I heard it was good, but it also seems EXTREMELY unlikely to get a release in Japan, although occasionally the theater tyrants here surprise me. My best hope is that it's popularity holds out long enough that I can see it at a random theater in central Florida when I come home in late December. That's not too much of a stretch, right?
Not a stretch at all. It's an Oscar contender so it'll probably get a wide release around that time, if not earlier.
Ya, I think it's doing 500 theaters next weekend, and the theater averages are holding strong so far, so it wouldn't surprise me if it hit 2000 theaters before its run is out. Theater last night was packed, and unlike a lot of awards-circuit movies, this one is very funny and re-watchable, not bleak and depressing.
I hope it sweeps the Oscars the way Gravity did last year. Cinematography is a lock already, I'm 100% certain on that. I would say Keaton is almost a lock for Best Actor, Emma Stone has a shot at Best Supporting, and it oughta be a frontrunner for Best Director and Best Picture. And unlike Gravity, it actually does sorta have a shot at the Screenplay award as well.
Just got back. Enjoyed greatly. Not sure I'd call any aspect a "lock" for an award - too early in the season for that. But definitely a contender for directing, writing, cinematography, and multiple acting nominations. Go. Go now.
I really enjoyed it, and I'm quite keen to go watch it again at the end of the week.
I think it's gonna be a real Marmite film, but I'd recommend it on the grounds that 1) it has its own unique flavour, and 2) you'll still be thinking about it well after you've seen it.
I just really hope the writers don't come right out and explain what they were going for, because as it is right now, it's open to a lot of delicious layers of interpretation.
Ah, so it's one of those "if we don't explain anything, people will think it's deep" movies? ![]()
Well, nothing about it particularly needs "explanation" - the story itself is pretty straightforward, really. But the movie goes back and forth between reality and Keaton's inner life and thoughts - what's debatable is how much of what we see is actually happening.
The makers probably could answer that question definitively, but you can also make your own interpretation without "missing" anything.
I think the ending is perfect, it's the good kind of open to interpretation, where I leave smiling.
So, I'm kinda curious about how people felt about the argument/discussion that Riggan has with the theatre critic in the bar.
Do you think we were we "supposed" to pick a "side" of that argument? Because I agreed with both of them.
I don't know Doc's opinion. I just know, increasingly, that Doc is actually an evil fuck.
