Topic: Next-level shit.

Yeah. As in, no matter where you are, stream any episode of DIF completely instantly from your Droid (or iPhone, soon, if Holden doesn't die somehow). Now taking suggestions for features, and if all goes well, we'll roll out a beta in the next week or two.

Also, you're banned if you don't include a pimp in your post.

Here's what it looks like, up close and personal. Thoughts?

Somehow, simply pimp is insufficient. Is there a superpimp icon?

Update! Current status of app: semi-functional. Here's a current screencap.

Re: Next-level shit.

Any way to integrate hyperlinks, à la an enhanced episode, for devices that can multitask, perhaps as an optional upgrade or "Pro" app, or is the notion just to keep it as a streaming player?

Re: Next-level shit.

I actually pondered that early on. I can support hyperlinks, I think, but I'm pretty sure it would be a terrible mess to integrate the enhanced files in. How does that work, anyway? Still could be possible to get that working somewhere down the line.

Re: Next-level shit.

Well, I author them in Garageband, but I wasn't necessarily suggesting integrating the links in that fashion.  I have no experience in programing applications, so I don't know if it's even possible to emulate the enhanced podcast experience in an app.  I should think however, that it would be possible to include at least a list of links, rather like what I was doing with the show notes prior to the enhanced episodes.

If it's possible to support hyperlink integration that'd be great.  Maybe it'd be possible to include links from the old school show notes.  Again, I don't know what sort of options are available for this sort of thing, or exactly how much time you want to put into it.  I can tell you that putting together an episode on my end can take anywhere from 4-12 hours, but if you're just using the material I've already researched it should just be a matter of plugging it in.

Not sure if the notion is to charge folks for the streaming app, but I'd say that if we were to go to the trouble of offering an upgraded app with links and whatever else, that could be worth a buck or two.

At any rate, the links in the show notes and enhanced episodes are there; feel free to integrate them or not at your discretion, and if I can be of any help lemme know.

Keep that pimp ing coming!

Re: Next-level shit.

Show notes shouldn't be very difficult to do. If you've got a few minutes sometime, whip up a quick mock-up of what you'd want it to look like and message it to me, and maybe we can work on how to do something more interactive later.

Re: Next-level shit.

I've ignored the new generation of portable devices for awhile now (may get an iPad eventually), but is there some reason podcasts now have their own app instead of just using some generic podcast app? I wouldn't listen to many now if that was the case...

Re: Next-level shit.

Bummer. Apparently the seeking function on streaming files is broken (and has been since 1.6). Guess people don't get to fast forward for a while. Edit: This is an Android only thing, for now.

I hate to bust your balls, but I've always been able to stream DiF(or any other podcast for that matter) on my iPhone using iTunes tongue

And yeah, I'm able to do it wherever. I download them anyway, but still.

This brings up an interesting question, though. What would you guys like to see in the app that would sway you to using it more than a generic podcast player? Stuff like show notes? I dunno, pitch something at me.

I got interviewed by an NPR producer researching the fan-made commentary scene to see what we kids were up to, and he asked if anyone had done a commentary for a porn movie. I had to answer that no one had ever done a commentary for any movie that was even remotely racy. Honestly, Road House got the most oohs and ahhs I've heard... and that was for Swayze.

I say, until porn penetrates the fan commentary field, we aren't a legitimate sub-culture.

Re: Next-level shit.

Well, obviously The Room doesn't count as racy smile I'm surprised nobody has done fan commentaries for Flesh Gordon or the musical Alice in Wonderland, though.

I think his point was that he can use the iTunes app on his iPhone to download the podcast file just like from iTunes on his PC, not that he can access the site from his phone.

I'm actually not sure. Show notes come in the file that I can download through iTunes on my phone, and just playing the file with my music player rather than in a streaming app runs down my battery less. I'm not sure what you could add. The only apps I really use are ones that don't require connecting to the Internet, or are Twitter or IM clients.

Re: Next-level shit.

We should do a serious Down in Front on a porn. Hm.

Anyway, something that could be cool would be the ability to, from the app, listening at a certain point you want to chime in on, click a link that takes you to the forum, to the right thread, and starts your post with a timecode indicating where you were in the episode when you posted. (And go nuts and have that timecode be a link to that point in the file, or a point fifteen seconds earlier for context, that'll stream in a pop-up window so folks can hear what you're talking about.)

So I'm listening to The Blob, fifteen minutes and ten seconds in, and Teague says something really wrong and kind of racist. You click the "comment on this" button, and it loads up a post reply form to the Blob thread with

Referring to 00:00:15:10

at the very top.
