Topic: The Avengers. Warning, spoilers all over the place.

I loved the way they diffused Thor; going in this was my biggest concern - how do you get past the whole Norse God thing? They made the character vulnerable enough that you never felt it was the Captain Hammer and sidekicks show.

In the UK and AU we didn't get a post credit roll bit. There was the mid-credit sequence but Matt mentioned the US kids got a little more after all was said and done. Details?

Apparently, in the US there's a scene of them all eating dinner or something. Nothing special.

Did your showing get cheers when, in Stark's penthouse, the Hulk smashed Loki mid-monologue?

The dialogue saved the film for me, it harked back to the first Iron Man movie - fast, witty (for the most part), and character driven.

Oh, I haven't seen the movie yet. That's just something I've heard from people who have.  wink I'm seeing it on Saturday.

Re: The Avengers. Warning, spoilers all over the place.

The film was very well balanced between all of them. Every avenger had their moments to really shine, even Hawkeye and Black Widow. Favourite moments were Thor holding his hand out for Mjolnir and then smashing Hulk in the head with it, Hawkeye jumping off the building and firing, Iron Man bouncing his repulsor beam thingies off of Cap's shield, Captain America beating up a bunch of Chitauri and then the cut to the cop issuing the orders he had just been given, Banner transforming into the Hulk for the second time, Thor and Loki talking on the cliff, Cap saying "hulk... smash", and I could go on but really need to see the movie again and soon..

In terms of how they dealt with Thor, I felt it was similar to the Hulk. He's very powerful and, crucially, just doesn't stay down. They both ended up being 'ejected' from the helicarrier in similar ways too. I never felt Thor was losing to Iron Man or Hulk, as he would keep getting back up from whatever he'd been hit with. As a huge Thor fan, this made me very happy.

In the other thread, otero commented that he thought Robert Downey Jnr was the star of the show. I disagree and thought if anyone dominated the film it was the Hulk. Everyone talking about the movie afterwards was talking about the Hulk.

If I had any complaint about the film it was the relatively weak opening action scene. There was a moment where I got a little worried. That said, this film masterfully upped the stakes and the action in a way that Thor, Iron Man and Captain America failed, with the peak occuring in the climax rather than earlier (Frost giant battle, Afghanistan and probably train scene, respectively).

I thoroughly enjoyed it, but yeah, like a lot of Whedon like material, its a tad slow to start.

Yeah, in the US we got a very funny post-credits bit where it's just all the characters at whatever that diner Stark was talking about, eating, all visibly in shock. Goes on for like twenty seconds, nobody says a words. Cut to black.

Got a huge laugh.

Hey, who was the pink guy in the first end credits scene? The guy who's gonna be in the sequel?

Thanos.

That....will be interesting to do, especially if they even try to tackle the Infinity Gauntlet story.  The key line of dialogue there was "To battle earth is to court Death."  I capitalize Death because in the Marvel U, Death is anthropomorphized as a silent woman.   And Thanos is madly in love with her.  So much so that he kills entire populations in a quest to impress her and be her equal.  The way he smiled at that line suggests that that is an aspect of his character that might make it to the screen.

He's such an interesting character though, (and everyone will collectively groan when I suggest this), but HE could have his own movie to set up Avengers 2.

Re: The Avengers. Warning, spoilers all over the place.

I should also note that they planted seeds for TWO possible storylines in the film.  One being Thanos, the other being the Civil War storyline.

In the Civil War arc, the government cracks down on masked superheroes after a battle results in the incineration of a small town, killing thousands.  The government passes a bill requiring all SUper powered folk to register and be employed by the government.  The Avengers split down the middle in their support of it; Iron Man adamantly supports the bill, Captain America does not.  Those who do remain Avengers while Cap leads a dissident underground group of Avengers to battle not just Iron Man's faction, but the nefarious forces behind the new law.  Consequences were never the same.

I heard somewhere that Thanos will be the villain in Avengers 2, and Avengers 3 will basically be Civil War.

Well they finally made a hulk I want to see in his own franchise, as long as Joss writes the script.

They shot this secretly only a week or two ago, and Chris Evans had grown a beard for another project since they wrapped filming. So he had to wear a prosthetic on his face to cover it up. He could barely move his jaw.

Re: The Avengers. Warning, spoilers all over the place.

Just saw it and wow, fucking great comic book movie. It's impressive how many awesome scenes they gave to every character. I also really liked how funny it was. This is how to make a great comic book movie.

