Also first time using the youtube video. It's a small thing but it's nice not having to download the file to listen.

As an audience, we define what is super by what's beyond our own normal ability, and this galaxy is filled with superhuman stuff...

This is where our lines are being crossed.

The idea that they are superpowers only works in the context of a human based environment. And if you are coming at the movie from a purely audience based perspective then yes, pretty much everyone out there has superpowers. But I'm looking at it from an in-universe perspective. And kinda my whole point is the line from the incredibles: "If everyone's super, then no one is."

To any human being alive before 1940 let's say, the technology we have today would easily appear to be a "superpower". But I'm not likely to say that my ability to whip open this small little black rectangle in my pocket and find out any piece of information I could ever want to know, is a super power. It's just technology, it's just life.

So hence my point that almost no one we see actually has any superpowers. They have highly advanced technology that is foreign and way more advanced than anything we (as humans) have ever seen. But still, in the context of the environment they all live in, that's just normal. Whereas someone like Iron Man, who is using fairly advanced technology, could be considered super because he operates on earth, among humans, who are technologically far behind the rest of the universe. But if Iron Man ever decided to take a trip out to the universe, I'd kinda like to think he's be laughed off the street for something so primitive. (But...knowing Marvel... not likely to happen irl)

And the thing that set me off on this wasn't the fact that there's no way the Nova Corps guys could be more powerful without some long explanation or standing out, I'm merely reacting to the idea that this story is about a bunch of people with superpowers. Because's it's not, it's story about a bunch of people who could otherwise just blend into the background of this universe and no one would ever know they were there, getting wrapped up in this whole saving the universe thing because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time.

And to that, as I said in my last post, the fact that the Nova Corps AREN'T super overpowered despite the fact that the technology exists does speak something to their characters.

As for the arrow, it only ever moves when he's whistling, otherwise it just hangs in position. During the scene where he takes out the 25 guys or whatever after he crashes, he's whistling the entire time the arrow's in motion.

I think there's a difference between being a Superhero and a being with powers that are superhuman.

Yeah, but you're using humans as the baseline. Out in the galaxy that means dick all.

Notice no one is gaping or gawking at any of the stuff you mentioned, it's just a part of the daily life, it's as normal as that dude riding a bike down the street here on earth. Primarily it's all technology too, it should be mentioned (With the exception of the "Supers" I mentioned.) Arrow, tech. Nebula putting herself back together, Thanos's cybernetic upgrades. Peter flying around bareskinned in space with his helmet thing, tech. Rocket, tech. Out here they aren't super, they are just ordinary things that just exist. Nothing even worth noting, the only reason we would remark on them is because we're all dipshit humans that are so far behind the rest of the universe we think that stuff is amazing.

I don't know, maybe it's just a weird perspective thing.

And I wouldn't say the Nova Corps are powerless (As in superpowers), they're a military/government trying to keep order in the galaxy. Are they weak compared to what we see in the rest of the movie? Sure... but then what we see in the rest of the movie are superpowered evil guys and outlaw criminals using tech that would get them (And does get them) arrested basically on sight. They are technologically advanced, the ships/displays/culture/the Kyln they've created demonstrate that... although they are still just mortal people trying to do the best they can. And I think that's interesting.

Although that said, I do think the presentation of the Nova Corps was one of the weaker parts of the movie. They did seem to get lost in the wake of everything else going on and probably could have used a few more solid points of establishing to really cement it. But I was able to pick up on what their whole deal was fairly easily.

Again...all this coming from a guy who has never read and gives precisely zero shits about the comic and what they're "supposed" to be.

What?!? What debate? What devil's advocate? What ironic post?

You came into a thread for my work complained I was posting to many videos, insulted me and posted a video with no relevance to anything going on. All in indecipherable sentences.

So yes, then I'm sorry that I didn't see the grand hilarious humor of your masterful design that was cleverly disguised as general run of the mill douchebaggery. Well done. I would appreciate it if you'd keep your "humour" out of my thread from this point on.

And now I'm going to stop feeding what is very clearly nothing more than a troll.

At least in the context of this thread. You have complained that I post to many videos of my work (The entire point of this thread). Then when I called you out on it, said it was a pile of rubbish. Then told me to deal with it.

And then as far as as the last video was concerned, I can only assume you posted it in the wrong thread, since it's for Zarban's project, but you didn't move it, so I called it out and you assumed I was being mean...or something... I can only assume. Trying to decipher any semblance of sentence structure in your posts is a chore and a half itself.

It kinda sounds like a cross between the original Dolphin tank pilot idea from Star Trek and Moya.

Also, it's an alien galaxy where almost every character has some sort of superpower...

Wait, seriously? I would agrue without hesitation that the entire POINT (Well one of the major ones at least) is that the universe is not just filled with people with superpower's, quite literally the opposite actually.

Let me see if I can explain this with some sense of clarity...doubtful but here goes.

