Satire?

Sorry, Teague, not quite sure I'm following you.  Of the two, I think The Princess Bride is a parody, rather than a satire, though it's true that the purpose of a parody is usually to satirize its object.  I guess that would then go back to the "can't have it both ways" problem.  Either you're holding up your subject to ridicule and scorn or you're not.    (Did that in any way address anything that you had in mind?)

Darth Praxus wrote:

I'd disagree about a parody having an inherent lack of concern for the characters. Look at the Hitchhiker's novel—yes, they're parodies of SF novels, but you genuinely care about Arthur and Ford and all the rest of them by the end. The same with Galaxy Quest and its crew members.

Yeah, that's an interesting point.  I hadn't really been thinking about the character issue.  I was thinking of the girl with the heart transplant insofar as it's part of the "airline in jeopardy" narrative.  And you're certainly right in the sense that we're supposed to care in Airplane! about Robert Hays and Julie Haggerty, and their relationship, otherwise the film doesn't work.

I guess then the problem with The Princess Bride is more specifically that it's trying to be such a broad parody of the fairy tale/adventure genre as such, and therefore the stuff that it chooses to hold up to ridicule is stuff which is absolutely fundamental to the story and the characters. ("True love", for example, is theoretically what's driving the whole narrative.)  So it couldn't possibly be trying to walk a line between being a parody and being sincere, because there's basically nothing meaningful left for the film to be sincere about.

You raise interesting points and while I don't agree with them, I see your point. It raises a question for me though, regarding the characters. And please bear in mind this is a thought experiment not an attack on you or your point smile

Goldman created "Princess Bride" as a "fairy tale with the boring parts cut out." So, the narrative through line of "true love" is not explained beyond "greatest thing in the world." So, if the boring stuff is cut out, and we don't see the relationship develop but are just told what is because the relationship stuff is "boring" should we not just accept Wesley's and Buttercup's relationship being in love?

Does this reflect on the movie, or more broadly, on fairy tale love stories in general (i.e. every Disney movie ever)? In other words, the fact that the romance in "The Princess Bride" doesn't work for some people indicate a flaw in the movie or in relationships like that across the genre?

Teague: master of the analogies smile

I really don't know what to think of Disney's move here. Since Lucas apparently had a draft written already, and then just handed it off as part of the whole deal, it might not be a big of a deal as people realize. Or, might be huge and bad and force them to rush a job. However, I highly doubt it. Disney, for all its other faults, understands the need to build a product, promote it and get it out. Hopefully, they learned something from John Carter and Tron: Legacy to allow them to see exactly what timing they need for what.

Naturally, there is always the potential that they will be overconfident in this product, trusting on brand recognition (Star Wars, Abrams, Disney) to push it through. I see that as a possibility as well.

As for merchandising, they promoted the stuffing out of Episode 1 even with little to no actually art or stills, so I wouldn't worry, holiday shoppers wink

Edit: Fixed my typo before Teague did wink

Episode 1 is still bad even if it isn't a star wars movie.

The one good thing about Episode 1 is that it prepared us for further disappointments when other classic franchises are resurrected. Crystal Skull. The Hobbit. Terminator Salvation. Predators. Prometheus. Pirates 4.

Now we KNOW that anything fantastic from the past that is dusted off and milked for more is virtually guaranteed to suck. We can all dial our expectations way down for Jurassic Park 4, Episode 7, etc.

*ahem*

It's called Jurassic World wink

As for Episode I, any time it comes up I will offer the opinion that it is a great sci-fi movie and a terrible Star Wars film and leave it at that.

Except that half its major problems have nothing to do with it being a Star Wars movie. For example, as the guys discussed at length on the commentary—the bad guys don't do anything bad. Also, awful dialogue, awful "comic relief", a twenty-minute racing sequence that kills the pacing, etc. etc.

I can honestly say that I agree with Vapes (probably did so on tf.n several times over the years).  I can recall, after seeing the film the first time, thinking "That was ok, but it wasn't really a Star Wars movie." I sat down, at the tender age of 13, and figured that if you took out things like R2 and 3Po, etc, that it would be a serviceable movie. Not a great film, or even a good film, but a manageable movie. Really, like an Asylum film.

I don't hate the prequels (though I have a low opinion of ROTS) but never struck me the same way the OT did. Instead, they just kind of exist as cool digital projects that really don't impact the way I view the OT.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go curl up with "http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Splinter_of_the_Mind%27s_Eye wink

This is one of the most cynical pieces of product I've ever seen, like you can practically imagine the computer algorithm that came up with the pitch. And being based on a comic doesn't excuse anything, everything is based on a comic these days, that's the fucking problem. Aaron Eckhart, you are better than this crap

I believe that has already been established.

I was going to say, the fact that is a comic book/ graphic novel adaptation did not excuse Spider-man, or Thor regarding how the film was put together. I'm withholding judgement, simply because I am not a huge Frankenstein fan. The story has been done and done again so this one just doesn't grab me but it might be worth a watch.

Can anyone remember when Teague mentions creating a T-shirt "I'm doing this ironically?"
Is that the Battleship Intermission? I might have to find that one.

Also, there is one from Phantom Menace where Dorkman describes Obi-Wan's role as "standing around and wait." The whole scene of Obi-Wan saying it was a trap and not to do that caused Teague to laugh hysterically.

Brian's Tucci impersonation from "The Core" should be considered.

Awwwwwww.  Soooooo cute!  Yeah, second children come quicker apparently.  (We made it to the hospital with a shade over 30 minutes to spare.)  You'll probably think you've forgotten how all this stuff works, but it all comes back to you!

A couple of advice reminders (in your case, since you've done this before) from the thread about Dave's recent child:

First, if you have any support while you're at home (parents who've come, friends who live near by) DO NOT HESITATE to exploit them to the fullest extent possible.  Your partner needs her rest, but so do you, and you both need to spend time with your baby.  Get people to cook for you, clean the house for you, go shopping, etc. etc.  ANYTHING they can do for you, tell them to do it.  Now is not the time to be humble and self-effacing.  That is what they are there for.

Second, you guys might have Neal's Yard [in Canada].  If so, score a tub of something they sell called "Baby Balm".  That stuff works miracles with diaper rash.  Their large tub will last you like six months at least.

Yeah, second baby's must come fast for normal people. Our second took nearly 18 hours to appear...

Anyway, congrats on the latest addition. Love the pics with the big sister smile
