But, regardless, I will probably still think Trek 09 was better fair than this.

When did the movie become Van Hellboy?

I've seen Van Helsing maybe twice, mostly for Jackman but I think that there are way, way to many monsters in that film. I think that if it had just been about the fight against vampires, maybe with werewolf, maybe without, it could have worked...maybe.

But, as it is, there are too many monsters, too much that requires the audience to just "go with it" without any real relationships. Its kind of like "Van Helsing's Leauge of Extraordinary Gentlemen" in it superficial relationships and too many monsters theme

I just find the whole book of Ender's game to be rather dumb and uninteresting. Some decent  concepts in there like the combat training but beyond that it's just not my thing.

Also, we all know how FIYH feel about kids in movies wink

The first book also features a very, very violent Ender, while Speaker he is much more subdued and reserved, like the wise old man of the space lanes.

Seeing as how Gerrold has planed on doing a TV show since he left Star Trek and created a whole series bible for The Star Wolf. When the show didn't pan out he wrote books. Not sure how well they didn't seeing as how I didn't really know about until I got it for a gift.

And the CGI doesn't bother me as much so not sure if that's my unprofessional eye or if I just have watched too many fan films wink

So, what is really wrong with Van Helsing? I mean, I can point to specific things I don't like, and the panel did as well, but what's the bottom line? Is this script just too much of a mess to save?

To me, it's got about three movies' worth (or a whole TV season's worth) of monsters and villains and crazy happenings.

I think this is exactly the answer to your question. There is simply too damn much going on to engage meaningfully with it. It's like every character always has three goals pulling him or her in three different directions, with no really meaningful throughline for anyone, and no tension can be built because to juggle all these threads the movie has to essentially change the subject every couple of minutes, particularly at the climax when things start happening all on top of each other.

You save the script, IMO, by making the story about dealing with ONE monster, and Van Helsing just has to incidentally wade through some other monsters along the way because that's the world he inhabits. As Trey said, it's the attempt to create the Grand Unified Theory of Classic Monsters that sinks it.

I think the panel summed it up quite well when they said that Sommers basically went "I want to do all the classic monsters" rather than taking them on one at a time like he did with "The Mummy."

That is Van Helsing's greatest downfall-it really doesn't know what it wants to be when it grows up.

I wish Gerrold well. I own the complete Star Wolf book in one volume and it is an interesting story. I highly recommend reading it, if you can find it.

I think Gerrold is shoring up his base and trying to be more expansive in his vision.
Or maybe he is just testing the waters.

You're not alone. I don't love it but its not really my favorite thing. I enjoyed the 9th Doctor and most of Tennant's run but haven't really been comfortable with Smith and have just kind of let it fall off for the most part.

I still have friends, online and otherwise, who love DW and watch it frequently. I feel like an outsider looking in but I have my own interests too. Just part of growing up

I see what you are saying, but are we to believe that Tonys ego is too big to see a psychologist about some minor anxiety attacks, yet he is willing to leave behind what has defined him for so long, and what he has put so much work into? in my opinion you cannot really have both and still have a consistent characher. The final line in the film is basically "I am still Iron Man", so clearly he destroyed almost all his work despite mentally not being finished with it.

Well, that line was halfway a joke but I'll engage in serious psych chat here for a moment,

I was honestly thinking about it after reading some of the posts and think that Tony could use a psych because his behavior is clearly a little insane. You mentioned inconsistent but I think his behavior is more internally consistent in that he identifies himself as Iron Man regardless of having the suit. Captain American challenges him in Avengers but Tony responds with his classic quip about all the other things that he is. He also discusses that the Arc reactor is his curse, pointing out that what makes the suit able to go is still a part of him.

So, I think in 3 (and bear in mind I haven't seen it but have gathered enough from this thread to make a preliminary diagnosis wink ) he is literally going from dependent on the suit to not needing the suit but still calling himself "Iron Man" because he feels that what makes Iron Man special is himself, not the suit.

I will be picking up a microphone on Friday so I will be prepped and ready.

As for Tony blowing up the suits at the end, the final line in the film is "I am Iron Man". But... you're not though, if the suits are gone and if you let that part of you go...?
And why did Tony have to let Iron Man go? Because he was traumatized? He had some very mild panic attacks that last like 20 seconds each and he abandons the entire thing? Surely a psychologist is alot better than blowing up the thing that has kept America safe from so many threats? Surely thousands of bad people will descend on you, now unable to defend yourself as efficiently, and kill you and loved ones in an attempt to keep you from ever coming back should you change your mind?

Also the suits at the end are blown up. Considering that we've seen his suits handle most about everything in previous movies, those must be some magic explosives?

I'm just confused. Reading this thread has made me aware of a few things I've missed plot-wise and character-wise, but so has many others it seems. So can we agree by concensus that the plot is way too unclear at the very least?

Do we really think that Tony would see a psychologist? I mean, the narcissism alone would make Freud quit the business

I know I haven't seen the movie, but it is interesting to see them play with the premise that is set up in Avengers, where Dr. Banner and Tony discuss the difference between the Hulk and Iron Man. Tony notes the arc reactor is a bit of a curse, keeping him alive. The idea of the movie of exploring this vulnerability of Tony's is at least enough that I might watch the film, plot holes or no plot holes.