SPOILER Show

Let's pause for a moment for BDA's definition of a Super____: Someone with superpowers/someone who is a super hero/villain is someone who inherently stands out in the crowd they are in (Important distinction) because of thier powers/who they are. Tony Stark, super rich, famous dude with a badass weapon suit. Hulk, giant green dude. Thor, god like being from a species so advanced they basically live between dimensions, ditto for Loki. Hawkeye, most likely semi-mutant ridiculously good with a bow, super smart.  Cap, mutant human that's pretty much impossible to kill...really good with a discus for some reason. These people stand out and are Superhero's on earth because they are among humans, who are...well... pathetic. But in Asgard/the other dimensions (Frost giants etc etc) He's literally just a guy, not special, just another kinda famous guy with an important dad.

In every MCU movie up until this point we have been following Superhero's and Supervillains. People who are so above the rest of the population they are attempting to save/enslave that they become these god like figures. That's all we know. Up until this point, we've had earth, Asgard/other planes whatever they're called, and the floating rock place in the Thanos teaser. That's it. Until now, we could easily just assume the entire galaxy was just filled with these god like beings and us.

Now let's look at Gaurdians... we have... almost none of that. In fact I'd argue that there is only one...possibly 2, super anythings in Guardians. Ronan and Thanos. Peter is just some ass-hole petty thief raised by Ravagers, Gamora/Nebula are just some random girls Thanos picked up in the midst of slaughtering thier planets and turned into weapons, Rocket is a by product of mad science, Drax is just another criminal, and Groot...well he's just kinda along for the ride. This is a movie ABOUT nobodies, sure if they were on earth Peter could maybe be seen as a sort of Superhero, he has some pretty cool toys, but out here in the galaxy, he's just another dipshit. They all are. They are nothing special. Further, there's an entire Galaxy of no bodies out here just trying to live thier life, occasionally getting fucked over by these super's.

I was thinking about it today actually, and basically every single one of our core cast has been screwed over by a super. Gamora/Nebula, they were fine and happy until Thanos wanders in and kidnaps them. Drax, well family killed that whole thing yeah. Groot...well baby Groot Jr. kinda speaks for himself on that one. Rocket... kinda breaks the chain a bit. But Peter, Peter's actually kinda interesting cause technically he's screwed over by two different super's. Ronan obviously, boom, crash, I will destroy you all etc. But also, if we take the clues dropped, his dad (Peter's half human, holding the stone for longer than normal etc, Dad's a super.) kinda fucked him over royally. Hiring a bunch of Ravagers to bring him back after his mom died and then never really even bothering to check in when they don't show up for 26 years. Talk about an absent father. Which I mean, "Yeah alright, no shit Sherlock, the bad guy is bad what's your point?" Try doing this to any other MCU movie. I honestly can't think of another one where that's happened. Primarily, we must fight the bad guy because he's bnad, or he hurt me, let's go get my friends and we'll fight you. But I can't think of one where the entire core has been affected on an individual level like that by the bad guy. Which is frankly why I really like what they did with Thanos in this movie. We don't NEED to see him being evil...we see his effect on the universe, this dude has done and caused some serious shit, on literally a galactic scale. That's a guy you watch the fuck out for.

Anyways...weird tangent there.

Basically what I think I'm trying to get accross here is that this is the first MCU movie where our heroes aren't super's, they are just ordinary people amidst a sea of other ordinary people trying to live in this Galaxy. And they just happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and get drawn into it all. And that, too me at least, is way more interesting than just another movie about a bunch of people with super power's. And on top of that, it also expands our understanding of the universe that these guys are living in, from this point on, it's not just about earth, there are billions and billions of other people out here getting fucked over too. (I'm really hoping they do something more clever than "Now the Avengers save the GALAXY too by working together! Dun dun dun!!" But hopes aren't high on that one.)

That said, I know nothing about the comics or what the Nova is "supposed" to be, but the Nova Centurions sound like it could be pretty cool. But I also really like the idea of the Nova just being this army/police of normal people trying to maintain order in the galaxy, every once in a while getting destroyed by these "natural disasters" of Thanos showing up for a bit to fuck shit up.

Anyways...long, rambly, probably didn';t say much. That's a BDA post for yah.

Quoted from the chat for posterity.

"It was exactly and entirely everything I hoped it would be."

I LOVED this movie. Every single bit of it. It's exactly the sort of movie I've been pinning for for a very long while, and it delivered on every single front.

I'll do a longer write up when it's not 1 in the morning, but damn, that was beautiful.*

So here's a thing.

I've seen Boyhood twice now, and if you haven't seen it, there's a scene where the boy and his dad talk about whether or not they'll ever make another Star Wars movie. They filmed that scene in 2008, so it's funny in retrospect. But both times I saw it, I was the only one who reacted.

...do normal people even know that this movie is happening? I mean, it's been almost 2 years since the project was announced. We've been talking about them not needing to do a marketing campaign, but I actually think they're going to need to go all-out, for awareness if nothing else.

I think your overestimating the normal persons reaction to a throwaway line in a movie. Yes, we're likely to go "Hah, that's funny, cause they're doing a thing.", but that's cause this is a thing we actively care about.

I have yet to meet anyone, ANYONE, who doesn't, at least, know this is happening. Even my granpda knew about the new movie, and that's saying a damn lot.
