Topic: The Big One: Lily In the Wind (Crits needed)

So this is it, the big one, the project I've been working on for the last 6 months, signifying the end of my tort- education at Vancouver Film School.

It's pretty much completed, I've got about 3 days left, so I thought I'd throw it open to you guys to see if there's any small stuff I've completed missed or just become blind to.

(No sound yet, and color grading has not been fixed yet)

So have at it boys.

Re: The Big One: Lily In the Wind (Crits needed)

A few things stick out to me. The color grading doesn't match from the CG to the live action, but you already mentioned it wasn't finished. Another thing that bugs me is the lighting on the landing shot. With the light source in the shot the way it is, the door section of the ship shouldn't be receiving any direct light at all. That said, I doubt too many other people will be bugged by that. The only other crit I can offer is that the smoke clouds in the landing shots (both the hovering up to the bridge and the actual landing) look too saturated to me.

Minor things, really. Are you gonna post it up after you get the sound in there? I was making sound effects for it in my head while I watched it tongue

Awesome short, man. I like how you do the breakdown visualization.

Re: The Big One: Lily In the Wind (Crits needed)

Wait, pausing at the breakdown. Is this really supposed to be a demo reel, or is it some intermediate not-a-reel-,not-a-short thing? If it's supposed to be a reel, I'd suggest a lot of editing and...demo-reel-ifying. If it's the middle thing, well, cool. I guess.

What's it for?

Re: The Big One: Lily In the Wind (Crits needed)

Ugh, I hate answering this one...it's technically my demo reel, but I've been treating it more like a short film. The reason that I have the breakdowns in here is that they're required for in order for me to graduate. The most likely course of action for me is to post the short on it's own, for my own gratification, then edit it down to a proper demo reel style, showcasing the actual VFX shots and my work, with breakdowns, and that's what will be my actual "demo reel".

So yeah...

@Squiggly: I'll definitely be throwing it up once I get everything properly finalized with sound. And thanks smile

One niggle that bothered me is the graffiti on the columns.  It kind of pops me out of the world.  I like the editing with the knife gag though.  Overall looks good, well done.  Looking forward to the next iteration.

Yeah, unfortunately those are the Vancouver Hydro "No Power" symbols that they have on all the support structures under the bridge we were shooting at, and we couldn't shoot the other direction. Although I might go in tomorrow and see how hard they'd be to paint out.

Re: The Big One: Lily In the Wind (Crits needed)

I don't know shit about VFX, but storytelling-wise, we're very close on the hatch during landing but then tilt down from it before it opens to reveal anything. And we're too close to see the landing gear touchdown, so that shot doesn't make sense to me.

Overall, this has a great Sergio Leone feel. And Ron Selmour is amazing. Good get.

Warning: I'm probably rewriting this post as you read it.

Holy crap!  I was thinking as I was watching it "That guy looks like one of the guards in Chronicles of Riddick...*" but I figured you had just gotten fellow / local students.

*not sure if I should be proud of this or not.

Re: The Big One: Lily In the Wind (Crits needed)

@Zarban: Yeah, the ending of that shot is probably my least favorite bit of the entire thing, I had a really cool concept when I started, but I suppose you wouldn't believe me if I said studio intervention screwed me over, but the same general concept happened. Although it will make more sense once the sound is in there, we did manage to salvage it a bit.

And yeah, Ron is awesome, in his off time he's a security dude at my campus, and I only found out he was an actor after (and because) SuckerPunch came out. tongue
