think the US mindset liked this style of program, particularly since 9/11. The fashion is to portray events from the government/military POV (Star Trek), rather than the "freedom fighters / insurgents".
Perhaps the computer hacker (Avon) can have silver hair in honour of Julian Assange.  tongue

Very sad to hear.
Top Gun (released when I was in my late teens) still holds the record for the movie I've seen the most number of times in the cinema. And Crimson Tide was a brilliant tense taut thriller with rare intelligence from a Hollywood movie.

If the news media's dictum is 'don't let the facts get in the way of a good story', then Hollywood's dictum is 'don't let physics or common sense get in the way of what looks cool'

#1 Rule of costume/production/vehicle/ship design - it must look cool
#2 Rule - if it's also practical and obeys the laws of physics, that's a bonus

Look at The Matrix. The rules inside the Matrix were basically 'whatever looks cool' and could vary accordingly.

Which begs the evolutionary psychology question... 'why are some things cool and others not?' What makes something cool?

After 8 months flight-time, and 7 minutes of terror, come 2 weeks of boring checks. Hopefully we'll get some proper driving in the 3rd or 4th week. I was surprised to learn its rolling speed is the same as the MER Spirit and Opportunity rovers. So we won't get much more than 100M a day out of them.
The good news is that its RTG powersource can last for at least 14 years.

Wow - you noticed all that the first time in real time? Impressive. I'm struggling just to keep up with Nolan's fast-paced dense plot and Bane's vocalization. I suspect Nolan cuts like that so fanboys have to see it twice to get what's going on. Twice the box-office.

You should send the list to RLM - good fodder for a Plinkett commentary/analysis.
