I don't buy into the notion that where you're born dictates who you are. A white guy born in Japan is still white. An Englishman born in Hong Kong is still English.

So what does make you of a particular nationality? Generational history and language fluency.

Don't get me started.... must stop... blood coming out of eyes...

I hate this movie. It's just as bad historically as Gladiator and Braveheart sure, but then it's a boring, incoherent, badly cast trainwreck of a movie with little to no redeeming entertainment qualities.

For christ's sake, there's a moment where two horses kick in the heavy wooden door to a fortified town... you know, those doors that are built to withstand battering rams?

I'm so not surprised you switched off - the opening is atrocious. From the badly written and pointless title card to the unexciting siege of Chalus (which shock fucking horror was actually where Richard was at this time...).

The moment when Richard yells "Kill the French" I knew we were in trouble... but by the end it's almost a parody. Imagine if Forrest Gump lectured Nixon about Watergate and shamed him into resigning - that's pretty much the absurdity of what Robin Hood does in this film.

And you're correct Matt - Richard spent about 6-9 months of his reign in England but thanks to the Victorians we English now laud Richard as one of our greatest national heroes. They've got a great statue of him in Westminster outside Parliament and it's hard not to be impressed.

She's just shy.

I couldn't tell you were Lanark is. I'd probably guess that it was in the lowlands somewhere. Ironically, my US geography is a lot better. I can name all 50 states of the US and can more or less place them on a map... but I can't do that at all for the counties of my own country. Hell... I don't even know were Suffolk is and it's in the same south-east corner of the country where I live.

We only bother to learn or remember things that interest us. I guess there's a perception of Americans just not being interested in other cultures and countries, so you all get criticised when the stereotype seems to fit.

And they'd be idiots. Same as those fools in Cornwall who want independence. There, it's like a thousand years from now Manhattan deciding they want to be Dutch...

Scotland and England first became united under a Scottish King in the early 17th century, followed by a formal act of union in the very early 18th century (under Queen Anne).  Often times there'll be this misconception that England conquered Scotland and brought her under her heel.

Scots have always held a surprising amount of influence over the union relative to their 'junior position' and were just as involved in all the activities of the Empire as the English. So this concept of hatred of the British being actually a hatred of the English is some pretty good PR work on the part of the Welsh and Scottish.

Scotland is more or less independent already and they don't want to have to go it alone without London supporting them. Scotland gets lots of benefits from being glued to England's hip.

And yeah, there's an unfair perception that Americans should know all about other countries when most people in those countries know jack shit about the US. Even among well educated families not everyone can name and locate every country on the planet - let alone be familiar with cities, towns, mountain ranges etc.

Definitely. Watching you guys record makes it seem less like four friends in my head and more 'just four friends'. And I like that.

I always thought it would have been an interesting dynamic to contrast Neo's invincibility inside the Matrix with his extreme vulnerability outside it. That's got to screw with anyone's head a bit.

Good commentary. I feel you covered all the flaws of the story and why it's not a 'great film'. I very much doubt that this will be on any of those greatest films list - and because of the very visual CGI nature of the film I think it will date very quickly.

Anyhow, I can't help but think that the very premise of the film is founded on rocky ground. If Pandora is so hostile to humans and is occupied by bothersome natives, and the human corporation are a bunch of shits, why did they not just glass the entire planet years ago?

Why does Skynet know Kyle Reese? The concept of Skynet somehow knowing that Kyle is Connor's father is an impossibility. The only people who know are Sarah and John, and there's no reason why they would announce this to anyone else, let alone make that information available to Skynet.

Has Skynet watched the movies as well?

Nice, but it goes on way too long and thus overplays its gag.

I have just very recently (two days ago) bought myself a Canon DSLR 550d and it's capable of brilliant things. It's just a great camera with an excellent film-like quality. My brother has one as well and these are the cameras we'll be using to shoot a short film later in the year (as well as the 48 Hour Film Project next month in London).

I'd definitely recommend one of the Canon DSLR models. Have a look through youtube and vimeo at all the tests and short films that have used the various DLSRs so you can see the results.

The Alien 3 scripts are all awful in their own way. The climax of one was straight out of the end of Akira, with an alien-style blob-monstrosity the size of a space station.

I remember reading an Indiana Jones script back in high school (10-15 years ago) which had him trying to find Noah's ark or something and there was Hitler's bones... And then another one, or the same one, which had the knights of the round table....Are either of these the Darabont script?

