SO much better!

If PTA had followed the guidance of Smash Mouth, he would have an Oscar to his name.

Also, for best current American directors, Scorsese can still bring it when he's motivated with good material. Even the pilot to Boardwalk Empire felt like more of a movie than a lot of shit released in theaters during 2010.

I'm surprised by the reaction to Elysium.  I saw it for the first time this weekend.  Seemed pretty watchable to me.  Despicable Me 2 was pretty good too.  As far as my top five, I'm gonna wait til I see the films that get released Christmas Day.  I've already seen the Hobbit 2 and fell asleep at the beginning because it was so boring...  I'd really love to get a WAYDM commentary of Elysium once the potter flicks are done.

To be honest I was hoping for so much with Elysium. I loved District 9, along with most other people I guess.

Elysium seems like someone took District 9 and Oblivion and just mashed them together. It just so happens to also be the director who actually made District 9.

Every visual element looks familiar, the story contains so few elements and as a result the movie seems really empty to me. The relationship of the two protagonists is not explored at all, yet the emotional core and resolution of the movie hinges on it. They just give us the framing device of them having known each other as kids, as if that automatically adds another dimension to their current-time interactions.

The villain is basically just written as an over-the-top villain, in a derivative, "we-gotta-have-one-of-these" way (reminds me of Die Hard 5 where the villain eats carrots and does a little dance at one point, they don't even care enough about the character to give them a proper character foundation, a la Hans Gruber, but instead just quickly throw a few distinct/eccentric traits at them and call it a day).

I may have reached a point where most movies that come out remind me of others I've seen, and so the novelty has worn off and it needs to work harder to impress.

I personally loved the hell out of Elysium. It didn't have the deepest characters by any means but that shit almost never bothers me if the plot, setting, and action entertain me; which they all did. Also, Sharlto Copley ruled as Kruger, just like he rules with everything he does.

How did everyone else feel about Frozen, if anyone saw it? I just saw it, and was pleasantly surprised at how strong the female characters were. And the animation was gorgeous. Music wasn't so spectacular in most cases, but "Let It Go" is a lock for Best Original Song at the Oscars.

If that song wins anything, I'm going to projectile cry acid tears at the nearest completely defenseless woodland creature.

Yeah, I don't get the hoopla about that song either.  Haven't seen the movie but I saw that clip that everyone was going gaga over.  Song was okay, but what threw me was that the character animation was kinda sub-par.

Again, haven't seen the whole movie, so maybe that scene works better in context.

I like Elysium. I was watching it thinking 'people think this is bad?' It's not fantastic or anything but I had fun with it.

Well, I have it at 5/10 on IMDb, so basically middle of the road, slightly on the bad side of average. But considering the talent involved I expected something alot more inspired and passionate. It felt like Blomkamp just did a director-for-hire project. I don't care if it exists or not, which is pretty much the worst case of "average" movie there is.

Re: What were your TOP 5 MOVIES of 2013?

You guys are being wayyyyyyyyyy too lenient on Elysium. That movie is a fucking abomination. Worse than Into Darkness and Man of Steel combined.

Re: What were your TOP 5 MOVIES of 2013?

If it was directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, I might say "you know what, that was watchable, at least the man is trying".

For Blomkamp to be given over 100 million budget to make an original R-rated sci-fi action movie (first time since, what, Matrix 2/3?) with 2 bankable stars, and to proceed to thoroughly waste that opportunity on a generic, forgettable, blockbuster is just tragic. "You are the chosen one" flashbacks, a story that doesn't make much sense, really sloppy and uninteresting action (outside of like 1-2 cool shots). It's not terrible, but considering this is the kind of project that never gets funded anymore, it's incredibly disappointing, since it could be another decade before a studio commits 100 mil to an R-rated action movie again.

Fair enough. The thing I don't understand is someone calling it outright terrible or even the worst movie they saw in 2013. I just cannot comprehend how anyone could think it was among the worst films of the year, considering this year featured:

Now You See Me
After Earth
A Good Day to Die Hard
Olympus Has Fallen
R.I.P.D.
Paranoia
Getaway
(GO AWAY GETAWAY, STAY AWAY GETAWAY)
The Mortal Instruments
Grown Ups 2
Movie 43
Scary Movie 5
A Haunted House
The Starving Games

Granted, I only saw one off that list, but from the trailers alone for the rest, there is no fucking way they were better than Elysium.

I'd link to my review but it's in the Reviews section of the forum so check it out if you want. Suffice to say that nothing in the movie makes a lick of sense, not to mention the terrible performances and world building.

He was okay, but his character was dumb and nothing he did had any motivation.

Also, Jodie Foster and William Fichtner were fucking AWFUL.

Yeah, I checked out of your review when you said this:

Doctor Submarine wrote:

I have to mention the performances, because they are an embarrassment to the craft of acting. Even people who we traditionally think of as “bad actors” have never turned in the sorts of performances that William Fichtner and Jodie Foster give us here.
