Mike's family and boyfriend are fucking champions, by the way.

I'm glad you mentioned that.  The big takeaway from me that evening, outside of actually seeing Mike, was seeing Mike's dad.  He was obviously in shock, obviously torn apart inside, but he had such dignity to him and was so appreciative of us being there.  The strength of that man is almost incomprehensible.

As I mentioned on twitter, my son Ryker was born on Friday.  After I left the hospital and saw Mike that first night, I came home and instinctually my wife knew how shook up I was, and without saying a word, put my son in my arms.  It was absolutely what I needed, and I just wept.  I wept because I thought of Mike's Dad, and how unnatural and fucking horrid it is to contemplate the notion that you will outlive your child.  I thought of how absolutely in love with both my sons I am, even the one I just met four days prior.  Four days, and the thought of anything happening to him..I can't even type it.  Mike is a grown man, and an outstanding one at that (obviously, which is why we're all here), and if my boys grow into half the man that he is, it'll be a flawless victory of parenting.  So for Mike Sr. to be there that night, processing it with the rest of us, and still be on his feet and to be as gracious and kind to us as he was, is the kind of miracle that doesn't get celebrated enough.

So yeah, the fact that Mike has been clawing and scratching his way this far in such a short period of time is extraordinary, but not surprising.  It's not surprising because we see that strength from his father, mother, brother, and sister.  I have no way of knowing if I'm that strong, but they inspire inspire strength in me, and I think I can safely say, all of us.

I dunno about my chest, but if others are in for a mass bro-tat in support of Mike, I'm down.

Why is no one mentioning the Trey Dick song?  That had me howling in the car.

They were flex funding, so they were going to get whatever it raised, but it's always nice hitting your goal.

CONGRATS to Kulap and the rest of her team for successfully funding their Inidegogo campaign!  We will be checking in with her periodically for updates.

My gigs are a mixed bag, but I too have plenty that I'm proud of.   I can also earnestly say that I'm always more interested to ask what my fellow FIYH'ers are working on because I recognize VFX is a skill I am never going to have, and am always fascinated by it.  To me, the advantage of having these dudes as my friends is that there's such a diversity of experiences that I don't see it as mere conversation filler as much as its me genuinely curious.

That said, I grind my teeth when someone says, "Oh. you're an editor!  So you have to like, watch ALL the footage?" or "Oh you're an editor!  So, you like, add music to it and stuff."

For what it's worth, an Assistant Editor does not rub shoulders or backs.  They primarily handle all media management, project setup and maintenance, ingesting footage, outputting cuts, trouble shoot all technical issues, and occasioanlly pull shots or create selects per the editor's instruction.  I always try to give my AE's an opportunity to cut a scene, on their own time after their daily duties are handled.

MY full list all annotated and what not.

StartUp: Alex Bloomberg is a podcast producer most known for his work on This American Life and Planet Money.  He's on his own now, with an idea to start a new business of a podcast network.  This podcast is essentially his making of, as he chronicles the many, many, MANY pitfalls he encounters.  It's brutallly honest and Alex never once pulls a punch on himself.  It's so cringeworthy at times, it's almost LOUIS like.  Als, he utilizes this same approach for his first, and so far only, show sponsor.  Great fun, and an interesting snapshot of what owning a business in the 21st century is like.

Who Charted?:  Teague and I got to go to Earwolf studios (where they record CBB!, HDTGM, and Sklarboro Country) to interview Kulap about her film.  This is her podcast where she and her cohost interview people, using that weeks top 5 charts (in music, movies, whatever) as a framework to chat with folks.  It's a mixed bag sometimes, but when it works, it works well.

The Q&A with Jeff Goldsmith:  Y'all seem to know this one.

Scriptnotes: Same as above.

Nerdist Writers Panel: Samsies.  Worth it just for the episode they did on Nielson.

Born Yesterday: Love this one.  Possibly more than Hardcore History.  Joey Brunelle examines little, quirky, oft forgotten tales from history and presents it with the right amount of snark.

How Did This Get Made: Favorite episode is EASILY No Holds Barred.

KCRW's Good Food  KCRW is the Los Angeles NPR station and they have a ton of great shows that they convert into podcast form.  This is a food centric show hosted by Evan Kleinman that covers everything in the culinary world.  They've been on a roll lately, with some fascinating stories on Roy Choi, Ben Ford (Chef son of Harrison), and a whole episode about awesome food centric Kickstarter campaigns.

Welcome to Night Vale: I got into it about 6 months ago and am almost fully caught up.  Cosplayer Holly Conrad has been on a huge Night Vale cosplay kick lately, playing both Fem Cecil, and the mysterious Glow Cloud.

