Oh, and the movie. That happened too

I'm likely to raise my ire if I go any further, and I'm really trying to avoid working myself up these days. Suffice it to say, I consider AOTC to be 'Transformers bad'. Almost everything in it rubs me the wrong way, more so for the 'detective' subplot than the ultimately harmless love story part.
Well, like I said, I never thought it was a good movie. I'm with Trey when he says that it isn't the worst of the prequels. It's just a fun movie for me
But, I'll not argue with you about it, for sake of your blood pressure
Just going to leave this here:
http://www.cracked.com/quick-fixes/4-wa … imploding/
Also, Rufus Sewell as the next Doctor-yes? No?
Brad Pitt: Shut up and give me money!
In the new forum I think we'd be building whole new roads...
You use concrete for that, don't you?
Don't lie to me, Sim City!
Filling in plot holes with ideas, events, or other elements not present in the film itself.
So, what we would be doing on the new board...
Name idea, maybe?
So, I just finished up the ROTS commentary and Ryan said some things regarding TPM that I feel the same way about ATOC and I think it helps clarify at least my feelings.
First of all, I get that people hate these movies and it is fun to mock them, rip them to shreds and basically eviscerate them
I have a lot of fun hearing the cries of the fan boys as well as the potential that was wasted in these films. Simply put, it was a lot of possibility and it was lost. I get that, I really do. But, like Ryan said about TPM, I can kind of divorce AOTC from the PT and the PT from the OT. Its like the Old Republic video games. Those are really cool and amazing and take place in the same galaxy far far away, but its kind of separate from the movies.
Same thing here, for me. AOTC really is kind of an odd duck to me, in that, as the middle act, it is setting up for ROTS and the Clone Wars. But, it does so in a fun way, that really is why I enjoy it. I don't need TPM or ROTS in order to enjoy AOTC. It has an interesting story, with a good hook at the beginning. Like Bathilda said, Obi-Wan has the detective plot, and a very much a building up on it self, where it's an assassination, no it's a secret army, no it's war.
It has some of my favorite Star Wars scenes in it. The final battle between the Clone Army and the Droid Army, Obi-Wan and Jango fight and chase scene and the Arena are all fun and interesting moments. Sam Jackson has his one moment of almost being Sam Jackson.
In addition, I get a sense of what George was trying to do because he doesn't regard the OT as "completed or finished." I get the sense that he was always frustrated by lack of resources, lack of time, lack of what-have-you. When I first watched the Behind the Scenes of the Special Editions, he talked about that and how he always (maybe) wanted to go back and do to it what he envisioned.
I think one of the commentators noted that George isn't happy with the Empire, the one fans loved, and really wants to show the audience his vision. We know that it was the fact that there were so many limitations that made the OT the success that it was and is now.
The PT is that experiment to do what he always wanted to do. Unfortunately, it loses itself in those details. It becomes a pale imitation of George's past success. It lacks the limits of the OT and loses its punch. Again, missed opportunities and I get that. But, I see what George is trying to do and while I think he was wrong to try the PT, I don't begrude him for wanting to try. (Heck, if I could go back and remake my first fan film, I would in a heart beat).
No, this isn't a perfect movie or even a good movie. It is a fun movie, it feels closer to Star Wars than TPM or ROTS ever did (to me) and its one that I can watch and have fun with, then mock later.
Speaking of mocking, let it begin...
Hasn't Superman always had a problem with his personality? I mean, I get that he has an identity crisis, but he also is so far removed from humans that he is supposed to be saving that he is nearly god like?
I like the idea of exploring movies out there that haven't been commented on or are too old to feel like we need to comment on.
Personally, there are several movies that inside my tastes, but not necessarily interesting enough to all the others out there to warrant a commentary. This might be a good way to explore more aspects of film world, without feeling like it HAS to be a commentary.

