I'm a fan of "Press Play" and "The Back Row". Fridge Logic is clever, but it sounds like you're reviewing snack food and/or appliances.
My official vote is still for "The Intermission" though. It's short, sweet, and established. There's even already a logo for it.
It seems a bit obvious, but has "The Intermission" been ruled out? I thought that name was solid when it was applied to the non-commentary episodes.
Paranormal Activity. A great format to discuss found-footage filmmaking, and the process of a small indie movie becoming a blockbuster. Alternatively, Paranormal Activity 2 is an even better movie, and opens the discussion to horro sequels.
Scream, Cabin, and Trick r Treat all also have potiental.
I'll be honest, I was absolutely heartbroken when I learned that Stanton was completely responsible for Carter's marketing disaster. I adore Wall-E, and I wanted nothing more than for him to make it out of JC okay. But.. eh. Damn. Are marketing campaigns headed by the film's director a common occurance? Because if not, I can totally see why now.
Ah, would've been cool to see a live Oscar discussion. But still, can't wait.
Additionally, you guys should do Begins around the time Rises hits in July. #obvioussuggestion #hashtagsoutsidetwitter

But the real surprise is that the phrase "Oscar nominee Jonah Hill" now exists in our universe.
Meh. I was equally surprised by "Oscar Nominee Jesse Eisenberg" last year. And "Serious Oscar Contender Daft Punk".
I'm a little angered Drive & Dragon Tattoo were snubbed for Best Picture, but not really suprised.
Loud & Close is just shameful. It's a bad movie, plain and simple. The only things driving it are star power, and playing off the 9/11 anniversary. A cheap tactic.
Oh, and I think it's universally agreed that The Artist has snagged Best Picture. Actor/Actress will be interesting though.
1. Transformers 3
2. Kick-Ass
3. The Dark Knight
4. The Last Airbender
5. Close Encounters
6. Super 8
I'm interested in the change. I'll admit - I've looked forward more to The Intermission week-to-week than the commentaries - partially for the easier-to-digest format (don't need to find/pirate a copy of the week's movie, only takes up 30 minutes-1 hour of my day), and the diversity of topics addressed.
Obviously I hope you guys don't forget about the commentaries completely (maybe ease it down to one a month, or at least some sort of set schedule). As for last-call suggestions, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Paranormal Activity, and This Film Is Not Yet Rated, though the latter may be more appropriate for an Intermission.
While listening to one of the Anniversary shows recently, one of you proposed an episode covering This Movie Is Not Yet Rated (a great doc looking into the MPAA). Has that been shelved, and if so - perhaps the subject fits best for an Intermission episode. There's certainly plenty to discuss, from the process itself to the accusations of corruption.
In the past two Intermissions, you guys have referenced the "Bake-Off" when talking about Special Effects awards. Would there be enough content there to discuss for an episode?
Doctor Submarine wrote:I think that Rise of the Planet of the Apes works really well. I didn't find it unbelievable that Franco got away with keeping his pet chimp. It's not exactly illegal to have one. Giving his dad the drug was unethical to be sure, but as this movie shows us, the corporation he works for cares less about ethicality and legality than for results that can make them money. Come on, corporations do that every day.
My main issue with the corporation was that they weren't just evil, they were actively in pursuit of the end of the human race. What group of scientists would design a virus that is, by design, impossible to defeat by the body's own defense systems - then proceed to jump immediately to animal trials. Even worse, nobody seems to notice the fat guy was exposed to the stuff- even after he starts coughing up blood. Also, how is it that a group of experts in the field can be completely unaware that one of the chimps was not just pregnant, but had given birth over night?
While it only hit DVD recently (or maybe it hasn't even hit that yet) - I'd really like to see a commentary for Rise of The Planet of the Apes. It got rave reviews and is building Oscar buzz (mainly for Serkis' performance as Ceasar) - but I absolutely despised the thing. It's my personal Terra Nova - just recently, I filled a good 20 minute car ride with a one-sided rant of how much I loathed it. (My main complaints were logical inaccuracies, and some of the incredibly corny moments placed in an otherwise realistic movie (A goddamn ape rides a horse. Then proceeds to talk.)
Doctor Submarine wrote:Paranormal Activity 2 is really underrated, IMO. Some of the scares are more subtle, and they really did their best to keep the concept fresh, instead of just rehashing the first film.
Agreed. I've been completely shocked with how well they've treated the franchise. After the first one's out-of-nowhere success, I assumed we'd get a big-budget rehash sequel with no dignity. But they've managed 2 great prequels that add to the series mythos, and actually create realistic situations for "Found Footage" style movies.
Not to mention, I've yet to have more fun in a theater than a midnight showing of a Paranormal Activity movie.
Not sure if it's been suggested at any point in this thread, but Paranormal Activity might be an interesting episode - possibly Paranormal Activity 2, since it seems like the rare big-budget sequel to low-budget sleeper hit that actually works. Plus, a chance to talk about found-footage movies, how viral marketing effects the indie movie industry, and more.
