Topic: Great Moments in Hanging a Lantern!

Back to the Future II:

Marty: "You're not gonna believe this. We have to go back to 1955"
Doc: "I don't believe it!"
Marty: "That's right, Doc. November 12th, 1955."
Doc: "Unbelievable that Old Biff could've chosen that particular date. It could mean that that point in time inherently contains some sort of cosmic significance, almost as if it were the temporal junction point of the entire space-time continuum. On the other hand, it could just be an amazing coincidence."

Raiders of the Lost Ark:

Indiana: Meet me at Omar's. Be ready for me. I'm going after that truck.
Sallah: How?
Indiana: I don't know, I'm making this up as I go!

Re: Great Moments in Hanging a Lantern!

Here's a classic lantern with time travel paradoxes:

Basil: I suggest you don't worry about those things and just enjoy yourself.
[to camera]
Basil: That goes for you all, too.

Or this... I don't want to talk about time travel...

Re: Great Moments in Hanging a Lantern!

My favorite variant of time-travel lantern-hanging is from 11/22/63. Paraphrased:

"What if I went back in time and killed my own grandfather?" I asked.

He looked flabbergasted. "Why the fuck would you do that?"

Re: Great Moments in Hanging a Lantern!

- A top-secret government program involving instantaneous travel to other solar systems, by means of a device known as a "Stargate".
- Sounds like a good idea for a TV show. If you're into that sort of thing.

(From Stargate SG-1... obviously.)

Ripley: They cut the power.
Hudson: What do you mean, "*They* cut the power"? How could they cut the power, man? They're animals!

Re: Great Moments in Hanging a Lantern!

Man, SG-1 had so many great ones.

Awesome Bit Character: "I'm talking about... a twist! Something nobody's expecting!"
Jack O'Neill (walks into the room after being off the regular cast for a couple seasons)" "You mean something like this?"
Vala Mal Doran: "Wow, I don't think anybody will see that coming."
Daniel Jackson: "Nope, there'll be spoilers."
Samantha Carter: "Are you kidding? It'll be in the commercial." (It was.)

ST-TNG had this gem:

Our reality may be very much like theirs. All this might just be an elaborate simulation running inside a little device sitting on someone's table.

Re: Great Moments in Hanging a Lantern!

Jo Grant: "If we fail, why can't we just go back in time and try again?"
3rd Doctor: "The Blinovitch Limitation Effect."
Jo Grant: "What's that?"
3rd Doctor: "Well, you see..." [is interrupted]

SG-1:

Native: [pointing to Teal'c] He is Jaffa.
Col. O'Neill: No, but he plays one on TV.

I'm going to chalk it up to not having seen this episode since before I became brilliant, but this one just blew my mind.

Re: Great Moments in Hanging a Lantern!

SG-1 again:

O'Neill: Alright. If you're gonna go ahead with it, I want to make sure you get one thing right. It's "O'Neill," with two L's. There is another Colonel O'Neil with only one L and he has no sense of humor at all.

From "Ice Age"

*Diego, the sabertooth, returns after being critically injured*

Sid the Sloth: Diego! You're ok?

Diego: Nine lives, baby!

Ah, kid's movies smile

God loves you!

Awe man, Ice Age is still one of my favorite animated movies of all time, so great.

Lion King:

Timon:"Hey Pumbaa, not in front of the kids!"

Not technically Hanging A Lantern, but still some 4th wall breaking fun.

Black Adder the Third - "Duel and Duality"

Edmund: I want to be remembered when I'm dead. I want books written about me, I want songs sung about me. And then hundreds of years from now I want episodes from my life to be played out weekly at half past nine by some great heroic actor of the age.

Baldrick: Yeah. And I could be played by some tiny tit in a beard.