.....Get away from the Jesus analogy.....
?! You said that but then that!
Making him at least THINK of saying "fuck it all" in my opinion IS getting away from the Jesus analogy!
Last Temptation of Superman? O_o
If there was any prequel movie that could be fan-edited into being decent, it would be this one. Just cut out every non-action scene with Anakin, follow Obi-Wan the whole movie, and you have a fun space action movie
Yep. This is exactly what I mean
So, I'll not comment on the movie fix until I've seen the movie...
but, I have just been informed by the Legal Department that while Jake Lloyd's provisional status of expert was revoked on [redacted] it has been considered for reinstatement by Friends in your Head [citation needed]
And check out our new rewards! At the $5.00 level you get a picture of Teague poking a monkey with a spatula except it's not a spatula or a monkey or even legal probably.
Yeah, next we'll need a Kickstarter for their legal fees.
While I would NEVER go that far, I will say that of the prequels, Attack of the Clones is the most close to being watchable and enjoyable for me. This is especially weird, because it's also simultaneously one of the worst, certainly visually (goddamn does that early digital cinematography look like ass). The thing is, if you're able to survive the torture-fest that is the 2nd act, I think the last hour is the best continuous chunk of action-adventure from any of the prequels. Phantom Menace I find completely unwatchable, full-stop. ROTS opens strong but gets progressively more terrible, and does the thing I HATE where it will start a cool action sequence and then cut away from it 30 seconds later to some boring political shit only to cut back into it like 20 minutes later when you've already lost all the momentum. The end of AOTC stays in one location, and just builds and builds as it gets crazier and more large scale, and follows the same set of characters throughout all the action. It hews closest to the space adventure kick that I want from that kind of movie. If that section is on cable, I'll usually sit through it cause it's genuinely fun.
I think that is my part too. ATOC is good fun, for the most part, especially if you watch it the way I do: skip the romance plot
I use to defend the romance because I kind of understood what George was going for but realizing now that it was unsuccessful (or even good) I just follow Obi-Wan.
However, I understand the pain people have due to the prequels, because it really is poorly done in terms of story (what there is of it) but it feels more like a Star Wars movie to me. Phantom Menace really didn't for me and ROTS just leaves me depressed and angry. I recall walking out of the midnight showing aching to watch Star Wars (A New Hope) just for a little light at the end of the tunnel.
With this film I can watch it, have fun, and I just leave it at that.
Trey wrote:Well, it is pretty far outside our areas of expertise - so I dunno how much we could say about it in an Intermission other than parroting info from elsewhere.
[snip]
So, if you're willing to tolerate even more of her writing
, a lot of the info you're looking for is in her book.
Her perspective is interesting, but having read a few other things she's written that she'd linked on her website, I'm gonna have to pass. I know my limits.
Trey wrote:The issue of China alone is quite something - yes, it's a massive new market, but there are trade restrictions, content restrictions, etc. Also, a lot of the funding is coming from financiers who've invested heavily in 3D and Imax theaters, and so they only finance content that's produced in... 3D and Imax. So - tentpoles. Nothing but tentpoles. Tentpoles that say positive things about China. (Oh hai, Looper!)
Ah, the promise of the glorious Chinese market, where things are always way more complicated than you thought they'd be and never quite as profitable.
Trey wrote:Comedies rarely translate to foreign markets. However, since comedies are usually lower-budget, there's a growing market for foreign remakes of American comedies if the details can be transposed to make it work for local audiences. (There's a Bollywood edition of Wedding Crashers, apparently).
I was very surprised when Ted, that movie about the talking teddy bear, got a release in Japan. I can't tell you the number of times I've been the only person laughing in the theater. It's embarrassing. I've gone so far as to explain the humor to people afterwards, and usually I'm told that the Japanese subtitles were completely different and no one else even knew it was a joke.

But for some reason, they spent a shit ton of money on a Japanese comedian, Hiroiki Ariyoshi, whose career is white hot right now, to localize the script and provide the dubbed voice of Ted. I'm tempted to rent it, 'cause Seth MacFarlane's style is so different from Ariyoshi's, it would be like getting two movies for the price of one.
Trey wrote:The availability of theaters is a major issue - in China Amazing Spider-man and the Dark Knight Rises had to open the same day , to the detriment of both.
This is an interesting point. Every expat in Tokyo has asked themselves at some point, why we have to wait so damn long for movies over here. I hear a lot of the hype from back home, but by the time I can get in on the action, the topic has completely shifted to the next big thing. No one back home is going to be interested in talking about Man of Steel anymore by late August. Mostly, these delays get blamed on the localization process, which itself is pretty terrible. But Japan's film industry is nothing to sneeze at, and it makes a whole lot more sense if domestic films are getting priority over US-imported tentpole flicks.
Hey, the Attack of the Clones thread just saw a resurgence here so why not Man of Steel?

It is not.
Episodes 1-6 were destroyed during construction Episode 7 vanished 24 hours after going online
It says episode 8, what happened to episode 7?
We don't talk about it
"My Super Ex Girlfriend" had a similar scene. Couldn't find the clip but the final words in the scene are these:
"I'll get you a new one."
"Bed or penis?"
How about a double header, starting with "The Magnificent Seven?" That should get everyone in the mood
This is true - it's really about coming of age (and also about growing old, as personified by Wayne's character) and just happens to take place on horseback.
Also, like a lot of pre-Syd Field movies, the story turns are sometimes really surprising - several things happen where you can't help but think "wow, they sure wouldn't do that in a movie now"
Another reason for you guys to do this movie.
Years ago, two producers had the rights to do a US version of Space Battleship Yamato over at Disney. That would have had, most likely, a refitted USS Arizona coming up out of the ocean and flying off into space.
I thought that was the sequel to U-571?
Can we have Titanic in space?
I believe that's James Cameron's next project
