Re: First Teaser for Nolan's Interstellar

Yeah, I'm not a fan of this teaser. If you're not going to give us ANYTHING about the movie, then what's the point?

The Inception teaser was great because it showed us some really intriguing images (mainly the hallway fight), it had that great "Your mind is the scene of the crime" tagline, and it otherwise gave us nothing about the story. That's a teaser. This is just a statement of the movie's theme, some archival news footage and ten seconds of Matthew McConaughey driving a pickup truck. Yawn.

Re: First Teaser for Nolan's Interstellar

I think this is outstanding. Remember when Teaser trailers could convey the theme of the movie without giving away the whole plot?

Also, this speaks so hard to me thematically. If this is the tone/theme of the movie, how we've lost our exploratory spirit as a society and need to get it back, it could really be an important film culturally.

Bring it Nolan

Re: First Teaser for Nolan's Interstellar

Here's what I think, Inception is not a movie about ideas. Don't get me wrong, there are ideas in it that are pretty cool, but for the most part, it is about really really fucking cool set pieces and how they fit together. How do you cut a teaser for that? You show really brief glimpses of those kickass set pieces and make people go "How the hell do those fit together?!"

Intersteller (And granted, I only have the teaser to go off of, so this could be totally out in left field) feels like it's ABOUT needed to get our exploration back, it feels like a movie that is going to make everyone in the theater jump up at the end and go FUCK YES LETS GO TO SPACE BITCHES!! And that is exactly what this teaser does. At least for me it did, it built up that emotion, it built up the idea that we want, no, need, to explore, to push boundaries, and reminds me that we've stopped. And then it told me, now we're doing that again (in this movie). And it felt awesome, it made me go yes, I want to go exploring again!!

The simple one line plot encapsulation in the newspaper doesn't do that. It has no emotion, it doesn't make me feel it, it doesn't make me want to go jump out of my seat and into a rocket. This teaser does.

So yes, I think it's an absolutely perfect teaser for what I (hope) this movie will be.

Re: First Teaser for Nolan's Interstellar

Think you're reading too much into it. That being said, if nothing else, you should give it points for doing something new as a piece of marketing. That Inception teaser you mentioned was the start of the "BRAWWWWM" trend in trailers we've been suffering through for like 3 years since everyone started copying it.

It would be so, so, easy for this teaser to have that same approach "Nolan"...brawm...space ship shot....brawm...."fate of mankind"...brawm....November 2014.

But no, they go completely 180 the other direction and do something original. Market based on the theme, and try to uplift the audience with a positive message instead of bludgeoning them with noise and images.

Re: First Teaser for Nolan's Interstellar

I was literally running out the door as I was typing that and it came out way more pretentious than I intended.

I don't mean to say "ideas" as in "it's about ideeeaaaas maan." but that it has one very central idea or message that it really wants to convey to the audience. In this case we need to get off our asses and get out into the universe again.

I (personally) don't think Inception (or Alien even) has anything like that. They're both very action-y set piece driven (alien less so, but still true) films, so teasing them by literally teasing those set pieces is the obvious way to go for those. But there isn't some ...thing... that the film as a whole is trying to tell the audience. (um... don't go to deep into your own subconscious, cause like, shit gets real man. Aliens that want to eat you are bad, k guyz.) Whereas Interstellar feels like something that is more about instilling that sense of "get up and go" into the audience as main driving force of the film itself.

Granted, if that's not what the film is about, then fuck me, but just going off of what he's given us so far, that's the movie he's (at least telling us) he's making. I don't think it's fair to call out a teaser trailer as a bad teaser, for a movie you know almost nothing about, simply because it isn't telling you what those others one did. Especially when this movie may be EXACTLY what this teaser is telling us it is.

Isn't that the point of a teaser? For whoever's in control to give you a small insight into what the movie will be like? All we have to go on is what he's giving us. For all you know, the stuff you think should be in a teaser may not even exist in the movie. Whether that's a good or a bad thing you can decide for yourself, but that doesn't mean it's a bad teaser for THIS MOVIE.

EDIT: On second read, i have no idea if this even makes it clearer, but ehh, I'm too tired to care.

Re: First Teaser for Nolan's Interstellar

I felt as excited about space as Brian does for a few minutes after watching it and that's never happened before.  I guess that's saying something.  But I don't need a trailer to want to see Chris Nolan's next project anyway, so I guess I don't have to analyze it further.

Re: First Teaser for Nolan's Interstellar

Am hearing this might be one of the last IMAX movies projected in 65mm before they switch to their all-digital laser projection system. So glad Nolan is still out there fighting against the death of film.

Also, I am beyond stoked to see what he does with the space stuff. I would almost bet money he does model shots for at least some of the exteriors, which'll be awesome to see in 2014.

It stars Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway.

The only way I want to watch either of those two in space is if they're asphyxiating.

That was a good one, but personally I like him even more in U-571.

Or Matthew McConaughey's inspiring performance in the film Failure to Launch.

So much material right there.
