Re: Suggest a movie!

I'm not sure about "unsuccessful." I looked up the numbers, and IMDB said it made a modest profit ($35M gross on $20M budget), not counting rentals and sales and whatnots. So commercially, it seems like it was at least not a fiasco.

And artistically … there's nothing about this movie that doesn't creep me the fuck out. Just watching the very beginning and seeing the matte paintings of the stars — they're surprisingly distinctive — creeped me the fuck out.

Also? The science isn't entirely awful. It's not super-hard-sci-fi, but it's not totally stupid either. Which for a Disney movie from 1979 is saying something.

They are awful movies but some of them have real 'what the fuck?' value and have to be seen to be believed. With Postal, Boll manages to be both awful AND offensive, so you sort of have to admire him for that. Or not.

And he did get Kristanna Loken to get her boobs out in BloodRayne.......

Re: Suggest a movie!

When it looked like Disney was going to abandon animation (every movie in the 70's had a chance to be the last animated feature) the studio did take some out there chances on live action films. Black Hole, Tron, Dragonslayer... I honestly think if one had really hit it big we might have seen Disney pour their talent into out doing ILM, maybe hooking up with Henson to really do some far out stuff.

It was a reverse takeover, similar to what happened with Apple. First Apple buys NEXT and puts Jobs in charge and changes the Mac OS into NEXT, then Disney buys Pixar and puts Lassiter and all the Pixar people in charge of the animation. Everyone wins.

Next step? Disney buys Adobe with $18 billion Steve Jobs finds in the cushions of his enormous couch.

I'd like to see Apple and Google buy Adobe and then publicly dismember it.

So did Roger Corman movies.

Re: Suggest a movie!

Hello!

I adore what you guys doing. smile

I'd love to hear your commentaries for:

- The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: a failure or a success? Is a film version of one of the best SF humor novels a good movie on its own?
- Daredevil: hey, it was a good movie! Despite of starring Jennifer Garner, obviously;
- Truman Show: fascinating drama about life in the eye of millions;
- The Butterfly Effect: when Ashton Kutcher travels in time, you know it's gonna be... pretty good, actually;
- K-Pax: Kevin Spacey is an alien! Or is he?
- Eight Legged Freaks: Roland Emmerich's only enjoyable movie?
- something of Richard Kelly;
- Children of Men.

Re: Suggest a movie!

A series of good suggestions. I'm looking forward to doing K-Pax and Children of Men in particular.

Welcome to the forums, too! Happy to be adorable.

I could get behind the "Hitch Hiker's Guide." I know what my opinion was of that flick — and it surprised me — but I'm curious about y'all's.

I love Children of Men dearly and will fight anyone who disparages it. Hitchhiker's would be a good one. And I'd love to do Truman Show. I nominate we put those on our Near Future To Do List.

Re: Suggest a movie!

Children of Men is an amazing movie with much to chew on.  Hitchhikers would be good too, as would Truman.

But as long as we're talking Peter Weir, Trey and I are both huge fans of Master and Commander and would love a crack at that.

Oh yes please. I LOVE Master and Commander. Great, great film.

Hmm. Maybe I'll pop that one in tonight, since netflix won't Constantine me until tomorrow.

I wasn't too into M&C when I saw it, I recall getting frustrated with it. Don't remember why.

Re: Suggest a movie!

I think it's one of those movies you're either going to like or dislike before you ever see it. I have an unhealthy fascination with the Age of Sail, and the Hornblower books are some of my favorites, but I have to confess that I broke upon the Aubrey/Maturin books like water on rock. They were just too dense for me. So the movie makes me happy, happy.

Re: Suggest a movie!

Didn't know anything about it before I saw it, so it's not quite that. I like the sea, I like ships, I like Russel Crowe (and isn't Paul Bettany in it?). Like I said, don't remember what my thing was, but it wasn't the setting.

I think it was that I felt like nothing happened in the movie.

Re: Suggest a movie!

It took me a legitimate four or five tries to get through Master and Commander.  I enjoyed everything I saw every time, as I'm a bit of an enthusiast for that period of history, but it just moved too slowly for me to be able to sit down and invest a chunk of my time into it.  When I finally did, yes, great movie, but man does it drag when you really want to see more naval battling.

When.

Re: Suggest a movie!

You know, it's weird. My mental impression of that movie is of a non-stop, adrenaline-fueled thrill ride. But now that I think of it, I guess you guys are right. It is kinda slow. Or maybe not slow so much as … paced.

Re: Suggest a movie!

M&C: My dad is a huge Age of Sail geek, so he was always watching Hornblower and M&C etc. So I caught a couple mins here and there, thought it looked pretty cool. But I need to actually watch it one day.

As for Children of Men, I think I got about halfway through it, can't remember why I stopped.

As far as Hitchhikers Guide goes. If you are talking about the Sam Rockwell one then please for the love of all things good and just, kill me first.
That movie was a massive rapeage of everything Hitchhikers was and should be.

Re: Suggest a movie!

If that movie raped what Hitchhiker's should be, that's a shame, because I loved that movie with zero prior exposure to anything Douglas Adams, and it definitely interested me in reading his stuff and catching the old TV series.  I haven't yet, but man that movie rocked my balls off.

When.

Re: Suggest a movie!

Well let me put it this way, the movie basically tried to take the best parts of most of the books smash them together and tried to use the plot of the first book...sort of.

It was a steaming pile of shit.

Re: Suggest a movie!

This might have came up, maybe in your minds or from the forums but, commentaries for the Indiana Jones trilogy. And if you're really up to it, that other Indiana Jones movie.

Re: Suggest a movie!

Yeah, the Hitchhiker's movie was pretty awful.

Kyle, you know handful of the bits where the movie would show an entry from the Guide and it was weird and quirky and just the way things were phrased and constructed were hysterical? The books are like that the entire time.
