Re: Suggest a movie!
They Live is fun. I think Prince of Darkness is the real hidden John Carptenter jem, but I doubt they've seen it.

Prince of Darkness is great, very underrated. I like They Live too and I think In The Mouth Of Madness is Carpenter's last good film.
MOUTH OF MADNESS is great, the only movie I've seen so far to really capture Lovecraft's vibe.
PRINCE OF DARKNESS feels a little like a Lovecraft short story, too -- though that's damning it with faint praise, as Lovecraft's stories are meandering weirdnesses that don't lend themselves well to movies in themselves. They can form the seeds of inspiration for more developed stuff, though. They should've left THE THING alone and seen what they could make of POD instead.
Although come to think of it, I think the good modern version of POD might be CONSTANTINE.
THEY LIVE is mostly just silly.
Listened to the Ghostbusters commentary again and are you guys ever going to do The Frighteners?

Hmm... If you assume the humans can ever win, yes I love Prince of Darkness for the whole idea that God exists in the anti-mater side of things, and thus is evil to us. Puts a nice spin on things. Music is good, too.
Carpenter considers The Thing, Prince of Darkness, and Mouth of Madness to form a sort of trilogy, so maybe you guys should do all three.

Well, yes. Like I said, it's fun. It's the more pop-corny of the two, to be sure.

It's his Apocolypse Trilogy. They've already done one, so it should be easy to do the other two, good idea Invid
Would you guys like to do a They Live commentary!
Sure, but I want you to put on these sunglasses first...

If i'm not mistaken a They Live remake is coming out and I remember reading somewhere that they might ditch the sunglasses part.
And The Thing remake or sequel or prequel whatever the fuck it is. I assume is just going to be another stupid remake flop like basically everything else these days.
They Live is exactly the type of movie it makes sense to remake: a small film with an idea that wasn't explored completely and which a new writer/director can really play with. It still will probably suck, but you never know
The situation might change if and when you do the LOTR trilogy, but looking back you've done lots of sci-fi and hardly anything in the historical or fantasy genres (except Master and Commander). I'd love to see you guys tackle Willow or Excalibur.
In the same vein, Kingdom Of Heaven could be fun.

I'm not against a remake (though I think most are pointless) but how else is Nada going to know there are aliens kicking about? I think it needs the sunglasses. Are they trying to make a serious version of a fun tongue-in-cheek movie?

It's a prequel of what happened in the Norwegian camp ( that just so happens to have Americans in it) It's still going to be called 'The Thing', which is a bit fucking pointless, if you ask me.

It might be a prequel but it looks like a shot for shot remake with Kurt Russell replaced by... Lucy McClane from Live Free or Die Hard? Wow, yeah that sounds really bad. But i'll wait till i see it before calling it crap. Not a lot of sf movie coming out these days.
Also, everyone knows the Alien prequels are dead, right?

Yup, good riddance. It could never have lived up to the expectations placed upon it. I'm now actually genuinely interested in seeing this Prometheus film. I'm already seeing it as the third part of Ridley's thematic dark sci-fi trilogy.

You're a better man than me, I got no desire to see it

There haven't been many fantasy movies until recently. as each serious attempt like those you mention haven't really done well. Pre-CGI fantasy just tended to look... cheap, in a way SF didn't. So I agree they should be tackled, to see what did work (Excalibur) and didn't (Willow).
I also second the more historical stuff. Glory, A Bridge Too Far... Birth of a Nation
Birth of a Nation? That movie may have been groundbreaking in its time as a directorial tour-de-force, but those lessons have been learned and applied ever since. Meanwhile, its treatment of its subject is just jaw-droppingly, horrendously, brain-bogglingly idiotic.
At first it's hilarious. And then you stop and think: this fucker really bought into this shit. And a whole bunch of other fuckers rebuilt the KKK based on its inspiration.
Also, everyone knows the Alien prequels are dead, right?
Well anything Alien related will be better then AVPR!
Actually, after mentioning Birth of a Nation I realized it would be better to have them do an earlier film, so we can see the changes that happened. For example, 1913's The Last Days of Pompeii. It's so early in film technique that they put up a title card saying what's happening, then show that scene which the audience can now put in context.
If there's a genre of film that really needs more commentaries, it's these old classics.
I've seen Birth of a Nation exactly once, in film school. (Every semester BOAN alternated with Intolerance as the "required viewing DW Griffith classic", and thus I've never seen Intolerance.)
It was impressive on the groundbreaking first-time-anybody-ever-did-that level, but yeah, it's a bit of a grind to sit through. And certainly gets uncomfortable at the finale, when you find yourself thinking "Gee, I hope the noble Klansmen get there before those evil darkies rape the white women".
So for me, the best commentary there could ever be for BOAN has already been done - when the lights went up after that one viewing, the instructor got up in front of the class and said, "And now you have watched Birth of a Nation, which means you never have to watch it again."
Did the instructor continue, "... unless you're me!" and break down sobbing? I have the DVD, but really need a commentary of some sort for it as I've found I can't get through it otherwise
please don't make me watch Kingdom of Heaven again... I've wasted 6 hours of my life on that film, and that's enough. You haven't done Bladerunner yet. You need to do that one.
You guys haven't tackled anything Kurosawa yet. You guys should do Seven Samurai! Talk about some of the techniques used in that film like the axial cut.
"And now you have watched Birth of a Nation, which means you never have to watch it again."
Right. I'm not especially sorry I watched it, and it really would be interesting to hear a film scholar explain its historical significance, but it's nothing I'd wish on any unsuspecting soul. It's just a historical curiosity.
Triumph of the Will is another one. Maybe one of these days I'll get around to watching it—one of these days when I'm feeling really, really cheerful and optimistic.
triumph of the will..? isn't that the Eisenstein propaganda flick?
Nevermind, googled it. Hitler Nazi praganda instead...
