Re: Suggest a movie!
I think Tremors should be on somebodies list...

Spaghetti westerns. I don't care which one, just do one.
How about a Social Network/Last Airbender double-feature?
The Last Airbender is streaming on Netflix, so if there's a peak of masochism in the Down In Front lair that's an option.

You know I don't know how much there is to say about The Dollars Trilogy, but those would be some great movies for DIF to do.
also Primer.

I propose a double-feature: Brick and Winter's Bone. Call it the "new noir."

So, a good movie and a bad movie! I like Brick, but Winter's Bone was repetitive and dull. But both of them are great DiF movies.

Hell, given it's so short (one of the main problems, although time to do the story right wouldn't have helped if the cut Kioshi Warrior scenes are any clue) do one of the first season episodes as part of the movie commentary.
If they did The Last Airbender, I would love to hear them talk about why the long takes work in movies like Children of Men and fail completely in a movie like Airbender. Also, slow motion is the worst thing you could do to an action sequence. Every frame of that movie looks good on it's own. It's when you put them all together that you have a problem. And the writing is awful.
I vote Zodiac / Collateral for a neo-noir discussion. Zodiac has the traditional noir stuff going on. Moody lighting, gritty realistic tone, detective story, etc. Collateral is, in my opinion, a noir film that tries to break as many of the typical noir rules as possible while still remaining noir. It still has a mystery element to it, it still has a guy who unwittingly gets involved in solving some kind of crime or series of murders and it's obviously dark, gritty and realistic.
EDIT - replace Zodiac with LA Confidential.

I'd go for that. I thought Zodiac was well-made but completely forgettable, so I wouldn't have much to say. But LA Confidential and Collateral, while neither is without flaws, are well worth discussion.
What is it with Trey and Fincher? I think he's one of the best directors working today.
Fincher's got plenty of craft, but I don't love every movie he's made. Same goes for Spielberg and Scorcese and Zemeckis and Cameron and Wright and Darabont and...
But I will admit Fincher's been more miss than hit with me. I liked Social Network, Seven, and (in retrospect if not at the time) Alien 3. The rest, not so much. *
To be honest, the uncritical Fincher Love that younguns seem to have is a head-scratcher to me - it's definitely a generational thing. Fincher the man is the same age as me, but for whatever reason his work seems most beloved by twenty-somethings. There's a doctoral thesis waiting to be written on this someday.
*yes, my miss list includes Fight Club. *gasp*
I'm so stoked for his adaptation of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. You could say I was tres stoked.

On what? JEALOUSY? Ha! No, seriously, I agree.
Fincher seems very competent but always going for something that doesn't quite resonate with me.
And LA Confidential was terrific but just a bit too arch to be great. It was like the late-90s swing dancers who went a little too far playing dress-up.
Collateral is a classic case of a psychological thriller that falls apart in the third act because the writer was trying too hard to tie everything up with a bow.
Yeah, pretty much agree with all the above. Which is why they'd make potentially good DIF's, there's stuff to talk about.
But when I say Zodiac was forgettable, I mean it quite literally. I saw Zodiac, it was well-made and kept my interest throughout. But there's not a single thing about it that I can remember now, other than the basic facts of the Zodiac case that I knew anyway.
In fairness to Mr. Fincher, in my previous post I forgot he also directed Panic Room, which I would put in my "hit" category.

Finally, someone who agrees with me about that movie! Everyone I talk to about it seems to hate it, which baffles me.
He also made Benjamin Button, which I like a lot.

I'm cautiously enthusiastic, but having read the book and seen the original Swedish film, I have my doubts.
Edit: I may just have to catch the Sherlock Holms sequel just for Noomi Rapace though.

Not al of Fincher's movies hit with me, but when they do, it hits hard. I actually really like Zodiac, and I think its a better film than people give it credit for. I can't wait for GWTDT, only because I think it cant be any worse than the sweedish versions. I love the book, and already FIncher's trailer makes me think he got it more than his european counterparts.
Im on record as saying Brick was one of my favorite movies of the 2000's, and Teague fuckign HATES it for reasons I've never fully understood. In my mind, that's prime DiF material. Haven't seen Winter's Bone, but I've been meaning to check it out.
I forgot about panic room as well. Also a 'hit' with me.
Speaking of forgotten films starring Jodie Foster, anyone see The Brave One? I liked it. Pretty odd movie, tho.

I liked The Brave One too. I like Jodie Foster. She's everything Hollywood isn't
The Brave One is a interesting twist on the Death Wish formula. I don't think it works quite as well but it's enjoyable, almost entirely because of Jodi Foster's strong performance.
I think it's just about time for an Iron Man 2 commentary. Maybe pair that with Last Airbender.

A double bill of two awful films is nobodies idea of a good way to spend the weekend. Now a Coen brothers marathon? That I may take a day off work to watch, provided we all sing Man of Constant Sorrow when watching OBWAT.
Until further notice, Ryan already did our Iron Man 2 review