Hardcore History:  Dan finally uploaded his most recent WWI episode and it's a doozy.  Great stuff here.

The Moth: If you don't know, you should.  Hourlong storytelling cast.  Always uneven but when something's good, it sticks.

This American Life: Duh.

Broken Projector Podcast: Friend of the show Geoff LaTullippe and Scott M Begs from Film School Rejects do an awesome Film/TV Industry podcast and always have unique guests on.  If you want to be a writer, I recommend this one.

The Treatment: Elvis Mitchell interview show, about the world of Film and TV.  I've actually been trying to model my interview style somewhat after his.

The Business: Film TV Industry weekly news show from KCRW.  Darby Maloney is a great host and it's a tight half hour.

Total Human Optimization: If you follow me on Twitter or Facebook, you know I'm a huge fan of ONNIT, an alt fitness/supplement company that's all about lifestyle that leads to health and balance over meathead bro-lifting.  THeir podcast has some big names in the fitness/nutrition world, and they do a good job of avoiding being a total shill for their products.

WTF: We all know this one, right?

The Art of Wrestling, with Colt Cabana: Colt Cabana is an indie wrestler and each week he has someone on from that world.  Some fascinating stories here.  It's often compared to the WTF of Pro Wrestling (and Maron has actually had Cabana on) and even if you're not into Wrestling, the stories are usually pretty compelling on their own.

Friends in Your Head: You probably haven't heard of it.s

Wow, Owen.  That's awesome.  I had forgotten about our little interview, but I really feel like you captured a great perspective on this.  For my part, I'm honored to be mentioned alongside those folks.

There's a great passage in one of the books where Stannis basically comes out and says, look I don't WANT to be king at all, but by every law in the book, I'm supposed to be king.  I don't wanna do it, but without the law we have nothing and so I'm just doing my part.  He's not wrong, of course.  The book also has a great analogy of the three Baratheon boys where someone is comparing them to different metals.  Renly is described as Copper, shiny to look at and pliant to the people, but not strong enough for real combat.  Stannis is described as Iron, rigid, inflexible, and ultimately brittle because of it.  Robert is described as the true alloy, the steel that neither of the others were.  He had charisma and was loved by the people, but he was also tough as shit and could fight for the crown.  Robert was an awful King, but its hinted heavily that he was probably the best possibility of the three in the long run.

I just rewatched Short Term 12 the other night, and I think the fact that UPSTREAM COLOR, SHORT TERM 12, HER, and THE ACT OF KILLING came out in 1 year is kind of staggering.  It's such a quiet, effortless, miracle of a story.  Brie Larson does fantastic work and the tone is just right.  If you haven't seen it, please do so.  I honestly done know if my next curated film will be this or The Pawnbroker.

Sometimes, and for some kids, doing everything you can to keep your head above water means being still.  I don't want to get to personal here, but there was a lot of chaos in my life growing up involving my older brothers.  There were....bad decisions mae by many of them and it caused a lot of grief.  One way I coped was  by being just sort of...half there?  I guess that's the only way I can put it.  Just non committal towards every experience as a way to numb yourself down so you a) don't cause any bullshit yourself and b) don't get invested in anything that can be ripped asunder by the surrounding chaos.

There's a reason this movie starts with them moving.

Kulap and I met literally 5 minutes before the interview.  We had exchanged a couple of emails, and that was it.

You can find the Indiegogo page for Kulap's film here:  https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/orig … ocumentary

This worked really well for me.  It's impossible to separate it from my own experiences, because as a kid that moved every school year, I fully identified with the creeping tension of isolation that puberty makes out of us.  Mason IS along for a ride in his own life and he's doing everything he can to keep his head above water.  Inaction, indecisiveness....people don't realize these are defense mechanisms, not a dearth of personality.  The ending is where these points become fully realized.  Boyhood ends once you feel both the weight and the weightlessness of making your own choices for once.  It's a hell of a movie.

No.  Not Craigslist, no.  Staffmeup.com production beast.com, mandy.com, even entertainmentcareers.net.  But fucking NOT craigslist.

I've seen a ton of gameplay footage.  No weapons or combat of any kind.

I'll be doing about 4 videos for them over the course of the campaign.

So this isn't my creation per se, but I am helping with the Kickstarter campaign for this truly unique Indie Game.  My old buddy Joe Fielder was one of the story leads on Bioshock and Bioshock: Infinite.  After Irrational Games closed, him and a few other of the designers of those games pooled their resources and formed Day For Night Games, dedicated to the brand of weird and unique game experiences that was the trademark of the Bioshock series.  Their first project out the gate is, The Black Glove, which you can now read about here.

I'm finishing the Kickstarter campaign videos, and they promise something really unique.  I'll update this with more the proper info once the campaign begins.
