Re: Last movie you watched

Or just listen to the Douglas Adam audiobooks.

Still some of the best audiobooks I've ever heard.

(I've never actually listened to the original radio series, and have never had an issue with the tone or voices of the book. Douglas Adams is actually kind of a good author surprisingly so he manages to get away with not requiring outside listening to get it. Depends on the person I guess *shrug*.)

You don't HAVE to listen to the show, naturally. However, it's like only reading the Star Trek novelizations without ever having seen the TV shows.

Trey recommended this one, and it just popped up on Netflix. Dry, but very comprehensive. I liked it a lot.

Also, the narrator sounds exactly like a serial killer explaining his worldview. This is definitely a man with a manifesto prepared for the media. He's fucking intense. I could have sworn this movie would end with him putting it all together and concluding he must quicken the unrighteous to let the Earth be as new.

I'm pretty sure Mr. Plinkett is a parody of him, come to think of it. I think the guy from RedLetterMedia saw this documentary and a lightbulb went off. There are moments where it's uncanny.

Anyway. I enjoyed it on its merits, it's fascinating, but I kept cracking up at how much fucking contempt this guy has for, like, poor characters living in unreasonably expensive houses. Or whatever. He'll be goin' along just fine, and then all of a sudden a movie in the '70s had too many white people in it and it's like he's convincing himself to bring a rifle to a hospital.

Absolutely brilliant movie, eh?

This is probably my favorite second favorite Studio Ghibli movie, but only because Whisper of the Heart has nostalgia bonus points. I'm so sad that this movie is going to be Takahata's last, but he's definitely going out on a high note. I've always thought that Kaguya-hime was kind of a weird, off-putting story, but Takahata managed to create a faithful adaptation that was also compelling and interesting.

Roger Ebert called G-Force "pleasant" and "inoffensive". While I agree that those cute guinea pigs are pleasant to the eye, the lack of a good story can offend a discerning moviegoer. Just like Yogi Bear, this flick utterly fails in the story department. You can skip it, unless you're a die-hard furry fan.

(Disclaimer: I watched it dubbed, so I didn't have the opportunity to hear the original voice performances.)

Guuggghhh

Depression porn, starring Sadness Everdeen; though I personally never felt depressed, because I don't really care about Katniss, because she's not a human being. I can't relate to her at all. In fact, Haymitch and Finnick may well be the only humans in this movie. So I just felt bored, and frustrated. There were maybe five minutes in the movie where Katniss was not the focal point, and those were the best minutes.

  Show
The shaky-cam shots were overdone and felt too deliberate.
I understand why they added the cute little cat storyline, but I didn't buy the heart from J-Law. She literally saved a cat and I couldn't care less about Katniss.

The break-in scene at the end was pretty cool. I was into it, until Katniss dragged herself back to center stage.

Autómata (2014) - 6/10 (6.1)

http://pmcvariety.files.wordpress.com/2014/09/automata-movie-review-san-sebastian-film-festival.jpg?w=670&h=377&crop=1

Interesting Sci-Fi film, although it mainly goes over themes similar to those in "I, Robot", regarding AI intelligence and robotic self-awareness and "breaking the 3 laws". Also has some Blade Runner-esque future environments, however it never feels as real or gritty (the digital photography is too clean and polished).
While derivative, it's quite well made and well acted, and surprisingly minimalist and atmospheric. Some would probably call it boring though.

The November Man (2014) - 4/10 (6.3)

http://static01.nyt.com/images/2014/08/27/arts/november/november-master675.jpg

New Pierce Brosnan action film. Wasn't very good unfortunately. Some cringeworthy performances, very thin-feeling plot, a jumpy, incoherent plot with diffuse and underdeveloped character relationships. Like a Bourne movie it involves Secret Agencies and multiple countries and continents, but it never felt cohesive or engaging to me.
At times they will explain the importance of something after it happens, which robs you of a feeling of involvement as things are happening, only learning of their significance afterwards, which is just stupid storytelling.

Before The Devil Knows You're Dead (2007) - 7/10 (7.3)

http://www.theepochtimes.com/news_images/highres/2008-1-10-before-the-devil-knows-you're-dead-6.jpg

Sidney Lumets last film. Excellent performances in a severely depressing film. 2 brothers decide to rob a jewelry store, but it goes wrong, causing harm to people close to them. Then it's just downhill from there.
Sad, depressed people in shitty situations, nothing spruced up to be more palatable. You will probably feel really shitty watching this. Which is a testament to the acting and direction, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Ethan Hawke, among others.

Interstellar (2014) - 7/10 (9.0)

The Babadook (2014) - 5/10 (7.0)

http://imageserver.moviepilot.com/jennifer-kent-babadook-2014-05-06-004-review-the-babadook-2014.png?width=1198&height=504

Pretty decent low-budget horror flick. Mother and son live alone and begin to be troubled by a demon. Familiar ingredients.
Supposedly an allegory of depression and psychological trauma of having lost someone, battling internal demons as it were.
Personally I liked the dramatic aspects and acting, which is why I didn't like the horror aspect of it. Because it's supposed to be a parallel to battling internal demons, the actual demon in the film is not developed at all. No backstory, nothing to get you involved. You don't know whats at stake, why you should fear the demon (is it going to kill them, possess them, slightly annoy them?). It's creaking doors and a black, floaty ghost, but the visuals on their own aren't scary, you've seen them before.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014) - 4/10 (6.2)

https://cbsdetroit.files.wordpress.com/2014/08/ninja-turtles2.jpg

Pointless, harmless, unengaging. Sloppy 2-dimensional writing. Bleh.

