I was really surprised by the trailer for Rainbow Six Siege, thought it was superb (however scripted it may be).

It actually hit me harder than the Red Wedding, oddly.

I have never reacted so strongly to reading something in a novel. I was literally nauseous for a few minutes afterwards.

I'm so tempted to start watching the series (left off on season 2) as I'm intrigued about whether it's possible to experience that same shock again.

I think any film you show to a child is going to have some aspect some parent somewhere is going to find objectionable. The notion that such films are going to be 'pure' is unrealistic. Also, kids often respond and draw messages differently from adults. In the case of Brave, a young girl is much more likely to take away the idea that she should listen to her parents, specifically her mother, and to cherish the time they have with each other, and not 'I'm a girl and therefore the world treats me unfairly'.

Taken 2

I'm a big fan of the 'Liam Neeson kills people/animals' genre and I'm also a fan of watching bad things happen to bad people, and this film does both very well. I had been warned that it wasn't as good as the first, so perhaps these lowered expectations and the wariness on my part helped, but I loved this.

Bryan Mills is also the closest that we've come to getting a proper Frank Castle on screen.

My bet is that Rickon will be the Lord of Winterfell when it all ends. He's the only viable candidate now anyhow. I'm fine with him not having a function in the story up to then as well, not every character has to be.

Considering said pacing and content of the last two books, a little rushing would probably do the story some good.

Very true. However, too much rushing could dramatically impact the overall quality of the opus. I'd hate for it to end like James Clavell's Shogun, suddenly and unsatisfactorily, or just to have a whole load of character threads dropped. For instance, I'll be pissed if we don't find out the fate of the Blackfish and Sandor.

I don't think GRRM is capable of rushing anything anyway.

I'd be surprised if we didn't get an eighth book, based on what we have seen in the last two (i.e., their pacing and content). There's not enough book left to wrap up all the plot threads without the story being rushed.

Thank you Teague. As much as we're all chomping at the bit for any news about these movies, it's best to remain blissfully ignorant.

I have a feeling there'll be a lot of overlap here, so just going to name five, and really, they're the only 5 worth talking about  tongue

Jackie Chan - Police Story, Armour of God, Project A, Dragons Forever, Wheels on meals etc.
Arnold Schwarzenegger - Predator, Running Man, Conan, Total Recall
Bruce Willis - Die Hard(s), Last Boy Scout, Tears of the Sun
Mel Gibson - Mad Max, Lethal Weapon, Payback
Sly Stallone - Tango and Cash, Cobra, Rambo II, Demolition Man, Stop or My Mom Will Shoot

Honourable mention:
Gerard Butler - 300, Machine Gun Preacher, Olympus Has Fallen

I saw this today and really liked it. The one main flaw is the whole 'future Pryde must keep mind phase link thingy active for entire time'. Given that the events in '73 occur over multiple days, are we to infer then that Kitty Pryde spent several days sitting motionless over Wolverine and didn't eat, shit or sleep?

Been on a roll of movies lately.

Special Forces (2011)
http://garethrhodes.files.wordpress.com/2012/08/special-forces.jpg
A surprisingly entertaining French movie about a team of, wait for it, special forces operating in Pakistan. Worth a watch.

Red Dawn (2012) remake
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/9/97/Red_Dawn_FilmPoster.jpeg
Kinda pointless. I love the original and if you're going to do a remake, you better at least come to the table matching or exceeding the Swayze and Sheen combo. Instead, the younger brother is horribly miscast and the action muddy. Easy miss.

Argo (2012)

I really enjoyed this one and thought it was really well made. Seems deserving of the praise it received.

Non-stop (2014)
http://www.nerdist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/image001.jpg
Very surprised with this one. I was entranced throughout, glued to the edge of my seat and utterly thrilled right to the credits. Liam Neeson is great as per usual.

Jack Reacher (2012)

Wasn't bad, wasn't great. It has some interesting moments, enough to make it memorable, though I think it suffers from having a weak villain (which is all the more important when you have a force of nature protagonist).

I like that, it's catchy.

On the movie, isn't this the one where it opens with Denzel killing a cat?

One that has stuck in my mind for quite a few years has been The Five Steps to Tyranny. It examines how  groups of people can get to the point where they are killing each other, and just how easy it is.

Conspiracy certainly makes for sobering viewing and is utterly riveting. It's set up rather like a play, with much of the action taking place in the same room with some superb actors just bouncing off each other.

I saw Lone Survivor recently:

It's a shame that the title gives so much away. Later I found it was based on a book of the same name and that it was based on a real op (Operation Red Wings), but I wonder whether they could retained some sense of surprise with a different name. Anyway, I'm a fan of Peter Berg (even like Battleship to a degree) so was keen to see this. It doesn't disappoint but I struggle to find much to say about it. It's perfectly competent and adequately entertaining, but never quite blossoms (I guess?) into anything of substance or memory - especially when compared to The Kingdom, which I love and hits on several layers.

Not sure it really counted as a complaint, and the comment was less about MDK specifically and more about the potential for a double standard being applied. What for instance is acceptable exploitation of low common denominators and who gets to decide? Can all agree on the lowest common denominators anyway? Why is the use of cartoon animation ok for one channel and not for another? Why is one ridiculous comedy series better than another ridiculous comedy series?

You've explained your intentions better above, though I completely disagree on FreddieW's channel. I struggle to think of another channel that has broken the typical youtube mold of "talking crap into webcam" more.

I watched a couple of episodes a long time ago, she appeared as a guest on TableTop and seemed fun to watch. It's not really my thing but isn't that objectionable. I'm just a little bewildered to see it be touted as a shining light of intelligent, smart YouTube. Eye of the beholder I guess.

It's peculiar to be complaining about providers who cater to the lowest common denominator and then recommend a provider that gets drunk and cooks...

So animators object to being referred to as 'digital make-up artists', but I'd have thought that almost speaks to their disregard of make-up artists -  they do after all play a key role in helping actors create characters.

It also seems that a lot of it is extrapolation and exaggeration of what Andy Serkis has actually said.

How odd, I'm unable to view that page (it's BBC International). Are you able to post a few of the highlights?

I too have that 'cinema glow' coming out, and despite knowing that this feeling is misleading I often still let this form my judgement of the film overall - so I've returned from films like Man of Steel and Star Trek 2 and have posted to the the forum whilst still on the buzz. Mistakes were made.

I walked back on 'Wreck it Ralph' recently, first seeing it with some friends a while ago and then with some of my nephews and nieces; the second time was so much more fun.

I've only seen the first episode of Continuum so maybe she carries it well later. I mostly remember her for being a poor and ill-advised replacement to Jennifer Garner in ALIAS, which is hardly fair to her. Maybe it's like a Natalie Portman sort of thing where she can be pretty bad (as seen in GI Joe and Conan), but can be good given the right direction/material as you say.
