Re: Game of Thrones (TV Discussion | SPOILERS)

Well, it's just that I spent many months in Korea and something like 50% of the population's last name is either Kim or Lee.   So, just an educated guess.  smile

Fun Fact: The Korean version of the expression "like looking for a needle in a haystack" is "like going to Seoul and asking for Mr. Kim"

It's more that the fourth and fifth book are dull and repetitive. Every Brienne chapter in CROWS is the same. Every Tyrion chapter in DRAGONS is the same. Every time they eat a meal Martin stops the story to give us a detailed recipe. I'm planning to read the final two books if they're ever released, as I'm already well in for a penny, but I genuinely think the show is at the point of doing a better job of telling the story than the books. It boils it down to the interesting bits, still takes the time to let the characters be more than just cardboard cutouts, and when nothing interesting is happening in the books it does a good job of coming up with something in the proper spirit for both plot and character.

Well... I'll agree that the show is doing a wonderful job at adapting the story to its medium, but the books tell it just fine for me too. To each his own, of course. What you find dull in the books is most of the time making me experience this universe more thoroughly. I'll never get tired of Martin's food descriptions. As he said in his introduction to the cookbook A Feat of Ice and Fire: "It grouns the scenes, gives them texture, makes them vivid and visceral and memorable."

I will agree, however, that the Brienne chapters are by far the ones I find the most boring. I just don't care about this character and her goals anymore.

The first trailer for season 4 was released this week.

Besides being super stoked for Hafþór playing The Mountain, the martial arts nerd in me loves, loves the approach of the fighting style they have given to Oberyn Martell. April can not come fast enough for this tender soul.

Re: Game of Thrones (TV Discussion | SPOILERS)

Speaking of Icelandic connections, I was wandering around Þingvellir alone at 3am one night over the summer, and like a week later I saw a bunch of location photos where they were shooting in the same spot for some Riverlands thing. Would have been great to stumble upon.

Skál!
Relative to the picture the main shooting location was just a few meters away from where you are standing. The only negative is that you are drinking probably the worst of the Icelandic beers smile

Re: Game of Thrones (TV Discussion | SPOILERS)

It was the only beer at the Duty Free I could tell was from Iceland! Took some good brennivín home with me, though.

Would have gone drinking properly in Reykjavík but I had rented a car for the night and wanted to see as much as I could in the twelve hours I was there, so just had a beer on that deck before exploring the park a bit.

Was fucking amazing, need to go back for a proper trip sometime.

Re: Game of Thrones (TV Discussion | SPOILERS)

Hope you store the brennivín in the freezer. Served cold it's powerful stuff but warm it's not for everyone. Never ever take anyone up on eating the fermented shark with it. For me it's like candy but if you don't grow up with it... well it tastes like death.

Stumbled onto this... Haven't seen this level of costume love in a long time. Reminds me of the featurettes on the LOTR extended DVD's.

I feel like you think I should know who that is. I do not.

Either way that is a very large man.

Re: Game of Thrones (TV Discussion | SPOILERS)

The new Gregor Clegane presumably, AKA The Mountain.

I bought season 3 on bluray this week, which means I now have two seasons to catch up on.

Yes, the new new Gregor Clegane. Like Tray said "He is the Brute Squad"
Kind of disappointed how plain the sword is compared to the intricate design in the clothes. Hope this is not a hero sword.

I was referring to the actor, but I didn't know that either.

Re: Game of Thrones (TV Discussion | SPOILERS)

Digging this thread out in preparation for the new season, and also to shamelessly pimp the podcast that my friend and I just started. Just posted our first episode, talking about the first three seasons and what we expect going forward.

If you're looking for gimmicky hooks, I've read all the books and he hasn't read any of them, which means I found myself tiptoeing quite a bit in this episode. NO future spoilers in here, non-readers. I promise.

MAJOR FUTURE SPOILER, BOOK READERS ONLY Show
At one point he mentions that Catelyn's death was spoiled for him after someone mentioned "Zombie Cat," not knowing that she literally comes back as a zombie later on. I chuckled nervously.

Re: Game of Thrones (TV Discussion | SPOILERS)

I don't know if they spent half of the VFX budget for the dragons in this episode alone, but dayum.

Dragons? Sure, they looked good, but Arya's pretty much where it's at now.

Also Jon Snow. His few minutes on screen show how much he's changed.

Re: Game of Thrones (TV Discussion | SPOILERS)

No, you misunderstand. It's an ancient Lannister artifact, thought lost for ages after King Tommen II took it on his quest to Valyria and never returned. Trust me, it's canon.
