Yeah, I was wondering when the Teague movie had come out.
I didn't get a chance to see to many films so I'll just post my quick list:
Star Trek Beyond This was a fun film, and thoroughly enjoyable as far as lots of nod to Star Trek, and some decent character moments. Made me laugh, almost made me cry, and was generally an OK story. The characters were fun and interesting, and Jaylah is definitely a good addition.
Captain America: Civil War This film left me mixed. It opened great but then it just cascaded in to a very weak story and motivation that honestly left me more confused by the end than anything. I would call it a bad film, except it didn't really end in a way that made any sense as a film. So, I guess "meh" but I don't know. It confused me to no end.
Nope, I'm not crying. It's just dusty in this thread, ok.
Mike, glad you made it here. We're a crazy group but you'll find that most of us have hearts of gold. I'm Erich, resident counselor-in-training, and one of those conservatives in the wild you might have heard about. Hopefully you can educate us more about movies.
Ok, I'm on a weird kick, and there's no getting around it. I want to share the madness and see what others have enjoyed.
Mashups are fun mixes that I have discovered a profound enjoyment of. For this thread, they can include music, properties, graphic arts, and films. Given the nature of this board, films might end up winning out. So, here are my quick list of fun stuff:
Game of Thrones/Legend of Zelda
The music is what makes this one. Built from the two themes of a Zelda game and Game of Thrones, the similarity is eerily beautiful.
Halo and Star Trek Into Darkness
Using the audio from a Star Trek Into Darkness trailer and the cut scenes from Halo, it makes for an interesting mix.
Stumbled upon this while looking at different scifi armor concepts.
For those unfamiliar, the first shot is a Republic Commando from the Star Wars video game of the same name. The third shot is Master Chief from the Halo series, and the middles is a costume blending of the two.
That's all for today folks Share your favorite mash-ups here.
Most of you know that I'm a defender of Abrams Trek films, despite all their downsides and arguments against them. Call it a soft spot of mine.
That said, I would honestly encourage those who have been put off by ST 09 and Into Darkness for their negatives and give Star Trek Beyond a try. It has a much more reflective tone, and builds to the action. There is comedy woven in and out, while crafting the story and the characters have very enjoyable banter.
I know the buzz from the trailers was mixed, but I was not prepared for how the film actually came together. It was funny, smart, and had a great adventure vibe that I really enjoyed. I'd post to the trailers, but they just don't do it justice.
I was merely uninterested in Suicide Squad until Leto's antics drove me to an active antipathy toward it. (Plus if this one underperforms, it's another handful of dirt over the DCCU, which is only a good thing.)
Pretty much this as well for me. I didn't understand the hype and Leto's Joker seemed thoroughly uninspired. Then I read some BTS stuff and that pretty much ended any possible interest.
I'd pay to see the solo Wonder Woman movie, with its classical Greek setting. But not interested in Avengers III or Thor IV or Iron Man V or Justice League - The Second Punching or whatever they're up to. It's all just WWE anyhow. How many more years can this trend last?
Bring on Dune or the Silmarillion or Blakes' 7 or a hard-R Star Wars spin-off.
Dare I mention Transformers?
Not that I don't wish for any of the things you listed but, unfortunately, I see super hero movies everywhere.
Am I the only one not interested in Suicide Squad?
If you haven't seen Red, please go see it. It's Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman and John Malkovich as retired CIA. Still not interested? Well, take a peak at this brief scene where Willis saves a lady friend of his from being kidnapped and then gets in a car accident against Karl Urban.
Corky Romano Don't watch this movie, In fact, just don't even acknowledge this movie, except for this scene, when undercover mob black sheep Corky ends up with a bag of FBI evidence cocaine and then is asked to give a speech to school children. The rest of the movie is just awful comedy, but this scene makes me laugh.
For me, it is something like Game of Thrones. I can enjoy fantasy just fine, especially LOTR or even Sword of Truth, but Game of Thrones feels deliberately mean. I feel like there are no characters that are worth investing in, or that the good stuff will be drowned out by the gallons of death.
We've had Teague on quite a few times before. Dorkman was in the first anniversary. Eddie and Ryan were first timers, but are more than welcome to hop on every now and then
I have recently revisited some WAYDM commentaries, especially Transformers and Spider-man 3, and one thing that stood out to me was that there were several good scenes in otherwise terrible movies. This thread is to share scenes that fall in to two categories: -Scenes that are really good but from terrible movies or -Scenes from good movies but stand out for some reason.
I'll share some quick examples that have floated around my mind and to illustrate what I mean.
Opening of "Daredevil" series:
For those unfamiliar, Netflix has created an original series about Daredevil and is quite good, but one scene has always stood out to me. That scene is the opening fight choreography, in which we discover what kind of people Daredevil is fighting against. It also illustrates his powers without explicitly showing them. While the series is well done, this scene stands out as a quick introduction to Daredevil.
Desolation of Smaug: Legolas vs. Bolg I will be among the first to admit that the Hobbit films are a mixed bag, with most of it being considered bad, if not absolutely awful. So, this might surprise some of you, because Legolas largely serves no function in the film and yet this fight scene still stands out:
One of the main reasons the scene stands out is the music goes from very epic strings to nothing. The sound work in this is amazing because each blow feels accented in a way that makes it more harsh to me. The scene is incredibly short, and ends with some abysmal CGI, so it's easy to forget. But, the choreography stands out in a very powerful, raw, way.
Star Trek (2009): Opening Scene Those who know me, know that I am big supporter of Abrams Star Trek, despite its flaws. But, less my above two examples make you think that all I care about is action scenes, I want to point to this next scene:
While there is action in this scene, it isn't that part that stands out. Captain Robau faces down certain death with all the cool demeanor of a man at a poker table. Similarly, George Kirk makes a personal decision to sacrifice his life for the sake of wife and child. It makes me cry ever time, and while the rest of the movie hit and miss, this scene has an amazing emotional punch to it.
That's a quick set. I'll add others, but feel free to discuss, dissect, disagree and add your own.
The funny thing is. On the Trek board I frequent the second trailer is being praised as the one that makes them want to go see the film and feel like its more "Star Trek" (whatever that means).
*sighs*
I don't know what to think about this trailer, other than, "It's a trailer."
Also, I hope they don't waist Elba under that make up.
The bugs from Starship Troopers did nothing wrong. Buenos Aires was inside job set up by the Federation to justify going to war with the bugs, there's no way they could've launched an asteroid from the other side of the galaxy to hit such a precise target - they didn't have the technology and it would've been picked up by Federation satellites and defense outposts long before it actually collided with Earth. The bugs didn't initiate any sort of attack and were only defending their home turf when the humans showed up.