There were more laughs coming from Hulk's stuff than anything, tho. The Loki bit in the penthouse, the "...smash" line and subsequent rampage, the bit where he wakes up Stark at the end. The part where he punches Thor... People outside after the show were just recapping how awesome Hulk was. Hulk was pretty rad in this flick. I was kinda more impressed with Black Widow, tho, and how they totally turned her from some second-string afterthought in Ironman 2 to having a couple or really great scenes with her in this one, and some really good fights and stuff.

Best part for me, tho, was after the screening. Just walked outside with a huge smile on my face, and up walks this whole family - sans mom - that were all dressed up like the Avengers. Dad was Nick Fury, the youngest one was Hulk and had those big hulk hands on, the Thor kid had a viking helmet and mjolnir, etc. I so wish I'd had a camera, but I didn't have any of my camera-bearing electronic devices on me at the time. Most awesome dad award goes to that man for the day.

Have to agree, it was one of the better surprises that this character, which I had no investment or interest in from her first outing on screen, turned into such an important part of the story. Most of the thanks for that has to go to Joss, who has a history of writing strong, complex female characters.

This was a really well thought out script, and the balance of screen time worked well. Hawkeye needs to play a bigger role in future films, but now I actually want to know more about that guy. The biggest take away from this film is how much more interesting these characters are, and that's something the Marvel films haven't had since Iron Man 1. Real return to form for these guys, and the thanks has to go to Joss.

This will be a billion dollar film.

I've heard people moan about a certain death in The Avengers and saying Joss just can't help himself, he has to kill something we like. Well, apparently, it was actually Marvel's idea and Joss was hesitant at first. This is acording to Kevin Feige in an interview he did with Empire Magazine's podcast- http://www.empireonline.com/podcast/

There are two podcasts with him, the first is a general interview and the second is more spoiler-related.

Well sure, otherwise you won't pay attention.  smile

I think I told this story in the Serenity commentary, but I saw Serenity at an advance screening and Whedon was there to take questions after.  The very first question was "Why did you kill Wash???"  (So the heck with Shepherd Book, I spose).

Whedon's answer was that it's a given in a TV show that nobody (except guest stars) will die, but a movie needs more than that.  If the audience is convinced that nobody can die, the movie has no stakes.    So Wash and Book died so that in the final battle, the audience would be more likely to be invested.   As in "That crazy Whedon, he might freakin' kill ALL OF THEM!"

The death in Avengers was maybe an attempt to do that, but a futile one - not for one second did I ever think that any Avenger was in actual jeopardy.   Hell, even if they HAD tried to say one of them was dead, we'd all know that wasn't true.    The only thing in the universe more durable than Captain America's shield is the Sequel Cash Cow Force Field.

I wish there was a tyler stout mondo poster of just this.

but I agree with trey, the stakes never felt bigger than the main characters. Coulsen's death doesnt change anything but take something new and interesting to this universe out of the picture. Not complaining, but if I had to kill someone unexpected, it would have been Nick Fury.

Absolutely. Feige even admits in the interview that it was attempt at the ol' "they'll think nobody is safe" trick when they killed you-know-who in Avengers. As you say, though, it was pointless. Joss apparently actually questioned Feige and Marvel about it and said something along the lines of- 'you know they'll blame me, right?' big_smile

Okay, now that I've seen it, I can offer my reaction...

Meh. Fun to watch, but ultimately less fulfilling than the films that preceded it.

Re: The Avengers. Warning, spoilers all over the place.

Just watched it, and I really wish people wouldn't bring their baby kids to the theatre (there were like 3 different ones crying through a lot of the film). The movie was fun, but I really didn't think it was anything too special. I agree that the Hulk really stole the show, ruffalo did a great job as banner, and the other guy was a great addition too. The action scenes were also pretty well done. But honestly the story just never did it for me. I know you aren't supposed to walk into a movie like this expecting a great and intriguing story line, but I couldn't help but feel like something was missing when I walked out. I also don't think this film comes anywhere near the level of The Dark Knight. I know they're supposed to be different, but dark knight was much stronger in my opinion. I think a lot of it has to do with the lack of stakes that trey mentioned.

Now that I think about it, this movie is sort of like a perfectly made sandwich. As far as sandwiches go, its amazing. But I'd rather have a decent steak, than a perfect sandwich.

Re: The Avengers. Warning, spoilers all over the place.

Loved it but I have one issue. Nick Fury says the world needs remarkable people to come together to fight battles. Tony Stark is one of these people because he has a suit of armor more advanced than any other piece of technology on the planet. Only one other person has the technology.
