Wow. Way to dig this one out of the archives. big_smile

Although it's kinda intersting looking back on this now with a year and half of distance, and getting to talk about it. As far as all the VFX stuff goes, the cartooney ramp, the lack of any bridge element in the wide shot, all of that, I completely agree. And was well aware of it when I was making it and certainly had plans plans to fix it all; the only thing I can blame is the time crunch and my nievity about certain things when it came to jumping into a project this huge, as a film school project, with such a short deadline to finish it in.

I know you're trying to establish a fictional universe, but the narration doesn't seem to add to this particular scene. I think we can wait to find out about the postbellum stuff after we care more about this character.

I absolutely agree...now. Yeah, it was really just one of the things that I had spent so much time developing this universe and my mind was so clouded with the idea that this was the only time that it would get to be conveyed, that I just couldn't kill that paticular baby. If I ever did a special edition of this short (won't happen, but it's a good lesson to learn) the narration would be the first thing to go.

I also didn't understand the reason for the Resident Evil-ish in-your-face close-up of the guy's gun after shooting; it didn't seem to give us important information. But that may be just a style preference on my part.

Heh. Yeah...I really don't have an explanation for this one. It seemed like a good idea at the time. I remember something about it being a cool establishing shot of our bad guy, while also being pretty dynamic and interesting looking. Yeah. I was young and stupid at the time tongue

I did, however, like the Resident Evil-ish Alice-like eye that the woman had.

Thanks. That was actually meant to be a larger thing in the short than it turned out to be, and in the full version of whatever Lily In The Wind becomes, it's actually a central point around which a lot of it revolves, (At least at the moment, heh, ooh writing)

languageandhumor wrote:

That and the mysterious "No"-backslash-symbol "NP" graffiti on the pillars made me curious about this world. I also liked the woman's chewed-to-bleeding fingernails and the dialog "Typical"; that's excellent compact character-building.

Thanks! I did try to get as much in there as possible. The NP symbol was actually just a cool thing we found on the bridge when we got there to shoot, though, gotta love lucky stuff like that!

As a Firefly fan, I'm glad to see that Leaf On's little sister Lily In is getting her own movie. Have you been able to do more with this in the last year and a half? I look forward to seeing more.

Well, as I've sort of alluded to throughout this post. I am still working on it. It's unfortunately had to be pushed on to a backburner for a little while though while I try to muddle through some more pressing matters. But it's still there, and being thought about. The problem is that if I'm going to do the story I really think I need to tell with this, it's a lot larger than I think anyone is expecting, so it's gonna take a while to get off the ground. But we'll see how things play out.

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.

1)Terry Gilliam
2)Heath Ledger
3)Some nobody named Andrew Garfield(...like he'll ever do anything again, pssh)
4) How to pull out of the nosedive that is your lead male dying partway through production.

Gotcha fire. Yeah, i really need to finish S10. S9 was kinda a let down story wise for me. It just kinda wandered around for a while and ended with Burnie giving himself a huge monolouge that supposedly....meant...something?...and fixed Church...somehow?

Anyways, it's been a while since I watched S9, so it might be better a 2nd time around for the Blood Gulch storyline.

That was the end of S8. S10 is the most recent.

Unless you were referring to the last season of post Blood Gulch Freelancer.

Either way. Yeah. The fight scenes in S9/10 are freaking epic (And that one at the end of 8). The entire Falling Towards The Sky sequence, the fight before and the falling sequence, gives me happy feelings all over.

That reminds me...I really need to do a RvB marathin sometime soon, I fell off the wagon a little ways into S10.

EDIT: C-Spin...interesting. Have to watch that. And yeah, I know what you mean about JT. Even if I wanted to, I couldn't not love him. He's easily been the best thing on SNL in the last decade.

Coming soon from Roosterteeth. A series, based around a bunch of pretty kickass looking Mounty Oum fights, with zero connective story tissue. Alright then.

Alright, gotta give it to the marketing guys. The movie may reek like rotten hagfish, but that website is a damn nice piece of work.

Sometimes, a movie does need to be explained after the fact. That doesn't necessarily make it fundamentally broken, it's just not everyone will understand it right away, which I think is more often than not, a "fault" of the audience, not the movie.

meh. I've seen worse.

Just thinking...I really want to add one thing in response to what Jim says at the very end.

I don't think the issue is that the creative critcism is just that "It needed another writer.", that's kind of missing the point. The creative crit comes from understanding WHY it needed another writer and WHY another writer would have been better for THIS project.

Which sure, you can level the claim that another writer would have been better at every movie ever. But if you can actually lay out the argument for every movie made, about why and how 'so and so' would have made it better, you are gonna learn a whole hell of a lot along the way.

Which....I think...is Teagues point.

2,138

TL,DR.

Jim looks at movies like movies. Teague looks at movies like case studies.

Fair enough, yes?

EDIT:

On reflection, I realized I kinda lost the point I was trying to make in my desire to be brief.

Basically, what I mean is that. On some sort of basic level you guys look at movies and view movies in very different ways...like in a "from the ground up" sort of difference. Jim seems to watch a movie and base it solely on what it brings to the table and then casts judgement. Teague watches a movie and sees the glimmers of light poking through the cement wall, and extrapolates them out into what the movie could have been with a few minor changes, and compares that movie to the one that was delivered.

FYI...in this instance I would consider myself closer to a Teague on this spectrum tongue

IDK...just kinda what struck me as an outside observer reading that.

Monsters University seems like a title looking for a story. "Let's make another Monsters, Inc. movie. It has to have a similar title. Monsters Hotel? Monsters Hospital? Monsters.com? USS Monsters? Monsters vs Aliens? No, no, no. Never mind. Monsters University? Yeah, that's good enough."

Personally I wanted to see Monster's Gone Wild.

(This does not mean stop saying what the video is or talking about it, I'm just sick of seeing meaningless apologies in advance.)

Back on topic.

I'm rewatching Rango for the umpteenth time atm. I can never get over how freaking good it is. I think it could definitely make for an interesting DiF. It would make an interesting counterpoint to the Disney/Pixar/Dreamworks thing that is so prevalent these days at the very least (And seeing as those are the only animated movies you've done thus far...hint hint, nudge nudge).
