Re: Random Movie Talk That Probably Doesn't Deserve Its Own Thread

Yeah, it has been getting positive reviews so far. Empire magazine gave it 3 (out of 5 ) stars which is still a recommendation.

It may get hurt because of the similarities to The Raid (although Dredd went into production first).

Re: Random Movie Talk That Probably Doesn't Deserve Its Own Thread

That's a profoundly terrible idea. Found Footage movies usually work on the strength of having an unknown entity as the antagonist. We already know what all these dinosaurs look like, so there's literally no benefit to doing it found-footage (and any action/chase scenes will be garbage).

I still am waiting for a good found-footage breaking into Area 51 movie. Wasn't Paranormal Activity guy making that, what happened to that project?

Yup. Also, it's a British film, which is a bit odd.

Anyway, I still like the poster even if the film looks really shite.

Found Footage works when there is SOME mystery. In one of the first, Cannibal Holocaust, three people are missing but the TV station they were working for finds their cameras. Thinking to make a TV special, they look at the footage... nope, that's not going on TV smile

Re: Random Movie Talk That Probably Doesn't Deserve Its Own Thread

Stuff I've watched recently (without commentaries)....

Jimmy Stewart in Harvey. Not at all what I thought it would be. Rather gentle comedy that sometimes rises to screwball levels.

Tucker and Dale vs Evil. Very funny. Not quite a Shaun of the Dead-level subversion of the genre, but a lot of fun.

Three Amigos. This was with the 9-y-os. They loved it, and holy crap is that a fun movie. Just about perfect. We gave up on the dull and song-poor Pete's Dragon after 20 minutes (I'd never seen it) and put on The Addams Family. They weren't sure what to make of that for a little while but really got into it by the end.

Ep 1 and 2 of Mission: Impossible. I'd only seen maybe 1 ep previously in syndication (it's now all available on Amazon Streaming, free with Prime). It's really good, but Steven Hill (later replaced by Peter Graves) plays it very flat, reportedly at the demand of the creator.

Also having fun with Sherlock series 2.

Re: Random Movie Talk That Probably Doesn't Deserve Its Own Thread

It's ok, it's better than Sorbo's Kull film and frankly there's far too few of this type of movie out there for me to exclude it totally. However, its principal failing is that it is boring. It's devoid of excitement, tension, peril and stakes.

Instead, we get like an extended scene with Conan and a thief companion entering the villain's fortress, only to find that the villain and his entourage have left the fortress already. Which, not coincidentally also happens in Pathfinder, also by the same director, as we greeted with a long 'chase' scene in a cave which doesn't really go anywhere.

Worse, when the villain does succeed at the end, he doesn't really become any more powerful and is defeated by Conan even whilst being supposedly 'all powerful', leaving you with the feeling that the entire film is pretty pointless.

Imagination will often carry us to worlds that never were. But without it we go nowhere. - Carl Sagan

The Conan remake was excruciatingly unimaginative.

Who thought Rose McGowan as a Marilyn Manson reject with Freddy Krueger fingers was a good idea? Am I suppose to be intimidated by this?

Re: Random Movie Talk That Probably Doesn't Deserve Its Own Thread

What annoys me is the sex scene with Rachel Nichols having a body double. Now, I know body doubles are not new but I do think they are sometimes pointless. If your lead actress doesn't want to show her breasts, the character doesn't need to show her breasts. It was only a sex scene that added nothing to the plot therefore seeing the character's breasts was totally unnecessary.

Now, if it was Rachel Nichols' breasts, I wouldn't be moaning big_smile

That movie was a gigantic pile of garbage. One of the worst things I've ever sat through, and a total desecration of everything that's good about the original Conan.

Re: Random Movie Talk That Probably Doesn't Deserve Its Own Thread

I just watched Unstoppable with Denzel Washington and Chris Pine. I think Trey had said that he liked it pretty well, given that it's a Tony Scott piece about a couple of guys trying to stop a runaway train.

I liked it myself quite a bit, altho the family drama stuff and privileged-rookie-vs-underappreciated-veteran stuff was a bit heavy handed. In fact, I thought it would have been better if Chris Pine's character had a happy marriage, since that would have made his decision to risk his life tougher.

The film has gotten really mixed reactions on IMDb. There's even more vitriol than usual about Scott's shooting style (shake and noise), and it IS distracting sometimes, but I didn't hate it. There IS one point that is a pretty serious plot screw-up (the helicopter insertion attempt), but it was exciting enough to watch that it didn't bother me.

I liked the fact that it is basically a railroad procedural—like a police procedural but with train jargon in place of cop jargon. And the technical aspects (borrowed mostly from a real runaway train incident) are much better than most movies of its type.

Re: Random Movie Talk That Probably Doesn't Deserve Its Own Thread

I just watched Sanjuro for the first time. I love Kurosawa's other stuff that I've seen, and this was no different. It lagged a bit in the middle, but by the end it's a great mix of gritty adventure and humor. Toshiro Mifune ranks alongside Clint Eastwood and Sam Jackson for sheer awesomeness in the badass-with-a-smirk category, and probably ahead of Harrison Ford and Kurt Russell.

For anyone who hasn't explored Kurosawa but who has a passing interest in anime, you will find his stuff very accessible. Every Star Wars fan should at least see The Hidden Fortress.

The adaptation of Year One was disappointing, but yeah, I hope this is good. WB keeps making them change the cast for each direct to video movie, so they can have stunt casting. I'm not sure Conroy would be right for this particular Batman, though. Not that I wouldn't want to hear his take on it smile

Re: Random Movie Talk That Probably Doesn't Deserve Its Own Thread

Tony Scott is on my personal black-list after what he did to Taking of Pelham 1 2 3. That is one of my all time favorite 70s movies, and he managed to completely fuck up every aspect of it, while also making it borderline unwatchable with his editing, stupid stop-motion over-crank bullshit, and ugly-ass color-grading.

Crimson Tide is still great though, I feel like after that movie something just happened to the man, like he started taking lots of drugs, or just flat out lost his mind or something. Everything of his before Crimson Tide tends to be watchable, with Crimson Tide as the peak before a sharp nosedive in quality.
