So until America discovers Swiss levels of social equity and welfare, perhaps reducing the number of firearms is not such a terrible idea? Obviously if the British invade, you can go hell-for-leather again.

I must be ready for the next British invasion. The Beatles were bad enough wink

Again, my point though is that to reduce the guns available to legal owners will do nothing for black markets, and other illegal means. It will not make the US safer.

No, it's not fallacious. Britons and Canadians largely commit their crimes WITHOUT guns. And that's why their murder rates are extremely low despite the fact that their overall crime rates and ours have met in the middle. Taking guns out of a population largely stops them from murdering people because it is really hard to stab someone to death unless you've been trained.

HOWEVER, Switzerland demonstrates that a well-armed population does not NECESSARILY commit murder at American rates. This is because they do not have urban free-fire zones filled with angry, unemployed gangbangers with no prospects in life.

If you want to keep guns and have a kinder, gentler society, you have to argue that we need to improve our social conditions to reduce the population of people living lives of desperation. People who are members of the NRA do not give a shit about that.

Well written, sir, but I must ask that if your logic is that all NRA members don't care about improving social conditions, then would it stand that nonmembers care?
I agree that a kinder and more gentle society with guns requires a societal change, but I don't think the apathy towards such a change rests solely with one group in American society, anymore than I think that the attitude of Americans towards guns, gun laws or lack thereof, caused the Aurora, or any other, shooting.

Oy, I love guns, but John Stossel is a total hack.

re: More Guns, Less Crime... If you take out the author's own supporting papers, there are just as many papers that refute his findings as support them.

Violent crime is way down all over the US. You can't propose specific causes without really careful controls.

I understand your point, Zarban, but I was more providing fuel for discussion, regardless of my personal opinion of the author. My frustrations stem from the fact that people tend to run to extremes with guns, either for or against. But, the idea that regulating guns somehow decreases gun related crimes is quite fallacious, given the fact that, as Stossel points out, both Britain and Canada have stricter gun laws and have similar crime rates to the United States. The criminals still get guns because they have no regard for the laws.

Again, I will relate to my own experience. I had a customer come in and wanted to purchase a gun. I informed him that he would have to do the paperwork and then I would run the background check. He told me I didn't need to run the background check (Jedi mind trick?). When I insisted that I did, he informed me he would acquire a gun through other means. My point? There are other means for someone intending to use guns for bad reasons to get them.

Dave: I thought the trend is "anything" happens in the states and gun sales go up drastically? They voted Obama in and gun sales went up.

I work in a sporting goods retailer in the United States, in Idaho, which is known for its hunters. When Obama was elected, gun sales went up as people feared increase gun regulation and prices going up.

Guess what? Prices have gone up and the rules for buying guns have changed. Not changed a lot, but there was still a change.
Not trying to politicize the tragedy that Aurora obviously is. It just frustrates me that something goes wrong people run and buy guns. Um, people run to lots of things when something goes wrong. I think alcohol sales went up when Obama was elected too.

Everyone else, maybe we should mail Teague some caffeine pills-just saying wink

Something to help with the Battleship depression:

So, I just finished this podcast, probably the most depressing ending to DiF commentary I've heard which scares me. I mean, I figured Trey had been around the horn a couple of times but battleship apparently was the tipping point. But, like he said in Avengers, movies like that and Battleship will be a bunch of skyscrapers falling down. But, the fact that Battleship apparently took that and other affects to a whole new level puts me on the same level of Trey that Hollywood is just producing the same thing because somewhere there was a movie that made it and now that is all they make.
In my opinion, the video game looks better

I'm just trying to get into Loki's mind to figure out his motivation. If ants are to us what we are to Loki, then I can't really work out what he's trying to achieve. "Look Dad, here's my ant-farm I built myself - it's all mine."

But as Dorkman said, Loki could be just mad, so anything goes.

I don't think Loki is mad in the sense we understand madness. Mad is often irrational or disjointed in their thinking-note I am not talking psychotic, because I think Loki is more along the psychotic line.

