Let's talk about this.

This movie absolutely blew my mind. I've never seen a movie that literally does everything wrong. There is nothing right about this movie.

Now, normally, when a film this bad comes along, there's one thing that I can say about it. Recently, I said it about The Last Airbender. When I stumble out of the theater, I turn to the person nearest me and say, "Hey, at least the effects were okay."

As anyone who knows anything about this movie knows, they weren't.

I know Eddie recently did a very funny live-tweeting of his first reactions to the film, so what does everyone else think about it? (It's streaming on Netflix)

I think it's just about time for an Iron Man 2 commentary. Maybe pair that with Last Airbender.

Of course, everyone knows that the real story of Trey's life can be found in the film Die Hard.

Whoa. That might be one of the best definitions of "magic bean" ever.

Can we have a : holden : type thing that inserts a picture of the Orson Welles clap? I think it would be very applicable to a variety of situations.

How in the flying fuck did Coraline not win an Oscar for Best Original Score? I mean, just listen to it.

By the way, check out this movie ASAP. It's really great.

You know, I heard that Holden once brought down an entire race of villainous space-slugs with nothing but a laptop and his wits.

I dunno if this is just because it came out so recently, but the first one that comes to mind is Milk.

I know you can't watch it in their native app.

In fairness to Mr. Fincher, in my previous post I forgot he also directed Panic Room, which I would put in my "hit" category.

Finally, someone who agrees with me about that movie! Everyone I talk to about it seems to hate it, which baffles me.

He also made Benjamin Button, which I like a lot.

What is it with Trey and Fincher? I think he's one of the best directors working today.

I propose a double-feature: Brick and Winter's Bone. Call it the "new noir."

So, a good movie and a bad movie! I like Brick, but Winter's Bone was repetitive and dull. But both of them are great DiF movies.

That's his list of the best directors ever, and it seems to follow the same logic. "They made a film that I liked, therefore they are great!" I doubt he could name a film by Vittorio de Sica that isn't Bicycle Thieves, or a film by William Wyler that isn't Ben-Hur. I know I shouldn't feed the troll, but IMDb has a way of getting to me.

His username is "HACK_Nolan". I'm guessing troll.

EDIT: He clearly doesn't know a whole heck of a lot about filmmaking. "I didn't like that film they did. Clearly it's because they're a bad director, and not for the millions of other reasons why a film could be bad. Also, anyone who thinks that Trey Parker and Matt Stone aren't good is clearly a dumbass.

FURTHER EDIT: "Don't try to act all tough and knowledgeable about movies, because you fail every time." That sentence is so dense with irony that it could pull a space station out of orbit.

I just mentioned this on Twitter, but the trailer looked fan-made to me, as if it was cut together from lots of different movies. But those dogfights do look cool, even if the dialogue is embarrassing.

And not just any Star Wars plot point. The single most well-known Star Wars plot point, even and especially to people who have never seen the films.

Yes, but if "Vader duels Luke and chops off his hand" was cut out entirely, the story wouldn't make sense. If the Paris sequence in G.I. Joe was removed, the story would not suffer at all. You could cut the Vader fight and just have Luke explain it later, but it's the climactic moment of that film, and it is essential, unlike the entire Paris scene.

The greatest thing about this commentary is that the trailer for Scorsese's new kid's fantasy film premiered before the final Harry Potter movie. If only they had known...

No, I agree with you there. Tons of happy endings work without cheese. But in the context of everything that came before it, this ending didn't for me. And this one was definitely forced. When your ending requires you to invent some completely new sci-fi bullshit to justify it being optimistic, don't do that ending. The movie was totally uncomfortable with allowing its main character to die a happy death, even when the audience wasn't. I may be a cynic, but I thought the movie was cynical as well. In that way, the ending was a total cop-out.

EDIT: And even if I did buy that absurd "alternate universes" crap, the ending raises dozens of questions that it refuses to answer in favor of watching our hero walk happily into the sunset (in someone else's body, by the way. I guess there's no room for that poor guy in this brave new world!)

The ending totally ruins the film for me. If they had faded to black on "that shot", the movie would have been beautiful, poignant, and satisfyingly dark. However, the last five minutes give us a cliched, forced conclusion, complete with some baffling sci-fi and cheesy sentiment. When I show it to people, I will shut it off before that scene.
