Hey Eddie, can you post a link to that article, or was it from an offline source? It sounds like a very interesting read.

It was from the Comic-Con panel, here's a page with some other tidbits from it.

I know James Gunn also said his chemistry with Pratt was another big factor in his casting.

Honestly, I am happy to hear that Bautista took more classes and that people seem to be taking this movie seriously, even if I am not. The whole raccoon thing is probably what throws me the most, but I suppose I should be used to weird stuff in comics by now...

It could be crazy amazing or crazy awful but either way it will be crazy...

This is a character you will cry over because you care about him so much.

I think a talking Raccoon in a sci-fi/comedy should be fine.

Re: Guardians of the Galaxy

The whole point of Guardians of the Galaxy (the one the movies based on, there was another team that used the name before) was they took all these forgotten, weird and some outright stupid characters and brought them all together, reinventing them in this big space war against unstoppable giant bugs. It was really neat to see all these weird characters from different corners of the galaxy and Marvel's publishing history come together and given a new spin.

It's almost baffling it's getting a movie, not only because of how weird the characters are, but these aren't tried and true comic "classics" like Thor, Spider-man or even Iron Man who was at least well known to comic readers. The iteration they're making the film out of came about in 2008 and was eventually cancelled due to lack of readership, so as a fan of the books, the fact we're even getting a movie is a fever dream come true.

I thought Avengers did that pretty well, and it certainly could be classified as sci-fi, sort of smile

It might sound weird, but I think that's in line with what I said earlier. This movie seems like a total rebuke of the "post-post-modern ironic detachment" school of genre storytelling. Everything about it is totally sincere, which is actually way more subversive than being all sarcastic about its own genre. And that's pretty much what Gunn says in that quote. This movie isn't going to apologize for being ridiculous. It's going to totally own it, and if you don't like that then fuck off. We're at the point right now where being genuine is actually way more surprising than being...well, surprising.

As far as the characters of the movie and the film crew caring about the movie? Yes, they do.

About them giving any sort of care or thought towards what other people think of their film? They don't give one tiny, little...

Like I said before, this movie will be incredible or it will be an explosive disaster.

If a modern tentpole, fucking MARVEL movie can actually get away with doing that, holy frack I don't care how good the movie actually is, that's a win in my book.

I suppose so...

I just don't see how that is relevant or changes the film industry at all, tent pole or no tent pole.

Re: Guardians of the Galaxy

I didn't say it was going to change the industry or anything like that. But you seriously can't see filmmakers actually being allowed to make the movie they want regardless of what the audience thinks (read: what the studio execs think audiences want/playing to every human-being-with-cash-they-can-fork-over possible, ala basically every tentpole these days) isn't a good thing? It might just be one, but so what? It still happened, somehow they managed to get by the system and make the movie they wanted to make.

That's fucking awesome.

/this is still of course assuming that's actually whats going on, and the movie hasn't actually been whitewashed for a mass audience appeal (Although judging by what I've seen so far, I'd say it hasn't)

Maybe...

But, I've seen it before and it just doesn't go well for the film. It makes me sad, and still doesn't invest me in GotG but I hope this is different.

Also, Marvel is making Ant Man, and other hero movies, so I think the system is just rolling the dice on this one. If it isn't good, well, move on type of a thing.

Man, I'm in a cynical mood tonight.

Re: Guardians of the Galaxy

To be fair, Marvel hasn't done a female-led film yet either.

To be fairer, Marvel's featured Black Widow really prominently in the past few years, she apparently has a very big role in the new Captain America, and I'd be shocked if she didn't get a solo film in Phase 3.

And as long as we're on that subject, notice how Gamora's outfit in the poster isn't ridiculously revealing and her pose (while kinda goofy) isn't explicitly showing off her body. Well, maybe that's there to an extent. But no more so with her than with Drax. Same thing in the trailer. There's an obligatory sexy shot of her back, but it comes immediately after a similarly sexy shot of Star-Lord. And while there's obviously a big difference between the two (as was discussed at length in the thread for the Avengers commentary) it's a sign that Gamora isn't there for sex appeal any more than the male leads are. Which is refreshing. It's not like the shot of what's-her-face in the Star Trek Into Darkness trailer, which was literally, "HERE'S A WOMAN IN HER UNDERWEAR, COME SEE THIS MOVIE NERDS."
