Topic: There are only 7 sf movies coming out this year

3 of which are remakes. I miss you so much, 1982.

Yeah, it is a lean year, but these things go in cycles. You'll get 20 one year and 5 the next.

Just as a counterpoint, not sure on the quality of these, but a good look at the year ahead.

I classify sci-fi/fantasy as a common genre.

Re: There are only 7 sf movies coming out this year

I tend to agree, I feel that at their core they are using a setting that is out of our normal day-to-day, and using that to tell a story that either entertains or contrasts something in our normal lives in a way that we can approach.

If that entails swords, sorcery & dragons or starships, robots & aliens it gets to the same thing in the end, in a generality sort of way.

Growing up one of the authors that I enjoyed was Piers Anthony, who across different books, or even within the same books mixed the two quite entertainingly. So that to my young mind conflated the two into a mash of a genre, and I never really broke out of that, even while enjoying properties that solidly settled in one side or the other.

The fact they're always shelved together in the book store also helps link them for young readers smile

I went through my own Piers Anthony phase, even writing two letters (got two postcard replies, the second snarky just because I said not to write a 4th Phaze book ^_^). A lot of his stuff I've gone back to doesn't stand up, but a couple of the early SF books could make interesting movies.

Oh, I'll definitely agree that some of his stuff really doesn't hold up to more adult scrutiny, but they really are great entry level books to a style of book that some kids just don't get.
And while I do love that the Harry Potter books kind of kicked off a resurgence of young adult fiction that was decent, that has seemed to slide downhill recently with the Twilight books.
I would much rather give a young child one of Piers Anthony's books, even with some of the odd sexuality, than any of the Twilight books, if I wanted to encourage them to read more and expand their horizons.

He's easy to read, which I agree makes him a good entry writer. I bailed on him when Anthonology (the short story collection) came out as he finally came off as a total jerk, but I was going that way anyways.

The interesting thing about Piers Anthony was he could write a very fun trilogy, but insisted on doing 5 or 7 books per series and book 4 is where things would go down hill.

(It would be hilarious for someone to try and adapt Bio of a Space Tyrant. Forget the sex, it's just so... well, even as a teen I called BS on the politics ^_^)
