Thank you, Dorkman, for posting these (again).

I know others get sick of debating, rehashing or fixing the prequels but I never tire of it.

Meanwhile, Star Trek Into Darkness is just a dumb movie that came out in the summer.  The problem is that it was actually trying to be smart.

And it actually seemed to believe it was smart, despite all the evidence to the contrary.

I think it is smarter than it is given credit for, but that is just me wink

Just listned to the Into Darkness one and I get where everyone was coming from and it helps to be able to enjoy the different perspectives.

First of all, the editing on this is excellent and flows very well, which all the episodes had, but this one feels very solid to me. So, good job smile

Secondly, it was nice to have a good mix of "old" and "new" fans, being able to catch references to original series, TNG, DS9 and Voyager. Though, Faldor really needs to watch some DS9 to get the Section 31 download. That is one of the reasons ID works so well for me. Section 31 is the darker aspects of the Federation, the Operative, working behind the scenes to preserve it at ANY costs.

Wish I could have been there, but it was a full room and you guys did great!

the studio said it was "too cerebral." In other words, they felt the audience couldn't connect with the characters.

According to Robert Justman they said that because they couldn't just say "We dont like that you cast your girlfriend as a stripper and neither does your wife!" (paraphrasing)

Clint Howard I believe still has the record for longest time between Trek appearances. He later played  crazy guy on Deep Space Nine's 'Past Tense'

The Corbomite Maneuver wasn't the first episode shown (RedXavier seems to be sticking to original broadcast order) but it was the first regular episode to be shot after the series was picked up

They also tried to get rid of Spock too, but Roddenberry managed to win out on that one. It was a fight with the studio pretty much from the get-go. There are a lot of stories that go back and forth regarding the history and we probably may never know the full history, though it is interesting.

Personally, I have always been a fan of the Menagerie as an episode as well as The Cage. It certainly has a different feel to it and Hunter's Pike is far more brooding than Shatner's Kirk. I think I identified more with Pike's introspective way, as I am that way myself.

Anyway, there certainly is a lot of variety on display in The Original Series  reflecting many of the different writers who contributed.

Regarding the Menagerie:
One of the reasons that Pike is played the way that he is is because it is actually a different actor in the chair than in the clips. Jeffery Hunter originally played Pike when the first pilot was done and the studio said it was "too cerebral." In other words, they felt the audience couldn't connect with the characters. So, we got "Where No man has gone before," though I believe Corbomite Maneuver either first aired or aired right after.

Yes, to go to Talos IV incurs the death penalty in the Federation, though, when you rewatch "Dagger of the Mind" keep in mind that it occurs in an insane asylum.

Yeah, that's what baffles me about how many modern conservatives bill themselves. "We don't think that the government has the right to interfere in your affairs! Unless you're a woman. Or gay. Or you disagree with us politically."

Actually, I've noticed that with many political movements, regardless of affiliation. It is very frustrating to me.

Oh, well. It doesn't actually affect me so I don't care

I dunno if I would label Melisandre as evil, but she is definitely dangerous.  And worse still, she's often right.   And if she's right, then where's the line to be drawn when it comes to her doing what needs to be done?

That's the thing! I agree that burning people at the stake is probably not the best way to go, but she is really the only one concerned with a) ending the war with minimum casualties and b) THE TERRIFYING ICE ZOMBIES.  I do sympathize with those who wish to see Edric Storm and Gendry and all of the other bastards who carry king's blood live, but it seems to be the price to pay for peace. It's use a smoke Terminator to kill Renly in his tent, or waste thousands of lives and valuable land trying to kill him on the field. And if a few sacrifices can hold off the Others, are they justifiable? Does saving one child you know justify letting thousands you don't die?

In the long run, I worry about the people that become devoted to the LOL in the way Queen Selyse and her men do. I think view Stannis as someone who doesn't view himself as Azor Ahai, but is choosing embrace that myth as a means to an end. That is, he'll stop all this fire nonsense once order is restored. But if Selyse still has power during peace time, will we see more "heretics" being burned?

That is an interesting theme to explore and one that has been seen in fantasy before (read Sanderson's Mistborn, and even Denothor in LOTR to an extent). Once you have the power, do you allow it to end once you have accomplished your goal, ie Ice Zombies. Or, since you have played the role for so long, do you continue it to maintain your power base?

And I'm surprised...?

No, actually not. Like I said before, I just prefer to have all the information. I usually don't discuss politics on the Internet because a) I sometimes come across as a dick and b) it isn't actually a discussion. Discussion implies an exchange of ideas and a debate about the merit of those ideas.

Politics is not that way any more. Last week in Texas, the Supreme Court rulings, and other things that show that discussion and dissent are not allowed. Only proselytizing.

However, am I the only one who thinks the set of Laketown looks like Signapore from Pirates of the Caribbean?
Seriously, are there going to be pirates in this movie?

It reminded quite a bit of Red Dawn. It's a murder fantasy with all the moral ambiguity wrung out of it* for our hapless heroes but with still enough Lord of the Flies bite to make it interesting social satire about high school.

* The only real fault with the film is how the opening claims that the youth is out of control, but we see only one character act out violently before the students are shipped off.

The rest were shipped off due to preordering Grand Theft Auto V and its clear association with high school violence wink