I think Loki is trying to spite Thor in taking over Earth, or Midegard, first. His motivation is revenge-pure and simple. The pain he feels at being "cast out" as he sees it, from Asgard gives him the right to take from whatever he wants and he wants Thor to suffer, and make him feel the pain of losing a world like Loki sees that he lost rule of Asgard. Since Thor cares about Earth, he will take that from him.

I can draw a basic parallel to Satan's tale in "Paradise Lost." Loki is similar to Satan in that he was cast out and ended up on Earth, and filled with wrath, unleashes it on humanity, requiring Odin's intervention who sends Thor, his son.

Of course, in Marvel's Asgardian mythos, Loki is the brother of Thor, but Jesus is the only son of YHWH, so parallels must end somewhere. Any analogy will break at some point.

Technically, Zarban, as we are now in the splitting hairs thread, that passage refers to the Antichrist and the end times.

And, also technically, isn't that picture of Thor not Odin?

Haven't had a chance to listen to the full commentary yet. But did anyone else really find the sound that the destroyer made to be really annoying? When I watched it in the theatre I had to cover my ears everytime that thing shot out its death laser thing.

Yeah, I hated the Destroyer in all its forms. I would have prefered Loki unleashing the Ice Giants on Earth.
I liked Thor, but the Ice Giants needed more time, in my opinion. They were introduce as being huge beings with a huge grudge against Asgard. Um, why not play that out more? I would have taken the whole movie being in Asgard, honestly. I thought the parts not on Earth were much better. I get the whole learning humility thing and like Thor's character arc but the other characters on Earth just seemed along for the ride.

And I had not seen Iron Man 2  I did not realize that the small town was supposed to be within Stark's line of sight. I thought the whole idea was it is a small town kind of off the grid.

My wife and I both enjoy good music and orchestral pieces so I tend to have an ear for those things. I think I am a bit of a freak to, but I have been noticing a trend towards more strings and less horns in the scores of movies of late or am I crazy.

And thanks, Matt, for the link. That song has been stuck in my head now...not a bad thing big_smile

That's right you maggots, you better fix that recto-cranial impaction of yours, and either grab a gun and stand a post, or get to work on some CG bullshit that'll scare the bejezzus out of the enemy! I want that concept artwork on my desk in 30 minutes! DO YOU GET ME???

Seriously though, in light of the fact that I haven't done show notes in, like, forever, maybe it is time for a change, and "DIF Commander" has a nice ring to it.

I could prance around saying things like,

"My Momma could type faster than that. AND SHE LOST BOTH HANDS IN THE WAR!"

"How's THIS for Modern Warfare you limp wristed pathetic excuse for a human being!  If that render isn't finished in the next FIVE MINUTES, I'm gonna LET the zombies breach that barricade, and guess what? YOUR FAT ASS WILL BE ZOMIE FOOD!"

"You keep running your purdy little mouth like that, and you won't be able to run a server, let alone run for your life!"

"I want everyone's Zombie Plan on my desk by 1700 tomorrow, AND DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT TELLING ME YOU DON'T HAVE ONE!"

"Who were you expecting, numb nuts? Captain fucking America? He's dead! He died...IN THE WAR!"

Also, great episode guys.  What really worries me is that I came out of Iron Man 2 with a similar feeling of "Fuck yeah, that was fun!" only to realize after the fact that it really wasn't very good.  I look forward to the eventual commentary.

Matt as Commander of DIF would probably say something like this:

On to the Avengers and the chat:
First of all, great chat and I enjoyed everyone's perspectives about the various milieu that Whedon had to wade through in order to somehow bring this together. It gives a whole new appreciation for the amount of craziness that goes in to movie making. As Teague said, sit down and make Avengers-Go! Its pure insanity, I tell you, yet the movie worked.

I am surprised that no one commented on the music though. Personally, I though the score was amazing, enjoyed the main theme, and overall sound of the movie. Though, besides the main theme, the song going with the first half of the credits is probably my favorite smile
