Great episode guys. You talk about the remakes but missed the opportunity to compare another Swedish movie and the Hollywood remake, Let The Right One In. Teague makes an interesting point about remakes/covers. But I would ask why is it that the US audience cannot handle foreign films? How come this big market of 50 countries grouped together ignores 'foreign' movies more or less (read: more unless they are in english)?

And hell yeah! Finland is amazing country.
I think Tray had the order and the results of the three wars Finland fought in WW2 a little jumbled up. Tray says Finland fought the Russians and won, then the Nazis and won and then the Russians again and won.

They fought the Winter War against the Russians. It was a defensive war for the Finns and although they suffered much less casualties than the Russians they eventually asked for peace and lost a little land in the negotiations. It was hardly a win.

The second war was the Continuation War where they fought the Russians again. This time they kind of fought with Germany (touchy subject) but they did not advance much more into Russia than to take back the area they had lost in the Winter War.

The third war was the Lapland War where they fought the Germans driving them out of Finland. The war was pretty much forced upon them by the treaty with the Russians which stated they had to drive the Germans out of Finland by a certain date for the treaty to hold. How much of a war this was is debated since the Germans were essentially moving out of Finland. For the first two weeks of the Lapland War, the advance of Finland and the retreat of Germany was coordinated by both sides. The Russians got pissed when they found out and demanded real fighting. This is not to take anything away from Finland. The fact that Finland was able to go head to head with the Russians who possessed awesome military strength twice and survive is a true testament to the toughness of the Finnish fighters.

Probably because enough domestic films were produced there was no need. We also either got the low end, badly dubbed Italian or Japanese films, or the highbrow art movies. None of the middle of the spectrum stuff that would appeal to most people.

Totally agree about Fincher's making-of features. At the time, Fight Club really showed off what the DVD format is capable of, in respect to special bonus features. Now, every one of his films from Zodiac onwards has a feature-length HD documentary. Only the LOTR extras are more comprehensive. Ridley Scott's extras come close too.

Slackers include Cameron, Spielberg, Nolan, and Lucas that don't like doing commentaries nor having documentary cameras following them around.

Fun fact, that CPK is around the mountain from where Trey used to live, and the first time I came out to visit LA and hang with Trey and Chris Hanel and Amy, we swung through that CPK on our way to Comic-Con.

I have not been back since. Fucking avocados.
