Re: Star Trek Into Darkness

Interestingly enough, while objectively its worse, given the option I'd actually re-watch Into Darkness before Trek 09. Despite all the things that make it a bad movie, I think its pretty watchable on an action movie level, to where if it was on cable, I'd probably watch it, whereas Trek 09 is more competent but pretty dull and forgettable to me (that one has 1-2 good set-pieces, this one has like 4-5).

Also, to say something positive for a change, I think Quinto absolutely nails Spock this time out, all his dialogue and deliveries are great in this one.

Re: Star Trek Into Darkness

I'm not so sure I'd consider it objectively worse (especially since I prefer it). And whilst most of the criticism I've heard/read is justified, the Trek 09 has just as long a list of similar flaws. It's just done better more confidently and competently this time around, helped enormously by the fact that it's not a poorly done 'origin' story where the original crew arrive on the Enterprise by various strokes of happenstance as if ordained by destiny (wink wink).

On another note, I did not like the Starfleet uniform hats.

Re: Star Trek Into Darkness

I'm not sure how I feel on this one yet. Part of me is is with DocSub, it was a fun movie. I had more fun watching Star Trek than I did watching Iron Man 3 (which I wouldn't call an ok movie, but I would call a "fun" movie). The other part of me is seeing all the cheap tricks a gimmickes. I need to see it again to see if they completely ruin the movie for me.

  Show
I think this movie needs to cut act III. I like the act one "we have to hunt down a terrorist" movie. I like Peter Weller as the real bad guy the terrorist was trying to stop. But I don't think I like how they treated Kahn. I was ok with "now he's going to help the good guys," because we the audience know who he is (left over emotions from Star Trek II) but the characters don't. That was good tension. To me the movie falls apart when they go, "yup, he's the bad guy too!"
I would love the shit out of this movie if it was just acts 1 & 2 with a 10 minuite wrap up, and Kirk and Kahn kept to thier deal.  ( It always bothers me when two characters make a deal and then both break it,...  I mean really where are all the honest people in the world.  wink )

I still think JJ will do Star Wars ok. I'm just really glad it has different writters.

I feel this is something we've seen a lot over the last couple of years.

Bullet, literally none of the things you mentioned bothered me in the slightest.

Watched it and I guess it was okay-ish. I might have been more disappointed if it hadn't been exactly what I was expecting to be.

I very much prefer the previous one and still think Star Trek belongs on TV, but if this is what I get, this will have to do.

Now, in this article, Matt Singer outlines a genuine problem with the film and Abrams' whole style of storytelling. I still enjoyed the movie a great deal, but the villain probably should've just been John Harrison.

Re: Star Trek Into Darkness

I enjoyed it fine as a movie, completely separated from what makes Satr Trek worthy of its fandom.  That said, I lament the wasted opportunities they could have told.  It's my similar gripe with the last three bond films.  The end of Skyfall basically establishes, "OK, THIS is the Bond you've been waiting for."  It just took three movies to get there.  By the end of ST:ID, we've finally moved the characters into a place were they had grown enough to be worthy of the legacy.  I thought we had done that at the end of the last movie.  So while it was fine as a movie, I just am getting a bit tired of waiting or them to be these characters.

Wait, I know this one... is it that Captain Kirk's hair is parted on the wrong side?

Re: Star Trek Into Darkness

A lot of people guess that, but actually - Sulu's clearly holding daisies and it was established in The Corbomite Maneuver that's he's allergic.

You're all wrong, it is the fact that there isn't really a 'What's Wrong With This Picture?' sign on the Enterprise wall.

Now that's just racist. Neither is Sulu.

Re: Star Trek Into Darkness

will be seeing this today in 2D.  IF Abrams didn't want it shot in 3D, it wasn't intended for 3D.  Also, after feeling "meh" about Iron Man 3, I don't have very high hopes for movies this summer.

Saw it today.  I enjoyed it.  Sure it has a great deal of story that doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but it was fun.  I'd say more fun than Iron Man 3 was.  I'll be seeing this one again. smile

Ann Coulter has passed the point where you can write satire about her. It just sounds too realistic now.

Re: Star Trek Into Darkness

Welp, looks like ST:ID will fall well short of matching the opening weekend of the first one.  Not a bomb, but not exactly blockbuster-y either.  But it's making more than the first one in the rest of the world, so ultimately it shouldn't cause anyone to lose their job.

Data here (but don't click if you're still staying spoiler-free)  http://www.deadline.com/2013/05/star-tr … -and-imax/

Next weekend's results will really tell the tale, but even so, the "what went wrong?" post-mortems are already underway.  Overall this one's looking like a bit of a damp squib - it'll do okay in the end but it's not breaking any records or garnering a lot of raves.  If you actually look at the text of those "Fresh" Rotten Tomatoes reviews, they're mostly pretty lukewarm.

Still haven't seen it myself, btw.  Might later today.