The Shining (1980) - 9/10 (8.5)

http://www.cinematheia.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/0001.jpg

Hadn't actually seen "The Shining" in many years, so watched it again with my current brain.
Really superb film, so precise, so atmospheric and Cold. It doesn't try to give you any emotional support, neither in cinematography, nor music (there's no "family theme" musical queue here, the most respite you can hope for is that the music will completely stop droning for a while). The blood elevator shot happens in the first 10 minutes, which I had completely forgot. It doesn't get much happier after that.

A Million Ways to Die in the West (2014) - 4/10 (6.2)

http://schmoesknow.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/o-A-MILLION-WAYS-TO-DIE-IN-THE-WEST-TRAILER-facebook.jpg

Someone wrote a Family Guy episode where Brian the dog goes back in time to the old West, and is forced to endure that era with a modern sensibility and knowledge of those times. Then they stretched that script out to a nearly 2 hour movie, removed the time travelling aspect but kept the modern sensibilities in the main character.
Really lazy feeling movie. Not as horrible as I was expecting, but even then didn't illicit many laughs. They just repeat Family Guy style humor, but it does not work in a live action setting. The clash in style is just too big at times. Throw in a standard, really clunky and unmotivated love story, and a completely pointless, disconnected bad guy who is there simply because the story needs to have a bad guy, and you have a mess with no sense of real focus or sense of purpose.

Finally I got this over with. It's as though a great weight has been lifted from my heart.

Breaking Dawn, Part 2 is not much different from the previous installments. Aside from two fairly good jokes, nothing interesting happens until the big climax, which

SPOILER Show
turns out to be an illusion.

The baby comes straight from the Uncanny Valley and will probably give me nightmares. At least this time they acknowledged (sort of) that

SPOILER Show
inter-species pedophilia
is wrong.

And then there's Michael Sheen... He seems to be the only person having fun in this movie. The others are just dull.

The budget was $120 million. Where the fuck did all this money go?

The cast, most likely. Assuming everyone had a three film contract, extending it to four gave everyone room to cash in. Don't blame them.

Filling out the gaps in my Tony Scott filmography, I finally watched Deja Vu.
http://www.movpins.com/big/MV5BMjUwMTMxMzQzNV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMjgyNDYyMw/still-of-paula-patton-in-deja-vu-(2006).jpg

I'd say it's surprisingly really good and entertaining, but it's no longer surprising as I've realized that almost every single Tony Scott movie delivers, looks great, and is fun to watch. In retrospect he had an amazingly consistent career,  and I regret not appreciating him more while he was around.

Also, this might be one of the most progressive major blockbusters in terms of casting. Not only are the male and female leads both black, but the scientist techie who explains how time-travel works is a black woman. And it's an original self-contained sci-fi story on top of all that. How nice.

And if nothing else, it's worth watching for one of the most creative car chases in a long time.

  Show
the girl having clairvoyance
, and there is something about the ending that is off to me; but I can't put my finger on it.

I finally watched this last night, and as for the ending...

  Show
It feels like they were non-committal about what sort of ending they wanted. There's like a hint of hope, with the girl & boy seeing the bear, as if to say that life can happen now and the human race will be ok, but at the same time the only humans we see surviving the crash are a single 17 yr old girl and a 5 yr old boy. You can't repopulate with that.

However, by adding that hint of hope (and the way it's shot feels like it's supposed to be hopeful) doesn't mesh with the idea that the human race is doomed because there's no logical way for it to start with 2 people...unless there was a religious allegory going on that was totally not conveyed well and also would feel out of place.

They either needed to show more people surviving somehow (maybe have other people climbing out of the train in the background) to say "humans can survive and will come back" -- hopeful ending. Or they should have just killed everyone in the crash and then revealed the life outside the train, showing that we enslaved and destroyed ourselves when we didn't have to -- depressing ending.

Instead they sort of flirted with both.

As for actual "issues" with it...

  Show
The girl being clairvoyant makes no sense and seems pointless other than to have her magically find the children. Just odd that they set this thing up and then did nothing with it.

Why would Wilford want Curtis to take over the train in the first place? Why not the woman that clearly knew everything already and was obviously on board with the way things worked?

I liked that the one guard was super bad ass and killed a whole bunch of the heroes, but did he have to be a Terminator? I mean, really.

Minsu's plan to escape the train didn't seem to make any sense. Why couldn't he just unlock the gate to the outside like he could the others? Why not use the explosives to STOP the train in the engine room itself, instead of just opening a door that would then require you to jump out of a speeding train? If he didn't want to open the engine car door, where did he think they were going to go when he set that thing off in the first place? Also, bullets were able to penetrate the windows of the hot-tub car...why not use the explosives there?

All in all, it was an enjoyable romp with some interesting themes. I certainly see why many called it a "video game movie" and that's both a compliment and exactly right. Despite some of the fridge logic (hah!) issues, I still had a great time watching it and will probably do so again at some point.

Sidenote: I feel like 'Snowpiercer' and 'Dredd' would make an awesome "video game style" double-feature movie night.
