A new one? Or am I missing something?

No, not a review. It's a commentary track.

Tysto made something like this ages ago. Wonder what the difference is.

Listening to it now. It's a completely new recording, not an edited/rearranged version of his review. I'm 20 minutes in and he's somehow managed to pretty much not cover any of the same ground and offer new and hilarious insights. He meanders off the path when he doesn't have anything too screen-specific to say, but gets back to it pretty quick and at any rate it's better than dead air.

He just blew my mind pointing out that Jar-Jar, despite being the most hated character in this film, is also the only one who actually has a hero's journey character arc.

This is great! Maybe he'll do commentaries for all the prequels and for Avatar and other stuff! Hurray!  lol

Warning: I'm probably rewriting this post as you read it.

The stream got screwy on my phone and I can't buy the file until I get home, so I haven't heard the last ten minutes, but yeah, this was outstanding. Started to get some stretches of dead air toward the end as he ran out of things to say, but I too hope Plinkett gets into the commentary game more.

Re: Mr. Plinkett's Phantom Menace Commentary

Really? I was pretty underwhelmed. I didn't find it particularly funny, or really particularly insightful, or...anything. It was just sort of Plinkett-y.

Then again, I'm only 20 minutes in. I keep getting sick of it and pausing and coming back. Maybe he gets somewhere eventually, but so far he's just whined about how Boss Nass doesn't look like Jar Jar.

If you go by the Plinkett Test, Jar-Jar is also the most well defined character in the first movie. He's got a personality. He's got a couple of dimensions to him. You can say multiple things about his character beyond just "Annoying". He's the best character in the first movie, and possibly the best character in the prequel series. It's funny, in a way, that many of the side characters in those movies are much better defined and relatable than the main characters are. That little flying dude on Tatooine. He's a better character than Obi-Wan.

It's amazing, really. It's like the more effort Lucas puts into writing a character, the flatter they get, until you end up with stoic, boring cardboard people standing around while all these colorful and interesting characters are popping up for a scene or two and vanishing.
