Re: A Breaking Bad Conversation Thread w/ *SPOILERS* Up the Wazoo

See, I don't think Walt's given up on his family at all - he's just given up on trying to help them HIS way.  He can't even sneak money to his son because Flynn ain't having it.

But he hasn't given up on wanting to help his family - it's just that the only way he can do it is to allow the one thing his pride wouldn't let him do before.   Worse yet, now he's going to have to ask for it.  Which as far as that character goes, will be the bravest thing he's ever done.

The other thing he needs to do to protect his family is to burn Todd and Uncle Neck Tattoo to the ground.   But all he has to do for that is unleash Heisenberg one last time.   That's not brave, just necessary.

Yeah, it makes sense. I guess we'll see. Seven long days, man. smile

EDIT : who wouldn't finish a pizza with only one slice left, Teague? Really.

Re: A Breaking Bad Conversation Thread w/ *SPOILERS* Up the Wazoo

Well, here's what Peter Gould (who wrote/directed Granite State) had to say about this question:

“The way I see it is that Heisenberg is gone. He keeps trying to kind of evoke the ghost of Heisenberg, the thrill of feeling powerful, and it’s not there. It’s gone. It died when Hank died…It died when he saw baby Holly. And then in the end…what’s happening is he’s becoming something new. It’s not Walter White; it’s not Heisenberg. It’s something new.”

Now THAT'S interesting.

No, see this is the story of every single FIYH recording.

There's also the Todd/Lydia business that clearly needs some sort of resolution.   And good lord, they played the Stevia note yet again, suggesting that somehow or other Lydia's gonna get a steaming cup of Ricin.   But if that's not a red herring (it could be) then who, and how?

The person who could most easily give Lydia a fatal dose is Todd.  But he's also the least likely one to ever to do it.    And yet... Todd's right/wrong meter is so bizarrely calibrated that I could see circumstances arising where he might do it.

Finding out how they'll resolve this particular plot thread is what intrigues me the most, actually.

Are the ones that you don't finish the frozen gas station pizza that everyone takes 3 bites of one slice and the rest goes to the dog?

To bad ricen is so slow acting.  It would be awesome to see Todd try to do a Romeo and Juliet kiss the poison and play it off as that's the only book he's ever read.

And right after that, we have Gretchen who says "The sweet, kind, brilliant man that we once knew long ago, he's gone". Walt's reaction to that, that simple glance, tells me he accepts this idea. Walter White is dead. Only Heisenberg remains. And he wants revenge, because Heisenberg's only motivations are his greed and his ego.

Next week's episode's true title? Heisenberg goes on a rampage.

But Heisenberg was never a weapons-trained super-villain that could storm a secure compound Arnie style. He's a cancer-ridden school teacher. We saw Mike do it with that rival cartel, but Walt is not military trained. How many goons does Jack have? It would be a bit false to his character to suddenly turn Mr White into the T-800.

My prediction: Jesse is going to have to thin out their numbers with some explosion or fumes. Nazis getting gassed. There's your theme right there.

Yeah, obviously Walt's bringing some firepower to the party - but if he doesn't also kill 'em with chemistry I'll be very disappointed. smile

Re: A Breaking Bad Conversation Thread w/ *SPOILERS* Up the Wazoo

I'm curious how serious Vince Gilligan is taking the Scarface thing.  It's been pointed out that the gun Walt buys is better served as a defensive weapon.  Perhaps Walt will use his intellect to lure them into a setup of some kind and actually have his last stand as a defensive measure instead of storming the compound.

Given the swerves this show throws at you, perhaps the redneck storyline gets resolved by Jesse thinking a way out of his situation successfully for once, and the gun isn't intended for the rednecks at all.  I'm not saying that this is very likely but it is a possibility.

I sense a plot to destroy the aryans...

I think you guys are right that chemistry will carry the day. When Walt and Saul were temporary bunkmates, Walt was thinking hard about hiring a team. I doubt it'll be "Avengers, assemble!" but it shows that Walt realizes he'll need some kind of help.