One script I'd love to read is the original Robin Hood - the one everyone loved that was rewritten and butchered by Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe.

Did you see the original theatrical release (now out on DVD) or the special edition re-release? Just curious.

The one out on DVD/Bluray so I assume the original theatrical release.

Also, I thought the film was way too long, so the idea of it being even longer doesn't bode well for pacing. The whole middle section with him learning how to be one of them just went on and on.

And on!

Further, it's a very predictable story. By making human Jake a cripple and having the human leaders be total shits, Cameron undercuts any tension in the story. The 'going native' turn is a foregone conclusion, there's no question that that is what's going to happen. And without an internal conflict, it's just not very interesting when it does happen. Remember all those undercover cop stories, where the policeman wrestles with divided loyalties  and the story is much more powerful? There's none of that here.

Finally saw this. I haven't listened to the commentary just yet but thought I'd put my initial reaction to the film itself.

An awful first half. I couldn't believe how bad some of the early dialogue was, and how clumsy and forced the exposition was as well. And that godawful narration....

That said, there are some very powerful moments in the film; lots of wow moments and crowning moments of awesome which I'm pretty sure is what made the film so successful. It's good manipulative entertainment.

And the world looks great, so great in fact that I wish Cameron had removed all the human elements from the story and created a sort of Apocalypto -like movie. Granted this would have changed the core story, but then that feels like a regurgitated Dances with Wolves anyway.

That said, my favourite 'human' bits were probably the video logs. A bit of wry humour in there and probably the best acting from Worthington.

Interesting... hadn't thought about that before. I can't remember what the nine rings for mortal men actually do (beyond corrupt their wearers and bend them to Sauron's will), but it does seem somewhat lax for everyone just to leave it lying around so that Bob the Gondorian or Harry the Rohirrim pick it up and start trouble.

What happens to the body in the books - does it evaporate or something?

It might have been economical, but it doesn't make any sense. Defeating Sauron the first time took the sacrifice of two of the greatest heroes, and it was only because he had the ring that he was able to stay tethered to Middle Earth (not unlike Voldermort, cough cough). In the movie, his defeat is a complete stroke of luck and he's killed because he's not wearing his ring anymore - which logically means that he could never take the ring off. Why?

So it's the Last Alliance and Sauron is blowing through the ranks with his megahammer. And yet when he has the King of Men completely on the ropes, instead of pounding him into a smooth and creamy man-paste then and there on the slopes of Mount Doom with said megahammer, he slowly reaches for him, Ring of Power-first, giving Isildur a clean shot at the only thing that could destroy him.

To be fair to Peter Jackson, Tolkien didn't give him much help here. The books only say that Isildur cut the ring from Sauron's hand, it never really goes into detail how.

But. Come on.

Actually, Tolkien does explain it somewhere - cannot remember where though. The story is that Elendil and Gil Galad, the leaders of the Last Alliance, battle Sauron in combat. They all die of their wounds and then Isildur comes up and cuts off Sauron's finger to get the ring (yup, from the corpse) as a trophy.

That's the books. In the movies, Sauron is attempting to grab Isildur in a chokehold to roast him. There's a deleted scene/concept where he does this to Gil Galad.

Of course, you have to find this information out on your own.

But you know, having the big monster grab the hero isn't a silly thing to do. He's overconfident and doesn't think a broken sword can hurt him. The problem is that for some reason PJ and Co thought it'd be a great idea if Sauron dies if he gets his ring finger cut off. Seriously? So what if he just takes his ring off for a moment, does he explode then as well? The effect is the same.

Meh, Batman's never been a character I've followed in the comics. I think I have just one series - Jim Lee's Hush. And that's mainly because at the time I liked Jim Lee's art.

But Batman is one of those characters who's seen a lot of action in other mediums - cartoons, TV series, films, and video games. And that's arguably what has made him the premier comic book hero in the minds of most people. I think he's more popular than anyone else, more than Superman, and more than Spider-man.

And that's why a commentary for any film in the series would be a good thing to do - you can approach the character from multiple angles. You'll have the comic book angle covered, the film angle covered, and the Adam West TV show covered too (ok, so Trey isn't that old).

And well done for moving the camera. Most shorts lock the camera off and use lots of unnecessary shots instead.
