The Cove was mentioned a couple times, but nobody said what they thought about it (other than that it was a whole other type of movie). I had some issues when I saw it, things I think they didn't need to do to get the point across.
Eddie, I love the fuck out of you presenting. Do that more - point them the way you want them to go, and nudge them along to drive discussion with questions.
Does anyone else want to hang out with Eddie and drink beer at this point?
Woodstock doc and Gimmie Shelter would be interesting.
A friend of mine asked me if I wanted to go to the Gathering of the Juggalos to film the 'counterculture' of today, and the thought of being in that place with no easy way to get out was so scary.
After watching Gimmie Shelter and Woodstock, I was like...fuck marry kill...
I'm still not sure.
I think:
Marry: Woodstock (boring, but won't hit me and Janis Joplin is so cool)
Fuck: Altamont (because Mick Jagger)
Kill: Gathering of the Juggalos (no Mick Jagger and scary drugs)
Also there are issues around the Maysles brothers access, and the split screen Woodstock stuff that I would love to hear you guys talk about.
Guys, thanks for the positive feedback both here, and through emails and whatnot. We have the next two tepisodes planned in terms of content, if not recording date.
Ep 3: STORIES WE TELL and OVERNIGHT (with Trey and whoever else)
Ep 4: DECEPTIVE PRACTICES and THE IMPOSTER (definitely with Teague and also possibly Trey).
Ep 5: WEST OF MEMPHIS with my fight watching buddy, Geoff LaTulippe. Still have to find a second film with that one.
You're friends with Geoff LaTulippe? I follow him on Twitter! He's great, very smart.
They're gonna seem like they have nothing to do with each other, and plot wise, they probably don't. But paired together, they surprisingly cover similar ground.
You should definitely do one on documentaries about filmmaking. The Five Obstructions would be a great subject.
Docs about the industry tend to be a bit too inside baseball for me. I watch docs because I have questions about subjects, and I want those questions explored if not answered. I don't want to be lectured about a subject, I want to be told a story.
I was thinking more about filmmaking as an art form, and less as an industry. That's why I mentioned The Five Obstructions, which I think is a fascinating exploration of what it means to make a film.
Blackfish is on CNN... Now (EST)...
The IDA (Inernational Documentary Association) has announced it's nominees for the 2013 IDA Awards:
ACT OF KILLING
BLACKFISH
STORIES WE TELL
LET THE FIRE BURN
THE SQUARE
Those were for the Best Feature category. We'll do Stories We Tell in an upcoming episode as it's really something extraordinary.
They're both uniquely awesome. I could see myself revisiting Stories We Tell more often than AoK, but that takes away nothing from either films awesomeness.
American Movie could be ok with the movie making ones. Or you could pair American Movie with Grizzly Man and do a "People who probably should be eaten by bears" subject.
Dunno if it's against the format you're going for, but Herzog probably deserves a whole episode.
I don't envision us being a slave to the format forever. I think you could make the argument for several director centric episodes. For now, however, I want to keep the focus on individual films.