Walt and Jesse both have a beef with the aryans. Whatever else happened between them, they might team up to stage Mr. White's last chemistry lesson.

In the past, Walt has been able to secure some unlikely allies under the "enemy of my enemy is my friend" principle. (Walt didn't kill Gus Fring — Walt and Hector Salamanca killed Gus Fring. Hector was literally the button man.)

I rather suspect Walt's surprise ally against the Aryans will be the DEA.

I actually jumped in my seat when Skyler walked in to check on Holly. I was genuinely surprised.

That was really well done, totally didn't see it coming.

Likewise...

Andrea getting whacked (even though I TOTALLY should've seen it coming). I might as well have been a girl in her jammies reacting to the Red Wedding. I actually had my hand on my forehead and needed to pause for a min to let it sink in. Aaron Paul, wow! I haven't seen emoting like that since...

I wish it was a 2-hr finale if only because I don't want there to be a single hour of this left.

If Gilly V manages to wrap this up in 53 minutes, in a way that feels right, he deserves a trinket or two.

Breaking Bad winning for drama and Colbert (finally!!!!!) winning for comedy is disturbingly on the money for a Hollywood pageant. I'm happy Anna Gunn won, after all the shit she's been getting (until recently) from plebs on the internet.

I'm not seeing where any help would be coming from.  Saul is the one who would hook him up in the past and he's gone.  The guy hiding him said if he heard that he'd gone to town, he'd never be back.  If not for his previous purchase of a gun he wouldn't even know where to get that.  The only connection he has left in the underground is the guys he's after and that gun guy and he obviously didn't give him that much info as has been established in the flash forward to open the season.

If this weren't the series finale, I could see a ragtag group of Walt, Badger and Skinny Pete assaulting the compound to rescue Jesse. THose guys are way too funny to fit into a series finale, in this context anyway.

How would that work?  If he's a nationwide manhunt subject, he wouldn't be allowed to be there and would have no use for the gun.  Unless he goes for another Hank interrupts Tuco gunfight scenario.

I categorically don't think that's gonna happen. It's clearly set up as Walt going in lone-wolf style and going out in a blaze of glory.

The Aryans killed two DEA agents and are now the cookers of the blue meth.  The DEA wants Walt, but it doesn't mean they've stopped being the DEA in the meantime.

I'm not saying Walt will walk into the DEA office and turn himself in or ask for their help. All he has to do is  make a phone call.    He could either give the Aryans' location and claim that's where he is, or tell the DEA that's where to find Hank's killers.   Either way, the feds are gonna show up loaded for bear.

To put it in Serenity terms, the DEA are the Reavers that Walt could lure to the party to make sure the job gets done.  smile

Re: A Breaking Bad Conversation Thread w/ *SPOILERS* Up the Wazoo

One thing this show specializes in is creating situations that make us say "Well I just don't see how X could happen, especially given Y and Z" and then showing us a surprising-but-somewhat-plausible way for X to happen. When it comes to the finale, it's hard to rule anything out.

BTW: Conan has the whole gang from the show on right now (Jonathan Banks is a solid talk show guest). Cranston said that the dvd/blu-ray boxed set will include a feature-length doc, part of which will show Paul and Cranston reading the final script together for the first time and reacting to it. Sounds kinda cool. Wait, I don't know... does that sound cool?

Re: A Breaking Bad Conversation Thread w/ *SPOILERS* Up the Wazoo

I have no idea what's going to happen in the final hour or how this could possibly be wrapped up in that amount of time. It feels like we're still introducing wrinkles to the story -- Skyler and the DEA is like a mid-season complication, you'd think.

The only expectation I have is that I'm going to be left wanting more, which is the way to go out I guess. The end of this episode could almost have been the finale (the music seemed to think it was) if not for the dangling promise of ricin and guns.

Yeah, it seems like the only way to end this thing in time is no more twists. As it is, it ever will be, and we just see what happened last.
