I'd say you missed a fair amount of the point of Harry Potter

It's about some teen wizards who repeatedly use almost no magic to discover the dark secret of a succession of Defense Against the Dark Arts teachers. And then they go camping for a whole movie. Right? smile

Harry spends the series becoming the hero everyone believes he is, which I think is far more interesting than if he just started that way.

Movie SEVEN: Hermione has made all the preparations. Hermione leads their escapes and picks their locations. Hermione knows how to make their camp undetectable. Hermione explains the plot to Harry. Hermione makes the disguise potion. Hermione saves Ron's arm. Hermione disguises Harry from the snatchers.

Harry... has to be saved from drowning after diving into a frozen pond alone to retrieve a sword that appeared to him without his doing anything.

That Hermione is gonna make a hell of a wizard some day. Harry? Not so much.

Hurray for Harry! Sort of....

I'm of two minds about the Potter films. I never had any interest in the books, but I've mostly enjoyed the movies, but not as much as I'd like. After the first one, I thought, 'Cool! So Harry is just starting to learn magic and will grow into a kick-ass wizard in the next couple of films!"

Then the second film came out, and it was still set in the school, and Harry didn't really do any magic, but he did wield a sword. And I thought, 'Okay, so he'll start whippin' out spells next time and start exploring the wizarding world."

And then the third one came out, and it was STILL set in the school. And the whole plot CLIMAXES with Harry casting ONE spell while Hermione runs around accomplishing all kinds of secret shit. And I was like, "Okay, really? This is the great Harry Potter that everyone talks about like he's the MESSIAH?"

Now we're SEVEN movies in, and it's STILL Sweet Valley High with wands that shoot phaser blasts. About all the magic Harry can accomplish is knocking people down. And he still doesn't know SHIT compared to JK Rowling—I mean "Hermione".

But I've long since settled into enjoying the films as a bit of murky fluff.

Now...
The Company She Keeps. I'm a sucker for Lizabeth Scott (and Jane Greer's no slouch), and this was juicier and better acted than a 50s melo deserved to be. Funny trivia: Greer averts suspicion at a train station by holding a baby while the mother retrieves her older child. The mother is Mrs. Lloyd Bridges and the boy and baby are Beau and Jeff.

Everything is Illuminated. Interesting quirky character piece with Elijah Wood that somehow lacks punch despite some pretty heavy happenings. Wood is an American who travels to Russia to find out what happened to the people who saved his Jewish grandfather's life. Anybody else see this?

Yeah, I think it has, unfortunately. Maybe I'll forget about it by the time I order, receive, and watch the Blu-ray.

Yes, yes it was. It was atrocious.

I was watching with the Bootleg Director commentary (and they really liked it), so I was perhaps spared the full brunt of the Gyllenhaal idiom.

It's really cleverly done, but from a pure spectator's standpoint kind of dull, in that, since the cameraman is following the character, nearly everything takes place from the same angle, and so we become acutely aware that we are following him, rather than just being there, witnessing the events, altho I know doing them is difficult, and therefore I do understand why film makers are impressed with each other for them, but they've never done anything for me—especially apparent long takes with hidden cuts, Hitchcock's Rope being an extreme example.

It reminds me of the Victorian fad for writing long sentences. ^^^

@Zarban re: Salt - you saw the Directors Cut, right ?!

Nope. I recorded it from a movie channel. Judging from the description on Wikipedia, it looks like it might be worth seeing the director's cut on Blu-ray, especially if they're going to do a sequel.

Now recently seen:

  • Prince of Persia (not terrible)

  • My Pal Trigger (Roy Rogers was a dangerous troublemaker, as far as I could tell)

  • Into the Wild Green Yonder (fourth Futurama movie)

  • 2012: Ice Age (People flee a glacier... you read that right)

  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows 1 (niece hadn't seen it; best camping movie since Meatballs)

  • Without Reservations (John Wayne & Claudette Colbert; she never did it for me)

  • Wanted (sight unseen with DIF then first third of it again afterward; actually kind of crazy, silly fun)

  • The Road to Singapore (first Road movie; not great; pat-a-cake gag was never funny)

  • Salt (good, not what I expected)

  • Star Trek 3: The Search for Spock (really enjoyed it)

  • Throbbing Teen Penetrations 9 (you really don't need to see 1-8 to follow the plot)

Next on the docket: 2012: Ice Age

Most of Teague's crew, you already know. This is Apoc, Switch, and Cypher. The ones you don't know, Tank, and his big brother, Dozer...The little one behind you is Mouse.

Don't bother hitting on Switch. We call her that for a reason.

Well, I imagine this has to be Watership Down, but I'll be damned if I can figure out how "Hazel" is a synonym for "Watership" or "Black Rabbit" is a synonym for "Down". But we seem to have drifted into some weird metaphorical territory earlier with "singular beings" who are equivalent to butterflies....
