Thanks for the advice. I'll probably check out Captain America and Thor first.

(At the risk of quibbling) As far as my feelings on Iron Man 2, I passively watched it and had a couple of laughs (a few funny scenes with Robert Downey Jr and Sam Rockwell) but the story never engrossed me nor did any of the other characters really engage me. Thus the film fits my definition of being enjoyable but not super interesting.  smile

Hopefully later I will learn what the deal is with Black Widow.

You didn't miss anything, Iron Man 2 is not that good. The first is greatly superior. Black Widow worked undercover for SHEILD as Tony's assistant. That's basically it, her role in The Avengers has nothing to do Iron Man 2. All you need to know is, she's an assassin/spy. Hawkeye makes a brief appearance in Thor but all you need to know about him is that he too is an assassin. There is a lot to mention and we could do it here but it's probably best you just watch the films, if possible. Who knows, you may like them smile

Perhaps I have misrepresented myself

Well-

I only watched Iron Man 2 while I was doing some VFX work and it never interested me enough to try to closely follow the film

You say that then say you enjoyed both Iron Man films, so I think you can understand why I was confused. Or it is possible I am just very easily confused. Anyway, you should watch Thor and Captain America like I said earlier. It'll be less confusing to you when you watch The Avengers. Thor is a bit of a mess but still watchable and both films should be watched to be able to follow the story in The Avengers. I personally think The Avengers is a better film than Thor and Cap smile

If you have no interest in the Iron Man films you will have no interest in The Avengers. They are clearly not the films for you smile

The best bit of your post is when you say you have seen 'most' of the Iron Man films. As there are only 2 of them does this mean you have only seen the first one? (just messing) big_smile

You should probably see Thor and Captain America. Things will make more sense that way. smile

I don't expect this thread to last and that's ok, I just wanted to share something and couldn't really find an excuse to put it anywhere else. It's not movie talk, otherwise it would have went in that thread. Anyway, earlier today on Twitter, Stephen Fry totally owned a homophobe. I won't use the guy's name, instead I'll just call him what he is-

Homophobe-
@stephenfry Gay fuck
Stephen Fry- @homophobe Lovely offer, but I'm a) busy b) miles away and c) spoken for. But how very flattering.

big_smile Love him. On another note, almost in the same vein. I have a friend on Twitter and from another forum who has a young son. He was at school and the discussion was about marriage. Some kids said marriage is a 'boy' and a 'girl' getting married. Boys can't marry boys and girls can't marry girls. This kid said that girls can marry girls as he was just at his aunt's wedding to another woman. The other kids ridiculed him but he stood his ground and denied there  is anything wrong with it. The teacher scolded him for not admitting that same sex marriage is wrong and the school contacted his mother. They demanded that she punished him for the disruption but she refused and told her son she was proud of him.

If you have any general thoughts or stories about your day or something you have seen and it's too long for the chat, you may put it in here smile

Fair enough, my mistake smile I was half asleep at the live show and can barely remember any of it, it was so late big_smile

Welcome anyway http://www.empireonline.com/forum/upfiles/smiley/happy34.gif

They spoke a bit about the 'curse' during the Dark Knight commentary (I think). They talked about Ledger dying while working with the ex-Parrot....I mean, Python. They could probably talk about the man and his works for a full show, though.

I'm surprised they haven't done a comm for a Gilliam film, actually. smile

Oh, yeah, welcome Lamer. You were at the live show on Sunday, am I right? Anyway, hope you have fun, here.

You'll be the only one! http://www.empireonline.com/forum/upfiles/smiley/augen14.gif

James Cameron,

Good list but they have spoke a ton about the dude above. They've done commentaries for six of his films and Trey has worked with him, so I think they've said basically all they can say about him big_smile

And don't call me Shifty (paraphrasing Airplane big_smile)

I was just thinking, the UK has been getting a few films before the US this year- Goon, The Raven, Battleship, The Get the Gringo (which is straight to DirecTV in the US and it's called How I Spent My Summer Vacation here) and, of course, The Avengers.

I find it very strange.

You mean Paramount, Eddie? smile

(tried to word this many ways as to not look like a dick. Fail.)

The death in Avengers was maybe an attempt to do that, but a futile one - not for one second did I ever think that any Avenger was in actual jeopardy.   Hell, even if they HAD tried to say one of them was dead, we'd all know that wasn't true.    The only thing in the universe more durable than Captain America's shield is the Sequel Cash Cow Force Field.

Absolutely. Feige even admits in the interview that it was attempt at the ol' "they'll think nobody is safe" trick when they killed you-know-who in Avengers. As you say, though, it was pointless. Joss apparently actually questioned Feige and Marvel about it and said something along the lines of- 'you know they'll blame me, right?' big_smile

I've heard people moan about a certain death in The Avengers and saying Joss just can't help himself, he has to kill something we like. Well, apparently, it was actually Marvel's idea and Joss was hesitant at first. This is acording to Kevin Feige in an interview he did with Empire Magazine's podcast- http://www.empireonline.com/podcast/

There are two podcasts with him, the first is a general interview and the second is more spoiler-related.

I own the region 2 Back to the Future trilogy dvds then I got the region 1 dvds for the commentaries that were missing from the one I already had. Then Christmas 2010 I got the Blu Ray set from my mum. That was the same year I got the Alien movies Blu Rays and the Lethal Weapon Blu Rays which I already had on dvd (except the thrid and fourth Alien films). My mum bought me a lot of Blu Rays that year, which is awesome.

I also own the region 1 and 2 versions of Who Framed Roger Rabbit because the r2 disc has no extras.

I gave up watching the movies pretty quick because of PAL / NSTC sync issues.

Yeah, that's a problem. I only listen along with the film if a) I have the region 1 DVD or 2) I have the Blu-Ray.

With my ears.

Seriously, though, I listen along with the film if possible if not, it's just another podcast. With the new format, I listen normally, probably when I'm doing housework or traveling. If I listen to the comm along with the film, I'll probably listen to it again at a later point anyway, again, with the housework or with the traveling.

I really can't wait to see that film big_smile

That is awesome,I want it big_smile
