This is awful, man. So sorry to hear this.
Bumping to add this.
I have to give props to SNL's digital short team here. They do a great job of taking a purely audio story and visualizing it in a way that seems authentic to what SERIAL would be if it had a video component. This is to say nothing of Cicily Strong's really spot on Sarah Koenig impersonation.
While I certainly understand Pastor's impulse here, I cannot agree with that method for my kids. They're either ready for all of it, or not. I tend to err on the side of a pinch too not ready for it. I tell the story of my Dad not showing me Vertigo until I had had the requisite life experience for it to resonate with me. I had seen much more violent or graphic material prior to that. It's a different line for each parent and each child, but I don't know that editing the material is sending the right message either.
Drew McWeeny wrote about his first r rated movie experience with his son, and I think it's a good point of reference.

Short answer: know your kid. Know what their limits are, what frightens them, makes them laugh, makes them cry. Most importantly, know WHY. My son watched MMA with me when I know its not going to be a bloody fight. He's not phased by that. Andy Serkis' voice in the new Star Wars trailer? TERRIFIED HIM. Hands over ears, eyes shut, "NO, NO DADDY!" So what does that (and my countless other observations) tell me? He's not afraid of the physical. He's not afraid of stuff happening to our bodies. But tone and mood can wreck him if I don't present it well. SO...I act accordingly. I show him stuff that's within his comfort zone, but up to the edge of it, with the goal of expanding it. Because that should be the goal of all us parents. Media is out there and younger an younger kids are getting bombarded by it and with an unprecedented amount of access to it. It's going to be out of my hands sooner than later. All I can do is not insult his intelligence, lead and occasionally push, and most importantly of all, digest and discuss everything we see together. I say, take them to Hobbit. TALK about beheadings and why in that scenario its ok. Drew McWeeny just showed DIE HARD to his kids, and his oldest accidentally let a "Yippe Kai Yay MOTHER FUCKER," before realizing what he said. Drew calmly responded, "Buddy we don't ever say that word. John McClaine is fighting terrorists, he has an excuse."
Whats the worst that happens? A discussion? We should be welcoming all that.
*shrugs* from episode 1 this is pretty much how I suspected it would end. That said, I'm sure this isn't the last time we've heard of Adnan's fate. As a slice of life of the process of investigation, I loved it. Then again, I'm one of those weirdos who doesn't mind unconventional endings.
Here's one I saw (extraordinarily illegally, I might add) after recording but it's already in my too 5 for the year. A Korean Documentary called, "MY LOVE, DONT CROSS THAT RIVER." Purely devastating.
A friend of mine produced it. I go on at length about it in an upcoming episode.
I've been public about it, but the Boogie Nights commentary is great. It's so casual, people are cooking, there's a baby somewhere, but in the middle of it all people are having a great conversation about the film. It fit for the ensemble nature of the film. Just a lot of fun.
I have an allergic eration to hearing my own voice, but in terms of WAYDM commentaries I've been on, I think the ones I can stand to listen to are Twilight, LOTR, Alien, and The Prestige. Of commentaries I wasn't on but I really dug, Raiders was great. Abyss was the very best of the man called Trey. There's a million I'm leaving out, but off the top of my head those are good ones.

HE'S GOING TO BOMB THE ORPHANAGE!!!!! WE DON'T HAVE MUCH TIME!!!!!!!!!
Short Term 12
I mentioned this on our end of 2013 show. I am in love with this movie. Brie Larson is a keeper, folks.
I think the fact the listenership is so large is sort of the theme of serial so far. It's easy to get wrapped up in the hysteria of the pursuit of a person's innocence or guilt, but the fact is trying to actually figure out the truth is hard, frustrating work.
I'm calling it now: the ending will be unsatisfactory to most of the listeners, and thus prove the whole concept: that the pursuit of truth is often unrewarding and bitterly dissatisfying, and yet we have to try anyway.
I'm absolutely addicted from EP 1. I'm calling it now though, I don't think for a second we're gonna get a conclusive answer to the mystery. I'm ok with that but I think the internet is going to shit in it's own mouth once the last episode drops.
I DESPERATELY want to see this.
It was the first movie I took my son to in a theater and what an awesome choice. It's really something special. Vastly superior to Frozen with great characters, a story that doesn't pander to kids, and carries an awesome pro-science message.
BLUE RUIN
Believe the hype. This thing is for fucking real and it doesn't give a shit about your blood pressure. It is possibly the most efficient thriller I've seen in quite sometime. Beyond that, it cleverly plays on the realism of a lot of suspense tropes while never being cute about it. In fact, there's nothing cute about the story or the way it's presented. It is weirdly beautiful and almost lyrical at times in how the main character glides from scene to scene. For my money, the Hitchcock comparisons are spot fucking on and I'm so goddamn close to making this my next curated movie.
WE ARE THE BEST
Pure joy. I missed this in it's limited run at Cinefamily, much to my horror. It's a real simple premise: two 13 year old girls in Stockholm want to form a punk band, mainly to piss off dudes they hate, and they do. Along the way they recruit a classically trained Christian guitarist and the three form a bond that anyone who was ever 13 and kinda hated the world could relate to. It moves really well and every performance is the right balance of chaotic and disciplined. I was really moved by it in the end, and can't recommend it enough. Currently on Netflix streaming.
I blame you all.
Here is the new trailer I cut all embedable like.
That's very kind of you and greatly appreciated. Even more than money, time is our most valuable resource, and you donated a good chunk of it. It's not unnoticed.
Jerry Lawler.
NEW TRAILER. NOW FOR PS4.
Here's my pod from the first week.
Some insight:
I start my week on a Tuesday, where at 8:30 I received a 15 minute string out with the basic structure from my story producer. By 2 pm that day, I had an 8 minute rough cut with music, brill, chyrons, and those TV mortises (which are important for reasons I'll get to later). Did a round of internal notes from the EP's, and showed it to them again by end of day. They gave me another round of notes to my cut (now 6 minutes in length) and I left for the day. By Wednesday at noon, I had addressed those notes and screened it for our exec at Bravo. After a round of notes, I screened it again at 7 pm, and after his final round of notes, shipped it off to Bravo in New York for final notes. Thursday I addressed net notes, did two more screenings and locked timid day. Then I did part of another segment and Friday we locked the entire show.
Per the rules of fair use, we cannot edit the show we feature. Everything must be in chronological order and we cannot full screen jump cut without showing a cutaway or the tv mortise. So to keep the story clear, while being funny and entertaining, it can be challenging.
Aaaand we're back! Tonight in the US on Bravo the season premiere of The peoples Couch.
I cut the amazing race segment.
WE ARE LIVE.
The pledge video was harder to put together than I thought. Many last minute notes that ran head first into some real life stuff. Still, I'm incredibly proud to be part of the team.
This is to say nothing of David, Mike's boyfriend, whom we've all gotten to know these past couple of months, and is facing this situation with as much fortitude as anyone could hope for.
