Re: Suggest a movie!

Hee hee.

To be clear, my issue is more the length of what we're talking about, not the content.

Re: Suggest a movie!

I love all three movies and would be down to tag team it.  Fun idea, we could have one dedicated panelist with a copy of the book sort of following along.  It would be fun to note things like the battle for Helms Deep is like a page long, while the description of the different elven dialects is several pages worth of materials.  Also, LOTR as a franchise means a lot to nerd types so 9 hours of film could give opportunity to everyone talking about Tolkein's influence on individual cast members.  Im sure we could be creative about it.

Also, I totally want to do Psycho.

Re: Suggest a movie!

I see the point re: length on the one hand, but on the other hand if we expect that we'll be doing the movies eventually anyway, one way or another we're going to wind up talking about the movies for 12+ hours. I just think the potential for the ensuing of hijinks is greater when we give the ultimate epic movies the ultimate epic commentary.

Re: Suggest a movie!

See, at the beginning of the marathon, we'd have, like a fellowship, but then over time the fellowship would fracture and diverge - but then at the very end we'd all come back together, and jump up and down on the couch in celebration.   And then I'll take the boat into the west.

Do it. Do it do it do it.

I'm not kidding. Do this. This eleven-hour marathon … do it.

And live-stream the whole thing.

My hand to god, I will be there for the whole thing.

I would love an epic LotR marathon and would totally be there for the entire live show. Imagine all those fantastic digressions you would get lost in.

Please do it.

After Armageddon, I think some controls would be needed in the drinks department for something like this. A designated commentator maybe, who would stay sober and could toss anybody having a bit too much off of the couch smile

I think LOTR would be a blast.

I also would like to suggest Pitch Black, Chronicles of Riddick, and Dune.

Re: Suggest a movie!

Count me in for an epic live show of Lord of the Rings. No kidding, I'd be there for the whole thing. Massive fan of the books. The movies are very good, excellent even, but they're not perfect. The question you posed for The Watchmen - could we have seen a better adaptation? - could be a good subject to talk about at some point in the 12 hours (my answer is an emphatic yes).

There would quite a bit to talk about aside from changes, the merits of the story, and what we're seeing at any given moment: the ensemble cast and what they went on to do, whether Peter Jackson is a good director or not (a recent greatest directors list placed in the top ten of all time), the visual effects and how they hold up today, the huge undertaking of making three movies at the same time, the impact on culture and the genre, etc.

Re: Suggest a movie!

I think there's a difference between a good director and a director who makes good movies. You can be one and not the other.

I know Peter Jackson pulled off the most ambitious movie-making effort I've ever heard of. That counts for a lot in my book.

On the subject of the special effects, I think we'll all probably agree that the compositing holds up much less well than the in-camera effects. But I heard something very interesting the other day that I hadn't thought of. The Hobbit is going to be filmed in stereo. That means forced perspective won't work.

Re: Suggest a movie!

I've been meaning to do a LOTR marathon for some time, so count me in for the live show (should probably start pimping it a few weeks out so folks know which day to set aside).

Re: Suggest a movie!

If you do this, I'll be there for the whole thing.

Re: Suggest a movie!

Has anyone that would be on the episode read all of the books recently enough to have comprehensive recall of them?

If not, we'd need to call in some sort of expert.

Bwahaha.

We're going to want to set the date a few months in advance so we can figure out schedules and hype it up, and anyone who wants to read the books to prepare (I probably will do so) will have ample warning.

QFWTF? I thought you were going to do this around Christmas. I don't have time to wait months. My affections are fickle.
