Re: Prometheus

Empire UK gave this 3/5 stars while Total Film gave it 4/5 stars.

I will hopefully be seeing it next week, probably Thursday, it'll be cheaper then. Damn Jubilee!

Re: Prometheus

Yeah, I bet he pees in this one, too. Possibly trying to make it his hallmark? Arnold's got "I'll be back", Johnny Depp has cornered the market on weirdo-but-likable characters, Shia has legal ownership of the word "no" in several states. Fassbender pees on camera.

Re: Prometheus

Just got back from seeing it and I gotta say, I was fairly disappointed. It had some interesting ideas, but overall it just didn't deliver for me.

Re: Prometheus

I'm keeping an open mind till I see it, since I'm seeing reviews completely all over the board. It's tough because everyone brings such differing expectations into it so it's hard to say if people are disliking it for things I would actually enjoy. I'm seeing people criticizing it for being too horrorish and not being enough like 2001, I'm also seeing the opposite, with people complaining it's too slow-paced with not enough horror.
I shall see in a week, but that kind of response gives me hope, because it tells me the movie at least isn't generic but is taking some chances and doing some things outside the box.
Better to be divisive than being generic but universally liked a la the Avengers.

Re: Prometheus

I am so stoked for this.  My only question is "To 3D or not to 3D?"  I'm thinking not, but I'm sure I'll wind up seeing it more than once anyway, so maybe once each.

Re: Prometheus

If I can I'm definitely going 2D. I got stuck with 3d when I went to the Avengers and it, well,...it was lame.

Re: Prometheus

New user. Depending on the theatre quality, definitely see the 3D version if possible. I saw it in Sweden opening night, and I was very worried, as one might be in these days of such difference in 3d quality between films. It is filmed in 3D, and the 3D is basically only used in a natural way. No gimmicks at all. It provides a basic natural depth which helps to give the spaceship etc alot of atmosphere. Also the brightness was very acceptable. The lighting was considered and so there was no situations where you are staring at a murky hazy mess. Also for the design elements in the film, the 3d giving them some depth really gives them added realism.

So as long as the 3D in your theatre can show good 3d well, definitely see this one in 3D. It was a flawless experience for what it is, the only variable I suppose might be if certain projectors have problems outputting enough brightness, my theatre might have cranked that up. Still, quite a well lit film for being in dark environments.

Welcome,TechNoir.  Did you used to post on the Empire forums by any chance? smile

Re: Prometheus

Nope, did not. I think anyone who has seen Terminator has at some point tried this as a username on forums though. wink Atleast that is my experience trying to keep this username consistent through various forums and failing miserably most of the time.

Indeed, it is a popular username. There were a couple of variations of it on Empire, too.

I sincerely welcome you to the forums anyway smile

Re: Prometheus

Was forced to see stereo/3D presentation, it contributed nothing really. Certainly less in your face gimmicky but didn't use it for story telling purposes at all.

Gave good sense of tunnels, and creatures but I felt the space ships didn't stand up as well as Avatar. Generally I found the design good but execution ho hum. Sort of left me feeling I had seen excellent in-game cinematics. Ridley's uncompromising desing sense semmed all dried up, and that sound design? OMG, I was being flogged to death with obvious sound ques right from the start.

Someone tell me where I can go to complain about story... don't want to spoiler anything but, oh dear that story.  hmm

Re: Prometheus

Oh I forgot, I haven't experienced this before. The audience was all 40year old nerds, and when I came out the next audience were the same, all feverishly surfing smart phones to kill time. Just like I was during the ads. Felt weird, definately not a broad appeal but it may have been the wrong time of day (morning) for general audience.

Re: Prometheus

Saw the midnight show.  Audience seemed to be mostly Full Sail / UCF (college) kids.  I may catch it again tomorrow, in 3D this time, just for S&G.  It's pretty much what the creators have been saying the whole time; trading in the same sort of territory as Alien, but exploring different areas.  It is certainly not a "prequel;" I can see at least a couple more films coming before we get to Alien, but it is definitely the same universe, and it is exploring events that take place before we get to LV-426.

Surprisingly, there were a couple moments of humor, mostly involving Idris Elba's character of the Captain, one lol moment in particular.  The film did remembered it was an Alien movie though; there were a couple moments there where I was genuinely tensing up in fear watching what was happening.  I can honestly say that hasn't happened in a very long time.

About all I feel comfortable saying about the story, is that the question of "why did you tell me that story movie?" is very much on my mind.  It sets out as a group looking for answers, but all the film does is raise more questions.  I think that was actually kind of the point, but after one screening, I can't really be sure.

There was a spoilers thread for Avengers, maybe start a new thread? Either that or just use spoiler tags.
