Re: Suggest a movie!

Edit: Damn, I really need to write faster.  Oh well, here are my thoughts anyway.

In, totally.  Posting that got me thinking too.  I actually had a much more basic idea that involved a killer who uses flesh eating insects to help eliminate the evidence of his crimes, but that's as far as I had gotten.

I would love to ground these buggers in some sort of plausible scientific basis.  In terms of evolution, what could an insect develop in the wild to keep itself from getting eaten, and ensure the survival of it's young, which could be taken advantage of by human nature.

Typically an insect will develop some sort of toxic defense, either in it's own chemistry or in the form of a bite or sting, to dissuade predators from attacking and eating them.  Ok, let's turn that on it's head, and solve the procreation puzzle at the same time.  What if it is the sting of the female (which delivers the eggs into the host) that has a sedative / euphoric side effect.  Get stung by a female and you get a nice high, and after a while the eggs just break down in the host if they're not fertilized.  Male stings on the other hand are painful, and if you've already been stung by a female, that's when you're in trouble.

I like the idea that the bugs slowly drive you crazy as they eat your brain; I'd be nice to have a set of symptoms that lead up to that: headache, blurred vision, hearing things.  Heck you could go full on and say they're smelling things, or suddenly develop a taste for rotting wood or something.  Basically anything that hangs a lantern on how far along a given infected person is.  If it were me writing this thing, I'd have my protagonist infected in act 3, trying to defeat the infection, while trying to defeat the antagonist.  I even like the idea that the protagonist defeats the antagonist but the only way to defeat the infection is to sacrifice themselves.

Re: Suggest a movie!

None of that's unprecedented in the animal kingdom. There are species of toad in the genus Bufo that have psychotropic venom. The endoparasitoid fungus Cordyceps unilateralis alters the behavior of its host before the host dies from the infection. And Toxoplasma gondii is a protozoan that's believed to be linked to a variety of behavior-affecting organic brain disorders. It's not much of a leap to say that a parasitic infection could cause pica-like symptoms.

(Pro tip: If you're squeamish, or just don't feel like being plagued by nightmares for several weeks, it might be best not to google any of the shit I just said.)

Re: Suggest a movie!

What if, as they eat your brain, they start to take control over you (also not unprecedented). If you started going crazy, then your body started doing things against your will, that would be fucking terrifying. Also, then you end up with zombies who really do want to eat your brain and can only be taken down with a headshot for logical reasons.

Oh, and by the way, since it apparently was missed for the second time, (I tried in the live chat, Teague left the room. I tried in this thread, you all started talking about Alice in Wonderland porn), YOU GUYS SHOULD TOTALLY DO 'CLOSE ENCOUNTERS'.

Re: Suggest a movie!

I have to admit, after reading (iirc) James Randi's take on the film and those involved it's a bit harder to sit back and just enjoy it. It's still good and well done, but there's now an undercurrent of "ah, they're serious about the UFO stuff... okey dokey..."

I don't recall why I don't like it, I didn't like it when I saw it growing up, then years later I revisited it to see if my opinion had changed and it hadn't, and that was so long ago I don't remember why I felt that way then.

Do you have a link, i've never heard that. I always took the odd casting of François Truffaut to mean his character was the only "enlightened" person in the movie, and that Spielberg believed.

Re: Suggest a movie!

Spielberg did believe, at the time. Since then he's changed his position. I don't have the exact quote but it's on the CLOSE ENCOUNTERS Blu-Ray BTS documentary, and he says something very much akin to Randi's own sentiments, to the effect of:

If this were a real phenomenon that was only rarely caught because stills and motion picture cameras were rarely owned by non-professionals, then as more people got cameras we should see a matching increase in the amount of photographic and video evidence. But instead we've seen just the opposite. Nowadays everyone has a camera and most people have video cameras, and we almost never see UFO imagery anymore. As a result, though he would like to, Spielberg no longer believes that we are being visited.

Re: Suggest a movie!

Close Encounters is a great, great movie. It focuses on character and has a strong but fairly subtle theme about communication.

Remember that, at the time it was made, Sagan was telling everybody that, with untold billions of stars, there must be millions of life-sustaining planets, and dozens of intelligent cultures. And with I Love Lucy beaming out in all directions for twenty years, we had to have caught their attention. We walked on the moon, man. All things seemed possible.

ET, on the other hand, is a load of wet bunk and drivel.

Warning: I'm probably rewriting this post as you read it.

Re: Suggest a movie!

I saw it at the New Bev not too long ago (no one ever comes to see old movies with me), but it was the extended cut or some such. I was amazed to see all these additional scenes from Truffuat's and the government's point of view that completely destroys the suspense of the gas mask scene and AND show the INSIDE of the spaceship at the end. Amazed I tell you, amazed.

Re: Suggest a movie!

I like "Close Encounters" a lot because it's the anti-Spielberg film. I mean, think about it. Roy becomes so obsessed with the lights in the sky and his visions of Devil's Tower that be loses his family … and whoom. They're just gone from the story, man, never to be seen or heard from again.

I love the fact that a guy who's made a hell of a career exploring the theme of family and how it's the most important thing in life turned around and made a movie the theme of which can be summed up as "Disregard females, acquire aliens."

Another good choise would be Frank Miller's The Spirit. It is a weird mix of slapstick and trashy noir, yet it somehow works, surprisingly (I was expecting a giant failure).

It is a remarkable anomaly. Every movie the man has made has "absent father" issues and yet Close Encounters has a father actively abandoning his family as a completely incidental and uncommented on aspect of the plot.

Re: Suggest a movie!

Spielberg now says that the reason for Roy abandoning his family was because he didn't understand the implications, not having had a family of his own. He now says that, were he to make the movie today, Roy would never have done that.

However, I think it works very well dramatically. Roy's whole arc is about obsession, and him leaving his family without notice is a great way to address it. The movie ignores the family, just like Roy does. Roy is the protagonist, and if the audience feels bad about him leaving his family, they can't be happy about Roy making it to Devil's Tower.

Now that you guys did Monsters, will you do Skyline?  Another low budget sci-fi movie financed completely by its directors.

Every time I see a thing for this movie, I think:

And that the movie would probably be better if it was just all about:

Also, if they make a sequel, it should be titled Skyline: GTR.

Re: Suggest a movie!

Okay, it's a comedy - but a bittersweet one. How about the cult movie SLC Punk? It features a compelling performance by Matthew Lillard as a punk rocker in mid 80s Salt Lake City, Utah. It's an independent film that breaks the fourth wall in various ways. Plus it has Michael Goorjian looking like Deniro in Taxi Driver as well as Til Schweiger as an intense drug dealer. There are some serious themes - so much so that many don't regard this as a comedy at all.

P.S. Just in case someone has submitted this movie as an option I apologize. I looked for a search feature I promise.
