And it turns out I misremembered in my earlier post - Studio 60 actually DID get a "back nine" order and ran for 22 episodes.    But it was already in trouble when the back nine was (grudgingly) ordered, and by the time they finished production they knew it was over.  So Studio 60 does end with a solid wrap-up of most of the major storylines.

Studio 60 has the WEIRDEST back nine in TV history. Sorkin completely changed his conception of what the show was and kind of went to the mansion with it. Not that I don't love that entire show, but I think they should have either given him a second season or just aired the thirteen.

My completely-unscientific guess right now is - Terra Nova gets a second season.   Everybody involved seemed to think they'd made the Greatest Show Evar - until the debut ratings came back and they realized they'd just shit themselves in public.  It's in everyone's interest to keep it on the air - if for no other reason than as a face-saving gesture all around.

Fuck, Trey, I was winding up to completely disagree with your post, and then you turn around in the final paragraph and say exactly what I was going to say. Yeah, TN will probably get a second season. If it completely Dollhouses the second season, they'll be gone, but it's possible they can Grow The Beard and actually turn it into a good (and hit) show.

Not to say I'm not really, really enjoying it right now. But I can see why a geek audience would have problems with it, and a wide audience would have problems with it. But it's fun, and I'm willing to give it a chance to find its sea legs. Not every show can hit the jackpot right away (LOST, Battlestar being the only exceptions I can think of—and ask Brian what he thinks of the end of THOSE shows).

I feel like I'm going to totally disagree with Trey when I listen to this. I *loved* the pilot.

I've felt the show be a little shakey in the first few episodes, as all shows except LOST and Twin Peaks are, but it's REALLY picked up now, especially as Elizabeth's old flame has joined the cast. It's *not* about dinosaurs attacking every week. It's about human drama and starting a new civilization.

It is, sure, basically the original concept for LOST, before they brought in JJ Abrams and Damon Lindelof and made it a sci-fi mystery, but, then, I kinda have always wanted to see that show.

And then they fucked it all up and turned it into Little Ship Fights The Borg: The TV Show. Fuck the borg.

Actually, if you go back and watch the show again, there are WAY fewer Borg episodes than you think there were. Voyager really was, for the LARGE majority, exactly the show you described earlier.

Tell that to the Coen Brothers.

Or Stephen Soderbergh.

It's because, as originally designed, the saucer impulse engines are only activated when the saucer is separated, which holds throughout TNG and the use of the practical model. It's not until the CGI model in DS9 that the saucer engines are consistently lit up.

Or we could just be a MASSIVE nerd about it.

That works too.

Teague, it's 'your MOM's standard'. How'd you miss that?

Brief nerd moment-um, am I the only one who noticed that the impulse engines on the saucer section were not lit up?    wink

Why would you need to be powering the impulse engines? You're about to go to warp, just let the ship 'coast' until the warp engines kick in. Messing with acceleration is just going to make the calculations harder.

Yeah, this is one of those opinions Teague has in spite of and possibly because of mounting evidence to the contrary.

This is the great thing about a Mac Mini. Any time I want to play something I downloaded, I just plug the HDMI from it into the TV and go. Otherwise my PS3 handles all my Blu-ray/Netflix/Hulu/gaming needs. I don't know what use I'd have for an Apple TV.

Does this track the price of pieces of art during their life, or posthumously?

Because the first shows when they were 'successful', whereas the second might better show real artistic merit.

Let me stop you right there. Film school?

Film school.

Show of hands, guys, of who thinks film school actually helps anyone make money.

Is it just me, or was this guy not really saying 'story doesn't matter and this is awesome', but just 'it turns out you make a lot more money if you focus on spectaculars, since that's what gets people into the theater when it matters'?

I have a hard time telling a money guy who knows how to make money that he's wrong about how to make money. After all, Alice WAS a crap movie and it DID make over a billion dollars. Could it have made more if it was a better-told story? Perhaps, perhaps not. Perhaps something other than the story mattered here, and if Alice had been given to a production team who cared about making a good story, they wouldn't've made a movie that people wanted to go see.

I really should not say here on the site how many hours I've previously lost to Miss April O'Neil thanks to Eddie here linking to her once upon a time.

Hey, if you've got a solid thematic reason to do it, knock yourself out. But if you realize your script (or rough cut) is just too damn slow at the outset so you lop off the first half of your climax and throw it up front, then that's lazy. If you're gonna do it, have a good reason for it.

I'm sorry, I just watched too many episodes of Battlestar Galactica that tried to cover their poor plotting by throwing their cheap cliffhanger in the teaser to have much patience for this gag anymore.

I was going to hop in here and reference BSG but here you are doing it already.

Yeah.

I hate it.

'FlashForward' also did it a lot and made me want to stab a bitch every time.

EDIT: Finished the commentary. Good stuff. As for JP4…do you guys realize that there were 8 years between JP and JP3, and now 10 years since JP3? That's messed up.
