Topic: Last Action Hero

Some stuff referenced in this episode, first up PorridgeGun posted this link to the fantastic Empire article in another thread, and we refer to it a lot.

Also, I referred to some funny observation about Arnold that I couldn't quite place, turns out it's a Bill Burr bit. Watch it, it's a minute long and hilarious.

"Hi, May, thanks for stopping by."

"My pleasure. I've got Mr. Schwarzenegger's suede jacket wardrobe from the movie—"

"Yeah, about that. Here's what we need from Wardrobe. We need you to fit Mr. Schwarzenegger for a velvet Australian schoolboy's uniform."

"A... velvet—"

"Australian schoolboy's uniform. You know, just like Angus Young wears. The lead guitarist."

"He wears a schoolboy uniform? In public?"

"Sure, sure. Where have you been for the last 30 years?"

"Does Mr. Schwarzenegger know—?"

"It was his idea."

"Oh. Okay. I'll— I guess I'll— Uh."

"Here's Angus's tailor's phone number."

Warning: I'm probably rewriting this post as you read it.

Re: Last Action Hero

Dorkman mentioned JCVD as the other action-hero spoofing their persona movie. I will re-iterate that it's well worth seeking out as a fascinating meta Van Damme film, where he basically says he's done nothing of value with his life, fucked up multiple opportunities by being arrogant and into drugs, and feels he hasn't earned any of the acclaim he's gotten. It's actually quite original, I can't really think of any other actor who's stepped back and made such a critical film deconstructing their own life and career.

Re: Last Action Hero

The latest on McT and his prison sentence.  It's a pretty messed up situation all around.

Re: Last Action Hero

This episode blew my mind... I've known this movie for almost 20 years, but somehow I never noticed it's Ian McKellen (Ugh... I mean SIR Ian McKellen).

Re: Last Action Hero

Am I wrong or did you compare me to Bill Burr during the great drunk dial conversation a few nights ago?

Also, let me get this straight, you all did a movie with John McTiernan, Shane Black and Arnie, and it wasn't my beloved? You tease. Anyway, I saw Last Action Hero in theaters when I was a kid. Loved it then, like it now.

Teague apparently just refuses to watch that movie.

Re: Last Action Hero

I feel obligated to point out that while McTiernan made legendary action films in the 80s and 90s, these are the two most recent features on his résumé.

Maybe some time away from society isn't such a bad thing...

Re: Last Action Hero

In the grand scheme of things Basic was not that bad. There is a good story to be told within the script. I wish I could take a crack at a rewrite, because I believe it had potential.

Yeah, in the LAH commentary when I said comedy isn't really McT's thing... that's exactly the moment I was thinking of.

However, there's just that and one or two other blatant fan service moments in the whole movie - the rest is solid.

Re: Last Action Hero

Indeed. It's nowhere near as ridiculous as The Running Man from the same year. Any action star could play Dutch in Predator, it just so happens to be Arnie (who has to have a couple of quips in there for good measure). The film is a great action-Sci-Fi flick rather than an Arnie film.

Actually, The Running Man and Predator would be a good comparison piece. Both from the same year, both at opposite ends of the Arnie/action spectrum.

Re: Last Action Hero

The thing that's great about Predator (aside from EVERYTHING), is that its the only time Arnie has been up against a bad guy that's so formidable that you as the audience are thinking he's completely outmatched and is going to die. Terminator 2 is the only other example of this, but in that one he's a robot, so the "pain" aspect is less impactful. In this he's just a guy, and gets the absolute shit beat out of him, which is super rare and makes him an under-dog in the movie.

But ya, Last Action Hero. I actually really, really like that Title. If you think about it, it was weirdly prescient, as the 80s style of action movie would be completely dead in less than 10 years, completely replaced by comic book movies and Michael Bay destructo-flicks.

Polish translators decided that it means "The Hero Of The Last Action". But what can you expect from people who turned Dirty Dancing into Swirling Sex?

Re: Last Action Hero

I just rewatched Time After Time (mentioned in the episode). The premise is great, but it was filmed like a cheap TV movie. You can definitely see its influence on the Star Trek IV script (co-written by Nick Meyer).

Five years later some lousy hack ripped off the "murderer from another time" premise and we got The Terminator wink Harlan Ellison sued him and got some cash, maybe Nick Meyer should've tried that too.

(BTW, The Terminator was initially called Electronic Murderer in Poland).

Yeah, when it comes to marketing American film, Poland is... well, they're something special.

Most of those custom-made posters come from the communist era (and it really was a "special" time big_smile ). Now we usually get the generic posters.
