Re: Suggest a movie!

Just seen Strange Days again for the second time in what feels like 10 years. I remember Trey liking this one so maybe it has a good chance of getting a commentary once all the Halloween stuff is over.

Just watched it again myself a couple months back; still very good, and rather prescient actually.  There's a line near the beginning about how gas is over $3 / gallon and the economy sucks, what is there to celebrate; sounds like a good New Year's movie actually.

Star Trek 3 - The Search for Spock. I've always felt it needed more attention. It's a good flick.

Re: Suggest a movie!

you guys should think about doing The Room.  A movie so bad, it's just that bad.  I'm sure you'll have plenty to say about that one.

Re: Suggest a movie!

The Room is one of those films that just leaves you opened mouthed, it really is that awful. The characters are all cunts, there is not a single likeable one among them therefor there is nobody to root for. You're supposed to care for the main guy but he is so vile it really is difficult to give a shit. On the plus side though, it is actually (unintentionally, mind) funny and the dialogue and the delivery of it is so jaw-droppingly terrible it verges on genius big_smile

Welcome to the forum, Bashir!

As for The Room... let's just say we're aware of it.

It would be interesting to see if Tommy Wisuea throws his toys out his pram at your guys like he did with Doug over at That Guy With The Glasses. He told him to get rid of his review even though Doug actually recommended the film (although maybe for the wrong reasons). Obviously, he showed clips of the film and you dudes wouldn't, but you never know.

Re: Suggest a movie!

Don't do The Room!  I was just messing with you guys.  I personally don't think it deserves the attention of Down in Front.  It's just bad, and to think that the guy raised 6 million to make it!  That is just mind boggling to me!

Re: Suggest a movie!

It's come up before.

We avoid comedies on the show because there's often not much to say other than to explain why the jokes are funny. IMO, it's essentially the same thing with THE ROOM. Talking about why a given scene, line, or performance is bad is pretty much just explaining the joke.

Re: Suggest a movie!

Sure, but in the case of The Room, I don't think it was meant as a joke.  Several cast members have said that it was supposed to be a drama.  I think it's more a failed drama that just happens to be funny.

Re: Suggest a movie!

Yeah, the Room is not supposed to be a comedy it just turned out that way. It's mostly the delivery of the lines by the star/writer/director/producer with his accent that isn't specific to anywhere on the planet that makes it funny big_smile

It would be weird to hear you guys do a commentary on it but I think you all should at least watch it.....

Yes, it's obviously unintentional. There's nothing actually funny about the film if taken at face value, it's the meta level of its abject, spectacular failure to be what it's trying to be that makes it funny. The attempt to claim it was always meant to be a "dark comedy" is clearly nonsense.

But the fact remains: we'd primarily be explaining why something is funny. Whether the filmmaker did it intentionally or not (not) is besides the point -- explaining a joke is just not very good podcast.

Commenting on The Room would be like beating up a battered wife.

That you don't even know.
